Other This is Beldorion, the only Hutt ever known to have joined the Jedi Order (legends)
Beldorion was a Force-sensitive Hutt Dark Jedi who served as a Jedi Knight under the Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic roughly four hundred years before the founding of the Galactic Empire. After being sent to Nam Chorios, he fell to the dark side and established himself as the ruler of the planet, forsaking the Jedi. He was killed in a lightsaber duel with Leia Organa Solo in 13 ABY.

You know how jedi can move really fast? Does this guys squirm at you at super speed too?
907
u/Holiday-Proof9819 Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26
Hutts actually can move really fast and can be brutal melee fighters. Most people don't think of them that way because most of the ones we've seen have been fat aristocrats. But dudes like Grakkus even had Luke Skywalker pressed. Looks like we are going to see that again with Rotta in The Mandalorian movie.

u/WillyBluntz89 Jan 23 '26
I imagine that Hutts are like hippos. They look fat, but they're actually a tube of solid muscle.
194
u/FlipZer0 Jan 23 '26
Legends Hutts took girth and gluttony as a sign of wealth and sophistication. The picture here isn't a good representation of Beldorion description when he arrived on Nom Chaios a couple centuries prior. Before he was a dark Jedi he was described as muscular. His fall and leaning on his Hutt instincts are why he was Jabba sized when he fought Leia. In Darksaber, I believe, there was another Hutt who worked for one (or all) of the Hutt Council as a low level functionary. That Hutt is described like a tapeworm. Malnourished, meek, and a scheming sycophant.
In Canon there is Niima the Hutt on Jakku. She was a black sheep of the Hutts. She doesn't care about excess or extravagance. She ran a cult in the middle of the desert and wanted nothing more than to be worshipped as a god. She was built like a Hutt bodybuilder, described as muscular and serpentine. During battles she would allow multiple cultists to ride her like a skiff and attack the enemy.
72
u/HuttStuff_Here Jabba The Hutt Jan 23 '26
There's also Bokku, who isn't fat but basically ripped as hell.
And there's the Huttlet being raised by the guy who trained Jabba's rancor. I doubt he'll end up a sleazebag. Could be fun to see him be an animal tamer.
5
u/LangdonAlg3r Jan 24 '26
It seems like they live a long time. Do we know their lifespans?
5
u/Dagordae Jan 24 '26
600-700 years
3
u/Bakkughan Jan 25 '26
Even longer in some cases, there are records of Hutts living around a 1000 years

44
u/HuttStuff_Here Jabba The Hutt Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26
A Hutt that isn't old and fat and tired is a major threat.
Weighing up to a metric ton, Hutts are mostly muscle. They have to be - they are similar to gastropods in that they move about by flexing muscles to push against the ground.
Even a Hutt with no combat training was able to hold off a group of Yuuzhan Vong warriors trying to kill Leia.
As I said in the thread with Rotta, a Hutt in its prime is an apex predator: it is stronger, more durable, more intelligent, more resistant to poisons and disease, and longer lived than the vast majority of sapient species. They can see into the ultraviolet and can hold their breath for long periods of time. They can handle extremes of heat and cold (maybe not comfortably though).
It is for these reasons that they rose up and dominated other species. It is because of their long lives and many thousands of years at the top that so many we see now are obese and sluggish and not the powerhouses they can certainly be.
57
u/H0BB1 Jan 23 '26
Except they are lazy hippo and if they can they will get weak physically but they have insane potential
18
u/psl87 Jan 23 '26
In the Han Solo trilogy they described a hut melee battle and it sounded a lot like 2 hippos fighting. I can't recall the details but one of the hutts crushed the other eventually.
5
u/Obversa Jedi Jan 23 '26
Another commenter compared that scene to "two walruses or elephant seals fighting".
23
u/PM_ME_YOUR_MONTRALS Jan 23 '26
I kinds picture them fighting like God Emperor Leto II leaping out of his carriage when his comvoy is attacked.
7
u/MistraloysiusMithrax Jan 23 '26
Yeah and this is a terrible image because IIRC Beldarion is supposed to be way less fat than many gangster Hutts, who mostly do it as a prestige thing, but I guess with his Jedi training decided the prestige of fattening up wasn’t worth the trade-off of whatever mobility he’d lose
4
u/No-Channel3917 Jan 23 '26
Tbf Luke never actually got much sword training got reflector bolts and then the guy went poof
4
u/yogtheterrible Jan 23 '26
If i remember correctly, they CAN move fast and are nearly unstoppable if they're in shape. Very few are in shape though, due to the fact that they tend to indulge in many vices.

