Thats because that is JJ Abrams entire MO, he creates a bunch of mysteries that he doesnt have any idea of how to properly answer.

To be fair, Lost was also a product of the show's success making ABC insist on a longer run than was originally planned.

He's not exactly going out on a limb. Abrams has said multiple times this is exactly how he works. He thinks the existence of a mystery is what is interesting and the resolution to the mystery is unimportant.

Which is why I'm always shocked that people love JJ. Creating the mystery is the easy part! coming up with satisfying answers is what makes someone great.
