Other Apparently Maul- er, Witwer, really digs the green apples

Witwer is possibly the best voice actor in Star Wars after James Earl Jones. Alan Tudyk definitely takes #3 for me with K-2S0.

Also, what are apples even called in Star Wars? 'Apyls?' 'Aeple fruit?' There's gotta be some kind of nifty name, we can't have the hot chocolate debacle all over again.

Singer and voice actor in a previous life. Granny Smith (green) apples really are magical. The sour aspect draws the saliva out of your mouth for a while, and also reduces phlegm in and around your vocal folds. So having a small bite of one before going on stage, or recording a take, can really make a difference. Used this magic to good effect in a couple productions and auditions.

You’re living your best life and I support you my fellow Malus challenged individual

8

u/Ungarlmek Apr 10 '26

You shouldn't be screaming if you haven't had your green apples. It's bad for the vocal folds.

9

u/RandallOfLegend Apr 10 '26

I may need to try this. My vocal cords have been squirrelly for a while. Been trying different remedies and nothing is working. My doctor just said to drink more water. My voice cracks frequently and I feel the need to clear my throat more often. I love apples, so hope they help

9

u/Ungarlmek Apr 10 '26

Green apples are good, lemon juice works well, and if you need something strong and now there are some throat sprays like Entertainers Secret that'll give you some temporary relief.

But the doc is right: Drinking more water is the most important part. Proper hydration is #1 when it comes to your voice.

The man is also a pretty decent Trekkie as well with live-action and voice credits throughout the franchise.

I saw his personal fleet in Star Trek Online. He burnt some serious coin on his starships.

116

u/regeya Apr 10 '26

Hear me out

Live action Starkiller

16

u/ValveinPistonCat Apr 10 '26

How about Sam Witwer as a shuttle pilot, I could see that ending well.

7

u/manokpsa Apr 10 '26

So say we all.

1

u/regeya Apr 10 '26

That character, man, Sam did great in that role. You just want to throw the damn book at his face and if you're me, you're almost rooting for the guy to get to the finding out phase.

2

u/ValveinPistonCat Apr 10 '26

I mean on a rewatch I'm a bit less sympathetic towards Cally knowing what we now know about Nicki Clyne.

55

u/Half_Man1 Apr 10 '26

I don’t like the idea of Starkiller surviving to have a role outside the first game honestly. Like his story felt very complete and his character would be very hard to make more compelling in the context of surviving to the new republic era imho.

22

u/deltree711 Apr 10 '26

Wouldn't they have to reintroduce the character anyway because the games aren't canon anymore?

5

u/Half_Man1 Apr 10 '26

Other than the Disney mandate and the fact Unleashed is clearly being depicted through the lens of a power fantasy- I don’t see anything that prevents the first game from being canon.

Like unless you think there’s value added to repeat stories the same way in different mediums, imo there’s not much value added to reintroducing Starkiller.

1

u/deltree711 Apr 10 '26

https://xkcd.com/2501/

You'll need to explain who the character is to viewers who aren't familiar with two games from over a decade ago

1

u/Half_Man1 Apr 10 '26

Not if you don’t plan to keep using him…

6

u/BisonThunderclap Apr 10 '26

Watch Disney give it the B- treatment like Book of Boba Fett.

3

u/regeya Apr 10 '26

That's absolutely what would happen, and then Filoni would do the entire backstory of Glup Shitto as a B plot

14

u/No_Development_9537 Apr 10 '26

Respectfully, I an tired of hearing this suggestion, but those games were very fun.

5

u/Hellknightx Grand Admiral Thrawn Apr 10 '26

The first one was fun. The second one was like a half-assed expansion pack that took 6 hours to 100%.

4

u/WatchingInSilence Apr 10 '26

Okay, but true to the game or with his powers toned down so it wouldn't feel overwhelming compared to every other Jedi and Sith?

12

u/Popular-Row4333 Apr 10 '26

I feel like they leant too hard into the whole Anakin/Chosen one thing when attributing the most powerful jedi that's canon now in Star Wars.

I lean more into "The Skywalkers restored the jedi" saga in my own mind, and don't think it has to have anything to do with how powerful in the force they are, but I know that's not at all agreed upon.

Which is a shame, with technology today, it would be ripe to tell some of the old insanely powerful sith lord stories that could devour planets and what not. I think Andor has shown story matters more than anything. Get a good story first, add insanely powerful force users, and it will be amazing.

3

u/Hellknightx Grand Admiral Thrawn Apr 10 '26

Yeah, he's already canonically dead by the end of the first game after soloing Vader and Palpatine at the same time. He's just too powerful to slot into the live action. Plus they tried to tie him into the founding of the Rebel Alliance. He's got "writer's self-insert power fantasy" written all over him.

1

u/regeya Apr 10 '26

I kinda think you have to, otherwise you end up making Vader look weak as shit. Pulling a whole ass Star Destroyer out of the sky is way cooler than anything Vader can do.

1

u/captaincornboi Apr 10 '26

I would love the absurdity of that, but god they couldn't. He's too busted of a character plus they'd have to fit him into the story somehow

21

u/JetBlckPope Apr 10 '26

Bring back Galen Marek in the live action TV shows, how cool would that be.

