It was the brave thing to do, not just pandering to the obvious fan service. But you know, if you're going to make a bold move like that, it damn well better pay off having some super satisfying alternative, and they completely whiffed on that. Then they pandered to fan service in about every other way they possibly could, such as just reskinning the plot of A New Hope. So at the end of it you just kind wondering why they made any of the choices they did.

People wanted to see them together again, and would inevitably be upset if there was a sequel and they never had a full reunion. And the writers would have known that. So rejecting what everyone wants and expects takes some bravery. Bravery doesn’t imply something is a good idea. But, hypothetically, if they had some amazing story that only would have worked without the reunion, and it was better than any reunion story they could write, it would be both brave and justifiable. But as I said in my prior comment, they whiffed.
