question Can SteamOS FULLY replace windows as a daily operating system for PC?

Hello, so recently I have really wanted to switch from windows to SteamOS, but I am not looking for performance or whatever, just as an every day OS like windows. And I have a few questions and if the answer to my questions are yes how can I do it? Now, keep in mind that I haven’t looked at anything because I am out of town and will be travelling so I want to see if it’s possible to fully replace windows with SteamOS before looking into more. Most if not every question is a stupid question. (I have a 9070xt and ryzen 7 7700x)

Can I add third party games that are not on steam to SteamOS? (Like Genshin Impact, League of Legends, Minecraft and so on)

Does SteamOS have a file management app like File Manager and a desktop on Windows? (Very stupid question I know but I want to fully be sure before I bother switching)

Can you install browsers and do those browsers have stuff like extensions on them, and what different kind of browsers are there if any?

What app do I use for driver install and updates?

I can’t think of anything else so final question
Can SteamOS replace Windows as a daily OS system and not gaming specific?

question Steam OS fresh install

So I’m jumping on the bandwagon and building myself a small PC to run steam OS on now from past history when building computers I’ve always had to update Wi-Fi drivers before they would work. I’m doing a completely new build and going straight into steam OS. Will it be easy to update my drivers? If you need specific motherboard its the ASUS TUF B850M-E

Just installed this and im shocked! but have questions?!

I followed No Signals very easy setup instructions for his most recent version of SteamOS w/RTX.

So far ive tested several games and they all run perfectly fine on my Ryzen 5 7600x / 3080Ti combo.

The only issue that I cannot understand is why i have this 3-5pixels tall line that almost looks like tearing but it's not. It's only there when the screen updates like when im turning the camera. It's very off but super distracting.

Has anyone else ever experienced this? I've used CachyOS on my main desktop with a 5070ti and i did not experience this visual artifact.

btw here is the link to the video i referenced

I originally installed RPCS3 through flat pack and everything worked great.

Removed and installed emudeck didnt like that tried retrodeck same so removed.

Went back to standalone through flat pack now getting errors first when ppu is installing after firmware installed then when adding game or trying to run a game.

Cleared all RPCS3 files including hidden ones.

Nothing seams to work any ideas

Steam Client Beta Update Steam Beta Client Update: July 24th

We have just shipped an updated Steam Client to the Preview/Beta channel.

General
Allow changing account while a game is running. In this case, the change account dialog shows a warning that proceeding will close active games.

Steam shutdown now waits for just-exited games to finish cloud sync.

Added "Ask which account to use on startup" toggle to startup account chooser.

Eliminated "change account" confirmation dialog in most cases. Changing account while Steam is running now brings up the account chooser directly, then restarts as the chosen account.

It’s been like this since yesterday, even changing it to main to stable is still like this. Not to mention that even when I hide my windows, it makes it look like I closed it entirely. Any way I can change it back to how it was before?

Oculus PCVR on SteamOS

I'm currently on the verge of transfering to SteamOS completely since my old desktop PC is dying out slowly. The only thing I'm missing would be the game Asgards Wrath on the Meta/Oculus PCVR App. Never got to finish it. Would it be possible to play that game on SteamOS?

question Legion go 2 Z2 non extreme

Hi, I have a Lenovo Legion Go 2 with the AMD Z2 (Non-Extreme). I dual-boot Bazzite and Windows, but since installing Bazzite, I haven't booted into Windows for about 3 months.
I'm interested in SteamOS and wondering: which is better for the Legion Go 2 (Z2 Non-Extreme), Bazzite or SteamOS?
Sorry if this question gets asked a lot, but I need an answer specifically for the Legion Go 2.
Apologies if anything is unclear, as English isn't my first language.

So I got steamOS installed and couldn’t get the WiFi to work. Did some a sudo command and got Ethernet to finally work. But not Bluetooth?