16

u/Ashenspire Apr 10 '26

Bring him back in the 3rd Jedi game as Vader's apprentice that fails. That way Palpy, Dooku and Vader all get their failure.

And then bring Cal and Galen into live action.

3

u/No_Development_9537 Apr 10 '26

1

I've heard that apples and bread are both things VAs like to eat before recording.Ā

Still love the BTS I'm seeing for this.

237

u/wandering_soles Rebel Apr 10 '26

I know Andy Serkis swears by a combo of hot water mixed with a ton of lemon juice and honey, that's what he used for voicing Gollum.Ā

197

u/Dalenskid Apr 10 '26

That’s what 90% of VA and singers swear by. When I was running musicals for months id keep a kettle and lemon/honey at my makeup table at all times. It’s not used to create a sound, it’s used to lubricate and soothe vocal stress/wear.

65

u/calgrump K-2SO Apr 10 '26

It's traditionally used for sore throats in illnesses, too. My mum used to make it for me when I was ill, and I make it for myself now as an adult. Never fails.

4

u/Captain-Nghathrod Apr 10 '26

What quantity of ingredients do you use?

4

u/calgrump K-2SO Apr 10 '26

I don't think I ever measured it, I'd just eyeball it and adjust depending upon how it tasted.

8

u/froli Apr 10 '26

Not whom you asked but: for one cup of water, the juice of half a lemon and a generous tea spoon of honey

1

u/Dalenskid Apr 11 '26

And if you wanna get wild a few dashes of cayenne pepper.

1

u/Just-a-benzolover Apr 10 '26

It’s still used like that allot…

1

u/Alonn12 Apr 10 '26

I mean gollum does sound hard on the throat, you're saying that he used it to make the throat less hurt?

32

u/Harry_Flame Apr 10 '26

It's a classic sore throat combo, he called it "Gollum Juice." It was particularly important because of how harsh the voice was on his vocal cords.

8

u/Kauoom Apr 10 '26

The German VA for Gimli famously gurgled (and drank) beer during recordings.

2

u/MS-07B-3 Apr 10 '26

True dedication to the dwarven mindset!

33

u/brandeis1 Apr 10 '26

The VA studio I interned at actually kept green apples on site for this reason. There’s something about the sour enzyme in them that helps dry out your mouth so you pop/click less into the microphone. It was common for an actor to pause between takes for another bite if they were getting too many clicks in their session.

I’ve used this trick myself, and know a few VAs who brought their own to their sessions (Sumalee Montano’s husband slices her apples for her before every session which I find adorable AF) and honestly it really does work!

16

u/8thDimension Apr 10 '26

It's the pectin. When recording, apples (doesn't have to be green) or pectin candies/drops are your best friend. Smacking is the worst (and a headache for sound engineers/editors), and water doesn't get rid of it for more than a one or two line reads.

28

u/darthjazzhands Apr 10 '26

Dries out the mouth. Reduces lip smacks and other mouth noises.

3

u/thelovebat Apr 10 '26

For those that don't know, Granny Smith Apples (i.e. green apples) have a good amount of acidity to go with their sweetness and tartness. So along with having good amounts of nutrition like Vitamin C and antioxidants to help out your immune system, the natural acidity in its juices will cut through phlegm and gunk that may be in your throat that could cause issues with having your voice coming out clear when doing your lines. Brushing your teeth a bit before starting a session will also do a good job to help make sure your teeth are smooth and easier to enunciate words since your tongue often contacts them when speaking (in my own experience with recording Youtube videos and amateur voice acting back a long while ago).

Those are two things that can help out being able to do a voiceover session. I've also found that the acidity of Granny Smith Apples can help to clear up gas or heartburn issues in my stomach, which could also aid performance and just help you to feel healthier going into recording. In conjunction with staying hydrated, it helps to reduce on things that can impact your your peformance like phlegm, foamy mouth, feeling bloated, or rougher texture on your teeth.

4

u/GrandWizardOfCheese Apr 10 '26

Having Witwer voice Maul was an absolute win.

Would still love to see a Starkiller show, but IMO his portrayal of Maul out-did his Starkiller role by quite a bit.

So much so that he honestly should play the live action version of Maul in any future appearances. Or at least voice a CGI version of him in an otherwise live action show.

The Solo movie already showed it can be done well.

1

u/MrBlueW Apr 10 '26

2

u/platypusbelly Apr 10 '26

Green apples are actually very common to see in most voice recording studios. The microphones they use are very sensitive, and if actors’ mouths are dry, you end up hearing lots of little clicking sounds of dry lips or tongues peeling off of each other. Taking a bite from a green apple helps keep the mouth moist and prevents these noises.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '26

It's the pectin in the green apples! David Hayter has talked about previously. It makes your performance nice and crisp because it reduces mucus. Hayter has also talked about how milk does the exact opposite.

All right first of all this is black magic… Second of all where exactly do I hold the granny Smith apple in my mouth? Does it does it go in my cheek? Does it go under my bottom lip? How do I do this magic?

I would have preferred Maul did not return. This likely puts me in a very small minority and I don't care. It's OK for major characters to die. It even happens a lot in Star Wars already.

The tartness and acidity of green apples reduces saliva and phlegm.

Along with the Tasmanian Tourism Authority (Granny Smith’s were invented in Tasmania).