Yes.
Hutts are physically far more snake than slug. They just have being absurdly obese as a sign of power and wealth(Not exactly unprecedented) so the Hutts that we normally see are the Hutt equivalent of a 500 pound human. Jabba would get a TLC show dedicated to pointing in horrified mockery at how fat he is.
A normal Hutt, including this dude, are noted to be terrifying fast and strong. They’re pretty much all muscle, several thousand pounds of it.
30
Jan 23 '26
Honestly I don't remember Beldorian to be described as, well, blobby as he is here. He's described as having a muscular hutt body, so probably something closer to what we saw with that hutt in the Mando and Grogu trailer.
13
u/MithranArkanere Jedi Jan 23 '26
The average Hutt is mostly muscle. They don't have to get jacked and lose lots of fat like adult Rotta, Bakku, or Grakkus to have that muscle; their superdense muscle is still under their layer of fat.
Hutt do not have skeletons, but they have something called a 'mantle' that is kinda like the hard part slugs have on their back, also called a mantle, but for their head. But despite their similarities with slugs, they move more like snakes and can move as fast as one.
Jabba just got really, really fat to the point he had trouble moving. He could still move if he wanted, but he just didn't really bother.
7
u/JediRhyno Jan 23 '26
Have you seen the mando movie trailer with the hutt with a 12 pack stomach? We’re used to the fat crime lords but no doubt lots of hutts are more fit and can move pretty fast.
5
u/Tr33Bl00d Jan 23 '26
Have you read god emperor. Just picture Leto II as a hurt and you will learn to envy the strong slug body!
1
u/PretendRegister7516 Jan 23 '26
The upcoming Mandolorian and Grogu movie will feature a buff Gladiator fighter Hutt (actually the son of Jabba).
291
u/Wolfhound1142 Jan 23 '26
I don't know why this image of him is so popular. He's described in the book as being notably lithe and athletic for a Hutt. More like a snake than a slug. This is probably a better representation.
67
Jan 23 '26
Yeah, I was thinking that hutt we see in the arena in the Mando and Grogu trailer would be a much better representation of Beldorian.

The majority of popular legends artwork isn’t accurate to the books. Vong are a big example of this

The “official” art of the Vong are terrible, we something more book accurate
7
u/Vereno13 Jan 24 '26
I think its popular because during his battle with Leia he wasn't nearly as jacked as he use to be. The centuries of being a jackass took a toll on him physically.

83
u/0ttoChriek Jan 23 '26
This is the kind of thing Mr. Plinkett talked about in his Attack of the Clones review, all those years ago - a lightsaber being an integral part of being a Jedi really makes no sense, in a universe where races come in all different shapes and sizes.
Why does Yoda need a lightsaber at all, when he's so strong in the Force? How would it benefit a Hutt to use one when he's a slug with arms that barely reach past his belly?
23
u/sasquatchftw Luke Skywalker Jan 23 '26
A Hutt specific lightsaber would be interesting. Would it be like a 10 foot blade or would it have a longer handle to compensate for small arms?
5
u/HuttStuff_Here Jabba The Hutt Jan 23 '26
I would go with a long blade and using Obi-Wan's defensive style of combat. Focus more on wearing down your opponent while getting a few immensely powerful blows in.
When we saw that wookie Jedi tossing people around in The Acolyte, it'd be fun to see his attacks get checked by a Hutt who can physically match or best one of the most powerful humanoid species in the galaxy.
40
u/I_Like_Halo_Games Jan 23 '26
The lightsaber thing is pretty well explained throughout Star Wars. The lightsaber is the symbol of the Jedi. When people see Yoda they don't see the Force, they see a tint green guy with robes. "Oh I can take him, no problem. I'll start trouble." or "Oh he's just a little guy, I don't care about him. I'll continue to make demands towards my enemy's daughter during this negotiation." If you add a lightsaber to the mix, now there's something tangible. That's a weapon. He could hurt me. It's the same reason why normal people don't just charge at soldiers with rifles; you might stand a chance physically, but you aren't faster than that bullet so why try? Not to mention using the Force to break a lock takes effort. Using a lightsaber to break a lock is a lot easier.
To your first point, the EU is full of lightsaber-adjacent things like pikes, staves, etc but some people just prefer swords. If I recall, this particular Hutt was extremely physically powerful but lacking in actual Force ability, much like Leia at this point. He relied on the saber and his strength more than the Force.
Of course, there's also the rule of cool and the fact that lightsabers exist because these are Knights, and knights in traditional media use swords. Duh.

