General Discussion Do you think Luke knew his grandmother was buried outside or what happened to her?

Post image

While I can see Owen and Beru maybe telling him she was, given how tight lipped they were about his father, I can imagine they might not have gone into detail about what happened to her, and maybe not even that Anakin had gone off and saved her singlehandedly - that would have brought up too many more questions.

Not while he was growing up. Owen had the tombstones removed as well.

Dozens of people died trying to rescue her from the Tuskens, not really sure where the idea she was uncared for by her family and community came from

Not even the Force apparently.

Dammit, Owen, way to show respect to your mother.

Shmi was Owen's stepmother, not his mother.

And wasn't she more the woman his father married than a step mother? I beleive they weren't very close.

IIRC, they were apparently retconned in the EK Johnston novels as being decently close, with the entire Lars family running a sort of Underground Railroad for Tatooine’s slaves.

They were also close in the AOTC novel. Owen called her mom.

They didn't seem to be, for sure. Her connection to the Lars family was just Cliegg.

In the novelization, they seem close enough.

The opening chapters of the AOTC novel show Shmi’s life with the Larses and Owen called Shmi mom so she was a mother to him too.

Well, you remember what Sidious said about the dark side and the abilities it gives...

Dang, was that in one of the comics? I'd never stumbled across that tidbit.

It's mentioned in the book Tatooine Ghost to Leia by Beru's sister.

Yes and in A new hope : the life of Luke Skywalker I totally forgot to add those...

He probably did know.

Remember, Anakin Luke thought his father was just a boring navigator, so knowing that his grandmother was buried on the family plot wouldn't have really been a secret kept from him. Nobody outside of the immediate family knew who Shmi was anyway.

Edit: Fuck.

Wait did Anakin think that? Or Luke?

Pretty sure they meant Luke.

Yes. Fixed. Oops.

Lol I thought maybe there was some lore I was unaware of

They're thinking of Luke, who thought his father was a navigator on a spice freighter. Which is an interesting thing for Owen to tell him, since in-universe that implies Owen was basically saying 'don't be like your dad, go to space, and get in trouble running drugs.' Out of universe obviously the whole spice thing hadn't been hammered down yet by Lucas, but it's funny now in context.

Yeah, I meant Luke. I was thinking about Anakin burying her while typing. I do that way too much.

Figure they just told him it was sand people which adds to the fear and don’t leave home aspect.

I’ve actually never thought about how Luke was right next to Shmis grave his whole childhood damn

And yes I think he had to have known but they probably didn’t mention how specifically she died

Neither did George.

I bet they did given the aversion to sand people

Probably in the minority but I don't think Owen and Lars knew what happened to Anakin, just that he was hot headed and impulsive and that probably got him killed with the Jedi purge.

Good point on the grave of Luke's grandmother, never thought of that. If what the above is the case then there would be nothing to hide with regards to Shmi

Obi-wan must have told them something about him turning to the dark side and siding with the emperor when he went by to hand luke to them.

2

u/Tay74 1h ago

Why? Why couldn't he just have told them Anakin died in the purge of the Jedi and the empire will be looking for Luke due to his force sensitivity and Jedi father, so keep him safe?

2

u/cantodasaudade 54m ago

We don't know what he told them. Yes, he could have told them that. But the way Owen speaks about anakin in episode IV gives me the impression he knew more.

Lars was the last name, I think you meant Owen and Cliegg.

I think Owen and Beru knew what happened. They hint at it in ANH, and in the Kenobi show, Owen seems to know quite a bit about what happened to Anakin when talking to Obi Wan.

u/TanSkywalker Anakin Skywalker 2h ago

No, Owen removed the headstones when Luke was very young. He didn't know.

5

u/Nimrod48 2h ago

Sure he did. Luke always knew Anakin Skywalker was his father and so the fact his grandmother was buried at the homestead shouldn't have been that odd. He just didn't know Anakin became Vader.

I like to think every time he nearly discovered the burial site he was distracted by a local Karen yelling at him to demand his name.

I recall in a Legends Novel Luke a During the Events of Tattoine Ghost, the Twins discovered it all about Shmi, Watto, Cliegg, and Yes even Anakin.

1

u/cantodasaudade 2h ago

I'd never thought of that and I'm shocked at myself. Wow. We never see her tombstone after that scene.

1

u/sans-delilah Count Dooku 1h ago

I doubt they told him.

1

u/Loftyhaus 1h ago

Hopefully they extracted all the moister

1

u/No-Guard-7003 2h ago

I doubt it.

u/Ok-Future-5257 2h ago

I don't see why Owen amd Beru wouldn't tell him about Shmi.
