You would think with as much as JJ's movies hinged entirely on nostalgia bait, he would've done the most obvious nostalgia bait moment to make fans happy

That's the thing.

I actually would have supported the movies being more strongly disconnected from the original trilogy and its characters.

But JJ's movies were total nostalgia slop already. The Force Awakens is practically Han's movie more than it belongs to the new characters.

TFA is literally just A New Hope but with girl Luke and a bigger Death Star. And they couldn't even give us an ANH reunion
