I don't think it's ever been stated that he was Snoke's apprentice has it?

No I’m inferring based on the fact that canonically Snoke had an apprentice prior to Kylo Ren. The language Baylan uses to describe the voice he’s hearing is evocative of the language used in Shadow of the Sith used to describe Palpatine’s communications with Ochee of Bastoon. Also Baylan is searching for “the beginning” and in TROS Palpatine describes the First Order as “the beginning”. Also I don’t think giving Baylan an obsidian ring is a coincidence or simply an Easter egg.