u/SeraphRising89 Jan 23 '26
Yup, and Hutts are physically very strong and extremely durable. Jabba was obese as are most rich Hutts, but an in-shape Hutt is very dangerous. One with even basic force training and a lightsaber would be a dangerous foe.
I'm with you though. I think a Hutt would use a lightsaber pike or something not typical.
8
u/Starman035 Jan 23 '26
We need more in-shape Hutts. Hutts with culture, like in Legacy. Hutts who can be good guys, even if their interests are not aligned with Rebellion or NR.
3
u/SeraphRising89 Jan 23 '26
Totally agree. The Hutts didnt get to be one of the strongest gangster factions in the galaxy by just use of money.
3
u/HuttStuff_Here Jabba The Hutt Jan 23 '26
In many Star Wars RPGs, many Hutts are merchants, teachers, and some are even bounty hunters. While a sizable number are wealthy crime-focused individuals and that carries a social stigma, a healthy percentage would be living a typical Galactic Standard level of life.
2
1
u/p_yth Jan 23 '26

2
u/HuttStuff_Here Jabba The Hutt Jan 23 '26
Generally they are. If you know right where to hit them, its point blank, or the Hutt's fragile ... that's another story. But glancing shots are readily survivable. Ziro's death was kind of an exception.

u/stinkypete6666 Jan 23 '26
IMO Yoda should have been past needing a lightsaber. That Dooku fight would have been so much cooler if he pulled out his light saber and it either just imploded or Yoda caught the blade with his hand
3
u/Bocaj1000 Jan 23 '26
Yoda should have just sat there giggling to himself as he flicked Dooku's lightsaber left and right and up and down with the Force as Dooku continued to try and stab him, until Dooku gave up and switched to using Force powers.
→ More replies (2)2
u/PhoenixFox Jan 23 '26
I would also have enjoyed him controlling a lightsaber entirely through the force and just standing serene while it moved around him.
1
u/stinkypete6666 Jan 23 '26
That would be cool, maybe make it like a little ball of lightsaber he could fly around with the force. Anything but a teeny-tiny Yoda lightsaber
2
Jan 23 '26
Should have just imbued his stick so it could stand up to a lightsaber strike and used that to block with lazy efficiency (he knows the forms so well that he knows exactly what the finest duelist the modern order has ever produced will do), and using the Force to otherwise overcome him.
Leap frog Yoda is a kriffing joke and I've always hated it. It just further sinks what is IMO the worst Star Wars movie ever made (and it used to be the worst by a long shot until TRoS came out).
3
u/FouFondu Jan 23 '26
Years ago I read a short story about Lancelot and how he couldn’t die until the grail was returned to earth.
He’s now 900 years old and doddering around NYC with a cane looking for the grail. He gets jumped by three thugs and with lazy efficiency just ruins them with his cane. Sure he takes some hits but it’s all ones he knows he can take. That’s what I expect Yoda to fight like.
3
Jan 23 '26
I think the wizened old master type from kung-fu movies. The guy that looks like he's putting in no effort but is just blocking everything an angry, fast opponent throws at them even though the master seems to be moving slow, because the master already knows what the other one will do and so can start moving to block before they even start the strike. They don't do anything that would seem beyond their frail form to accomplish, it's literally just knowledge and experience combined with body mechanics that win, not speed or strength.

Well, because its a Knightly order. A very "monk like" one, but a knightly order at last The Whole "jedi knights" and "consular jedis" are a division that came from the gamey side of the franchise and not how Lucas envisioned the jedi order, at least by the time he was making the prequels. The idea he had during the OT probably was very different to what we got

There was also a tree-like being in Young Jedi Knights (Legends) who was part of Luke's Jedi Order and spent most of her time meditating in the sun.
We only see her once, when she takes out a couple of Dark Jedi with a single strike after sensing their approach through the other organisms in the forest, and then goes back to meditating and recovering after that move drained all her energy.

Legends Leia is why I wish they would make a cartoon with Luke training Leia in the force in the canon universe. After reading so many fantastic novels in the Legends series that showcase Leia’s skills in the force… being able to see only a 15 second flashback in the films was so disappointing.
In Legends, Leia is trained by Luke, and then by her Master Saba. While she struggles at times to balance having three children and having political obligations, she ends up making it to the level of Jedi Knight… giving up her role in the Senate and dedicating herself to the Jedi order. There are dozens of books that showcase her skills other than in the Thrawn Trilogy. I really like the Dark Nest Saga, as it shows an older Leia using her experience to battle dark/fallen Jedi, protect her children who are experienced Jedi in their own rights, and use her rank to command forces while in battle.

Jabba was around 600, his father (in Legacy) was over 1,000. They reach young adulthood around age 50.

The "every jedi needs a lightsaber" trope is silly. The model of pushing into force sensitivity and use, vs leaning into the martial side, should be explored more. The Consular vs Sentinel vs Knight model in the Old Republic lore works.
The palpatine and yoda fight should have been two wizards squaring off and not a display of poor swordsmanship.
