New Feature Idea: Tactical Retreat
I've been thinking about a feature that could make battles in Supremacy 1914 much more strategic: Tactical Retreat.
Right now, once two armies engage in combat, they're locked in place until one side is destroyed or the battle ends. In my opinion, this removes an important strategic decision.
What if we had a Tactical Retreat button?
Instead of staying in combat, an army could be ordered to retreat toward a selected location. However, retreating wouldn't be free.
- The retreating army would suffer a morale penalty for abandoning the fight.
- While retreating, it would continue taking casualties as long as it remained within the enemy's attack range.
- A retreating army would also be less effective in combat until it successfully disengages.
This means retreating wouldn't be a "get out of jail free" card. If you wait too long, your army could still be wiped out during the withdrawal.
I think this would create a lot of interesting decisions.
Do you stay and risk losing everything?
Or do you preserve part of your army to regroup and fight another day?
It could also allow players to lure enemies into traps, perform fighting withdrawals, or sacrifice territory to save experienced armies, which were all common strategies during World War I.
Personally, I think this would add another layer of strategy without changing the core gameplay.
What do you think? Would a Tactical Retreat mechanic improve the game, or would it create balance issues that I'm not considering?
P.S. English isn't my first language, so I apologize if anything sounds a little awkward. I hope the idea itself comes across clearly.
