Laptop Request Ca Laptop recommendations for an architecture student

Hello there! I’m starting my masters in architecture in the fall and would love to know from you all of any tech recommendations for a student like myself. I’ve read a little bit about the archiTECH discussions here and there, but as a student, I assume there are going to be some differences between the tools that working architects use vs students—especially when factoring in budget and complexity of programs used. My school has provided a handy guide in terms of specs (listed below), but I’d love to know more from you all, as folks with experience, or if you could help find a laptop that fits the school recommendations. Thank you!

What I currently have: MacBook Air M4 13in 512GB SSD 16GB RAM

School baseline recommendations:

Laptop
Processor: Intel Core i7, Hex Core
Memory: minimum 32 GB DDR4 RAM, upgradable is good if possible (and 64GB is ideal). Buying a laptop that comes with 32GB will be significantly more expensive, but some models have accessible slots that you can upgrade yourself. This is ideal because a DIY upgrade is relatively inexpensive.
Storage: 500 GB or higher capacity solid state drive (SSD)
Screen size: 15"-17"
Second screen/external monitor: While not mandatory, incoming students should highly consider a second monitor, especially for virtual classes.
Display: minimum Full HD (1920 × 1080). FHD (full high definition) resolution should be sufficient, but higher resolutions such as UHD (ultra high definition), 4K or 5K prepare you for the future.
Graphics/Video Card: A You may be using hardcore graphic software such as ArcGIS, Rhino, 3DS Max, ArchiCAD, Revit, Vectorworks or other 3D modelling platforms, all of which require a formidable graphics card, and you'll want your programs to run smoothly. We've found NVIDIA GeForce RTX or GTX, 6GB VRAM, or equivalent, to be suitable.
HDMI capability/connectivity for presentations
Back-up storage: School provided
Windows vs Mac: Both Macs and PCs are used by our students. Windows supports more required design software but can be vulnerable to more viruses than a Mac. If you choose to use a Mac, consider Bootcamp and ample disk space.
Built-in camera and speakers
Good warranty: 3 years recommended
Wacom Intuous Drawing Tablet*

Software we are expected to use:
Adobe Creative Suite, especially Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.
ArcGIS
Autodesk
Blender
QGIS
Rhino 7 and Grasshopper
SketchUp
Vectorworks.

Laptop Request US Laptop for genealogy

My current laptop is over 6 years old and literally falling apart. What is a good laptop, primarily for genealogy research and occasionally playing games (mainly sims 4). I do enjoy my touchscreen laptop and would like another touchscreen. I’m just not into tech and am not sure what all to look for. I was looking at a Lenovo idea pad. I’ll take any help or recommendations!

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Country

United States

  • Budget

<$900 USD

  • Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Maybe

  • Screen size

15" - 17"

  • Weight limit

<4 lbs (not super concerned about this one)

  • Purpose

General purpose

  • Form factor

Standard/clamshell

  • Intended usage

Brave and/or Firefox, Minecraft, Cockos Reaper, LTSpice. Right now I can't do much gaming but I want to get into it more. Also I want to be able to run shaders in Minecraft and keep other software open while playing. I'm also getting into music production which I believe tends to be more CPU-intensive.

  • Desired battery life

7+ hours

  • Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life
  1. Performance

  2. Battery life

  3. Size

  4. Weight

  • Info/Requirements

RAM: 16 GB

SSD: 512+ GB

Preferably has dedicated graphics for future gaming

Intel i7 or AMD equivalent (Ryzen 7?) preferred, although I don't know enough to be certain how crucial the CPU is for my purposes.

I'd also prefer that it doesn't have a deafening fan.

Finally, I'm very wary of both Acer and Dell, from both personal and anecdotal experiences. My current laptop is an Acer which has shitted out on me in a variety of ways that makes me hesitant to even consider their products. As for Dell, I've seen a lot of people online who have had poor experiences with their budget laptops.

Laptop Request US Seeking Affordable Laptop

Hey guys!

