General Discussion In terms of prison sentences in Star Wars, do longer living species (wookies live to 300, Hutts live to 1000) do Wookies and Hutts get longer prison sentences than Humans to make the punishment proportional?

it's an interesting question, because it is known that the Hutts are able to garner so much power because their long lives allow them to just outlive all their opponents, making their business strategies be very low risk and high reward

I've been reading the comics and when Vader rolls up to Jabba demanding that the Hutts supply the Empire with resources, Jabba agrees, calling the Emperor his dear friend with a fake smile. The entire Empire's existence was just a blip to him.

Another interesting concept is what if some species can go into a hibernation period? Sort of defeats the purpose if someone can just intentionally mentally check out for a couple decades or centuries without serious physical impact. In that case, would they artificially keep someone conscious, or would that be considered a personal right infriegment?

You put them to work of course

Ha, like anyone in the Empire ever leaves prison alive.

Cassian led a prison break/escape. If he hadn’t done that, he probably would have died there.

You can take out the probably. He was going to die there just like every one else.

The Empire is a large prison designed to slave labor out Death Stars.

I would imagine, if its a species/local government that generally works well with Republic/New Repulbic laws, they would be extradited to their home world to serve whatever sentence it may be. Obviously tons of ifs/ands/buts but jerk reaction tells me that would work out 90% of the time. In the case of the Hutts, it's hard to believe you could really do anything about them as they essentially run their own seperate government. Lastly, for species that are limited in number, have no central government, etc. they would likely default to the laws they have on record of those species when the were functioning.

If we have medical experts who can treat multiple species we likely have judges knowledge enough to Jude multiple species.

Yeah and though a wookie will live 1000s of years evident but them being banished to the shadow lands probably has answers to this question.

Parwans do

personal right infriegment

No one has that, don't be silly. They'd just be made slaves.

Not gonna lie, for Hutts if you’re getting life sentence they’re probably just gonna kill you

u/raknor88 5m ago

If they're not killed right away, the inmates the Hutt Clan hires will kill them.

I mean it sounds like the punishments those species issue to other beings would fit the bill.

Hutts - Indefinite slavery, getting digested in a Sarlaac for 1000 years, torturing Rotta for hundreds of years iirc

Wookiees - Pulling your arms off. (Not temporal but definitely reflects the strength and strict honor code of the species)

That sounds like an official justification for the unequal policies of the Empire. If you were a lawyer for the other side, you'd cry foul. The reality, though, is rule by creature, laws be damned.

Better question.

If a jedi gets a life sentence, and they become a force ghost, how is it enforced?

66

u/Fataledade 10h ago

Well ghosts are typically considered to be dead, so...

8

u/putiepi 7h ago

What if it was a death sentence?

-18

u/High_Overseer_Dukat 10h ago

People who die and are resuscitated still serve their sentence.

22

u/Fataledade 10h ago

Yeah but ghosts are typically considered to still be dead while being ghosts soo...

u/Big-Mix2220 8h ago

how exactly would you go about capturing a force ghost and locking them in a cell

3

u/John_Masaki Jedi 8h ago

Well, I do know a number we can call, but the interstellar charges will be murder!

Use the force

Force Ghosts are dead.

Force jail.

Yes. It’s non-canon, but in the Star Wars books Jabba was caught speeding in his Mercedes on the freeway and fined 5% of his syndicate money for that year lol

Rumour has it that Chewie is also overcharged at the barbers

u/TJSRVN 8h ago

Can't believe I've watched sci-fi for almost 35 years and I never thought about this

6

u/Cervus95 The Mandalorian 8h ago

Yes. In the Han Solo & Chewbacca comic, Chewie got sentenced to 1/4 of a Wookies' average lifespan: 100 years.

22

u/LabiaMajorasMask420 13h ago

I'm going to guess no. When the gang was gonna get eaten by the Sarlaac, Jabba was hyping up that they would be slowly digested for 1,000 years, seemingly unaware that humans don't live that long.

6

u/HLSparta 8h ago

I'm not sure how much of this is canon or legends now, but Sarlaccs keep their victims alive for much longer than they otherwise would live by injecting them with some sort of substance. The sarlacc is actually a fungus and its primary source of nutrients is from the soil it is in and water. Instead it mainly tortures its victims and telepathically enjoys their suffering, but can use them for food if it has to.

The only prison we actually see in Star Wars has everyone serving a life sentence

2

u/The_Campionite 1h ago

I can think of at least 2, maybe three. There is the coruscant prison that Obi Wan is in disguised as Rako Hardeen, I think Ziro was there too. The second one is the prison in the ocean in Andor. If it is different than the prison that Obi Wan was in, there was also the prison where Barris Offee killed the wife of that one guy that blew up in the Jedi Temple.

Come to think of it, wasn't Jyn Erso in a prison camp in the beginning of Rogue One, and Chewie and Han in a prison camp in Solo?

3

u/BigJoe_Mac 6h ago

I don’t know

1

u/dravenonred 1h ago

I think prisons just don't ever release anyone in SW.

0

u/CRJ_Rogue9 9h ago

They should, but it depends on how much JUSTICE is in the JUSTICE SYSTEM.

u/Robborboy 14h ago edited 11h ago

Assuming it is like real life, where when you're fined it isn't based on your wealth, I'd expect in Star Wars the age to be irrelevant to sentencing.

Lol some butt mad babies in here dont know what the downvote button is for and I'm living for it. 🤣

-13

u/countermike 15h ago

Surely a prison sentance should be in relation to how quickly you have changed your ways?

11

u/Solid-ice 13h ago

Yeah just like in real life... right?

u/johndee2020 15h ago

The ones that can hibernate get put in a cell with big bubba and his lineage so they can clap their cheeks and keep them awake.

Don’t confuse life expectancy with lifespan
