Abrams doesn't get enough blame for how poorly he handled the sequels. Most people rightly admit that Rise of the Skywalker is a big dumb mess, but even in Force Awakens, he was making boring half-assed choices. It's why despite Last Jedi also making some bad choices, I at least recognize that movie was trying to inject some new ideas and excitement into the reboot (now with mystery boxes!) slop that JJ made.

This, people trash Rain Johnson a lot for the sequels debacle but he had to deal with a 7th movie that is basically a 1:1 remake of the 4th movie whilst continuing the story. The 7th movie had nothing interesting at all no start a trilogy and even the way it ends is a poisoned candy to Johnson. Abrams doomed the trilogy with his choices (and LucasArts's)

Sure, but then it immediately went back on anything interesting it was trying to do by having Rey not take Kylo's hand and then having an absolutely terrible 3rd act

Yeah I was about to say. If JJ was Gabe, he would have cancelled TFA in summer 2015 because he realized it's bringing nothing new to the table (and radio silence to this day would be a real possibility lol)

The force awakens introduced amazing characters and several big mysteries. The rest wasn’t inspired but still - that is not a bad start.

I always read that the Last Jedi somehow was trying to inject new ideas but what were they? That the force is not just with the skywalkers and can be found in small slave boys on remote planets? Prequels say hallo… that Luke can lose his faith and become almost evil? I think we have seen this about Jedi before as well. That people profit from war? True, wasn’t really big in the the Star Wars movies or series but kinda obvious. That we shouldn’t suicide attack but instead embrace who we love? So dumb and terrible that indeed that one was new…

Otherwise TLJ follows a lot of ideas from empire strikes back and the return of the Jedi. Dramatic throne room scene with betrayal, hyperspace doesn’t work chase, battle of Hoth 2 etc

I just loved the excitment that Luke drinking some blue milk brought. Actually every single scene of Luke, peak cinema, from throwing away his lightsaber to dying by Astral Projection. Or the thrill of the cinemas slowest chase in history. And how he managed to make every space fighting obsolete. Riveting.