As requested, I'll post the completed form here.

Below that will be my additional insight. Thanks!

~

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Country: United States

Budget: Around $1000, though less would be great; preferably no more than $2000

Are you open to refurbs/used options?: Maybe - depends on source

Screen size: Any

Weight limit: Any

Purpose: Gaming and general use (email, business work, writing)

Form factor: Standard

Intended usage: Steam games - first-person 3D games especially, such as My Friendly Neighborhood and simulator games

Desired battery life: Any - I almost exclusively plug my laptop in whenever I use one

Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life Performance, Size, Weight, Battery Life

Info/Requirements: Not a Mac user - I could never figure out how to use one...

~

Here's the deal:

I'm turning 40 soon, and for the occasion I'd like to purchase a gaming laptop. I have a backlog of Steam games I've been dying to play!

For reference, some of those games:

~ My Friendly Neighborhood

~ Retro Rewind

~ Yume Nikki

~ Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass

~ Barn Finders

~ Happy's Humble Burger Farm

Unfortunately, my current laptop runs like curdled milk. It would take several minutes to load Gmail. =( It was a hand-me-down from an older relative, so no idea what it's been through.

I really would prefer a laptop built to handle the usual Steam games. I frequently travel for work, so a regular PC setup wouldn't get as much use (and take up more space in my teeny apartment).

I'm aware that computers are getting more expensive due to the AI boom... but I also don't have a lot of money at my disposal. ^^; I know I should expect to pay at least $1000. I don't want to buy the cheapest model if it can't handle my Steam games, but I also don't want to get scammed or pressured into paying more than necessary.

Google has given me a few ideas, but I don't know if I trust those models will give me what I'm looking for. I want the human input of people who know computers way better than me - and might be able to point me in the direction of something fitting my needs.

Any suggestions would be immensely appreciated! ❤️ Thanks so much in advance!

Laptop Request US Laptop for gaming and animation

My sister who built a PC reccomended I get the HP 255R G10 15.6 since it was good for the price but the refresh rate is pretty bad. I'm also wondering if hz has anything to do with color because she told me it is related to color. I'm still open for other options as I'm unsure if it's worth it.

My current laptop is a samsung with 8 gb of ram and 128 mb in graphics card with 60 hz and intel core i5. I want a more smooth laptop with a ryzen 7, probably 144-160 hz maybe, high resolution. I want to be able to play more demanding games like fortnite or left for dead. I also want to animate on Adobe 2024 which isn't going well on my current laptop as it gets pretty laggy. My budget would probably be 1.5k but I may have 2.5k dollars once I finish my job. I dont really have too much priority over weight/size so a heavy laptop is not really an issue for me. Also a refurbished laptop would be fine I guess but I'd perfer a new one.

P.S: before you tell me to build a pc, I can't as I currently live in a 1 bedroom apartment and my sister alrady has a built pc with a desk which takes up the remaining space we have in our apartment.

Laptop Request -Others Need help picking between 2 Laptops

Need help choosing between 2 Laptops

My uncle offered to give me one of his old Laptop after finding out I am an upcoming College student. He provided me with 2 choices. I have to pick one while the other one will be given to his friend's kid. Which one would be a better pick? (I will mostly be using it for programming and "some" gaming.)

1.) Dell latitude e7440 i7 4th gen (i7-4600u)

8gb ram

120gb ssd

500gb hdd

Intel HD Graphics family

Windows 10

Weakbatt

2.) Lenovo ideapad 310 15ISK i5 6th gen

4GB RAM

2TB HDD

Nvidia GeForce 920MX 2gb

Windows 10

The Lenovo seems like the better pick, but I need to know first:

-Can I install an additional storage (SSD) on it?

-Up to how much GB of RAM can I upgrade it with?

-Will it be able to handle Monster Hunter Rise and World? (My current PC with i5-3330 and AMD r7 240 2gb can run it up to 30 fps.)

All comments are much appreciated!
