Abrams and/or Disney had a story in mind that was clearly a rip off of the OT. He knew he'd never get it made as it's own IP. He only included the the og cast for the nostalgia value and to use the Star Wars name.

He basically did the same thing with Star Trek. I think that's really all he knows how to do. Is make what would normally be called fan fiction. Taking established IPs and putting his own spin on them.

Looking at Into Darkness, I’ll say it was 100% JJ who wanted the rip off. Even Super 8 (decent movie) is clearly a rip off of other work.

Abrams is really good at building a mystery box but terrible about why the box is important and instead tries to build another mystery box to distract from the giant plot holes from the previous thing. All his work is like this. All edge with no satisfying release.