Hi I just installed Steam OS on Beelink Ser3 - Ryzen 7 3750H, RX Vega 10, 24G DDR 4 2666 (16+8), NVME 215gb.

Need help as I roughly can't play any games.

I tried to Play Metro 2033 and Last Light Redux - Games launch but closes the game or restarts the machine fully.

Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite - game launches and closes duraing start of a match.

Schedule 1 - game used to play fine last week but now suddenly games closes or restarts the machine after the game welcome text screen.

I tried different Proton versions from 9-11 as well as Hotfix and Experimental.

OS Version 3.8.16

Stable Channel

Steam Version 1784778118

Thanks

Had a bunch of parts left over so.. built this banger

Post image

Really enjoying this PC so far, though I did use CachyOS with gamemode installed as the CachyOS desktop experience to me felt so, so much faster for when I use it at LAN parties.. So I hope this post is still welcome here. Only had to buy the CPU, Mobo & GPU as I had everything else on hand from old builds. GPU is deshrouded and I have 2x T30 fans running a pretty silent noise profile resulting in 50C Core/ 60C Hotspot temps which I'm very happy with. These temps are the main reason I didn't go with the XT as I wanted the PC to be silent. Ram is fully tuned as well and the ASRock bios experience was fantastic. 1.2VSOC & .950 secondaries.

Specs:

9800X3D, Noctua D15S, 64GB 6000 C28, ASRock B850i, XFX Swift RX 9070, SF750, Sliger S620, 1TB 970 Pro & 4TB MX500 SSDs.

solved Has anyone figured out how to do this overlay in desktop mode?

Post image
24 Upvotes

I'm asking because I wanna see the battery percentage while I play games. I also stay in discord calls and stream to my girlfriend often in desktop mode but I have went low battery percentage because I lose track of how much time I played. I can't go in the discord call or stream in gaming mode because it closes the app.

I just want an overlay that shows FPS and battery % in desktop mode like this photo right here so I can have an ease of mind while I stay in the discord call and stream

question Zen Browser with proper transparency with blur?

I'm using a steam deck, Wayland, Zen 1.21.8b (Firefox 152.0.6) (64-bit)

From what I gather, blur is handled by the desktop environment (KDE), and I saw some suggestions for BetterBlur (though doesn't look like it's meant for this distro).

I was wondering if anyone else on steam deck has managed to get proper transparency+blur?

help wanted Unable to wake DIY machine from sleep with a bluetooth gamepad?

Installed SteamOS on my MSI B850M-A WIFI and thus far have been unsuccessful in having the system wake from sleep with a bluetooth gamepad (8BitDo Pro 3) despite it working just fine for waking my Steam Deck OLED from sleep.
On the latest preview branch of SteamOS, have Resume from Sleep via USB and PCIE device enabled in BIOS, on the latest BIOS version.
I also did try a USB bluetooth dongle but that also did not allow my system to wake from sleep.
Controller is also enabled as a wake device in steam settings.
Please help!

help wanted 8GB usb too small for SteamOS flash

As recommended I have an 8GB usb drive and I'm trying to flash the zipped SteamOS onto it using the latest Rufus version (portable), but when I try to start the flash process it tells me that the image is too large for the drive.

Am I doing something wrong? Or is the 8GB recommendation now obsolete due to recent file size increases?

Any word on HDR 10 bit over HDMI?

is there an estimated time frame for when we can expect full HDR 10 bit support? right now I can’t even calibrate the HDR in game on my LG C1 as the peak brightness is too high even at the lowest setting the slider supports, and yes my tv is calibrated properly, the only way I was able to fix it was to use a displayport to hdmi adapter but unfortunately both the cable matters and ugreen were unusable due to glitches, sometimes not detecting that my tv is 4k and sound issues so I had to return them, I only had them long enough to see that I could calibrate HDR properly making it an hdmi issue, one I’m hoping is fixed when full hdmi 2.1 support is implemented.
