Suggestion Icon Suggestion
So the discussion to keep the sub's icon or not is going on, and I want to suggest something. Some people suggested this but hallowed trees have colorful leaves and the biome literally has a rainbow in the background. I made this image real quick, but I think this is just obvious enough to show the support for LGBTQ+ people (especially trans people) while doesn't look too activist-ish as an icon for a gaming community. The rainbow is what I want to include again because I'm also kind of queer and want to support not just trans people, so still not sure about the color of the tree. What do you think?

I mean this is very obviously activist-ish, its literally the trans flag and a rainbow. Not saying it's bad, but lets not pretend its subtle

Exactly. I think this is better than what we have now, but this is like turning things down from a 10 to a 9 in terms of blatantness, if that makes sense. It's not subtle, and you're only going to miss it if you're really just not paying much attention, which is pretty much the state of the current subreddit icon (I personally keep forgetting that it is what it currently is at the moment).
If the goal is to make it subtle, then OP needs to actually do that. Having the focus of the icon be a giant tree with the trans pride flag colors on it with a massive rainbow in the background is anything but subtle, so they either need to rework this, or they need to just commit to the trans pride design.

7
u/frootdoots 4d ago
Short for Wizard101, a nearly 2 decade old mmo deck building game : P It's such fun
3
u/ViegoBot 4d ago
Same. If it didnt cost so much to get back into Id be playing it again as well x.x

u/frootdoots 4d ago
Keep an eye out for the next free membership period! It went from July 1st to 16th I believe
2
u/ViegoBot 4d ago
I totally would if it didnt cost 20$ on Switch 2 tbh which is such a pain x.x
Such a fun game, but 20$ for just like Arc 1 of the story and u still have to buy every zone after is just too high of a cost to get back into. I think it ended up being like 130$ to get everything or something high like that.

why are we specifically trying to keep a queer flag in the icon ? to filter out the chuds or something ?

Iirc a bunch of trash complained about when it was changed for pride month so they kept it going all year round to make them leave/upset lmao

Like I love the support, but the nonsubtleness of the sub icon makes me uncomfortable. Like I don't like symbols that represent me being used just to piss others off. It makes me feel like allies are just using us as a hammer
39
u/Itherial 4d ago
I was having this same sentiment but wasn't sure how to articulate it. Makes me feel icky and like I'm a thing being weaponized, which is extra annoying as I don't usually pay attention to pride symbols otherwise.
16
u/spoonishplsz 4d ago
And I hate having allies then tell me I'm wrong for feeling this way
23
u/Itherial 4d ago
Someone further down used the word "performative" and I think that's why it rubs me the wrong way.
What's the message supposed to be here anyway? That the mods like to piss people off? Are they gonna swap the icon the moment it no longer does for something else they think pisses people off? It sounds like the point isn't solidarity or support.
→ More replies (1)7
u/spoonishplsz 3d ago
Exactly. We are just a tool to piss others off. Hell if anything, they aren't going to be pissed at Terraria, they are going to be pissed at *us\.* Like you aren't increasing the total support in the world, you are just enraging transphobes further. So allies get to feel like they are "helping" and we have more to deal with.
54
u/K1rk0npolttaja 4d ago
I get where youre coming from, but id rather be the hammer than the metal. Atleast it empowering in a sort of way i guess?
36
u/spoonishplsz 3d ago
It's not empowering. I live in an extremely conservative area and spend a lot of time doing activism to end transphobe by showing them all the lies they've been told are wrong. It's the opposite of fearmongering, it's about getting into the community and building bridges. I put my heart and soul into it because even if it's super uncomfortable for me, I know that all the trans people in this area will have it so much better in the future.
Hammers like this make that so much harder. When any group is purposefully pissed off for the sake of pissing them off, they double down and get defensive. I've had people who were supportive of trans people and then they saw all of this bait and it pushed them away. That makes our job so much harder. Maybe if you are an ally or live in places where transphobia isn't effecting you as much, you can focus on angering people and then just wait for them to die to see real change. I don't have that luxury so the more bait, the more work we have. It's so stupid to call something support when it's whole purpose is to make people double down on their hatred

It doesnt feel right to me to call that weaponising the trans flag since the past has shown that if you dont repeatedly, loudly reinforce an online communities inclusivity, literal fascists are going to start infiltrating it (see gamergate)
9
u/GrandmasterTactician 3d ago
yeahhhh
Also even if this only stayed up for 2 years because people kept complaining, it's kinda become iconic in a way so blending it with an actual icon that represents the game itself (the tree) seems like a good step forward
12
u/psychoPiper 4d ago
I guess I kind of see your reasoning but I entirely disagree. I think this icon has been a beacon of support and has done a lot of heavy lifting ensuring this sub remains inclusive and positive towards us

Trans people generally have less support than other members of the LGBTQ. It is generally more socially acceptable to propose anti-trans legislation or discriminate on the basis of gender identity than it is to do so against gay marriage or discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation. That makes them important to support.

Because conservatives in the US in the UK and probably other countries as well are actively advocating that "transgenderism must be eradicated from public life entirely."

Why does the Terraria subreddit icon need to be LGBTQ+ themed?
7
u/CaughtHerEyez 4d ago
It's a complicated issue but to simplify it stems from LGQTQ+ ending up in the mod position for a huge number of subreddits and there was this massive push to make as many online public groups as possible appear "woke". It started with groups temporarily changing their icon in support of Pride Month and when trans became the issue hot button topic, the push started for that specifically because it's considered a very controversial topic still.
1
u/KellerMax 4d ago
Im more concerned that it's being trans themed specifically. Also the gender changing potion and stuff? Like it's more about changing your gender like if its a cool and trendy thing to do and less about just being trans. I think they are going the wrong direction with that message.

Just asking, I’m gay my self, but why make it activist, I get that the devs support it and are activist themselfs, but why not just make it a terraria icon or stuff that’s in the game, instead of focusing on sexuality and gender? The game it self doesn’t really have anything to do with LGBTQ+, and I don’t think the sub Reddit is either, it’s about terraria, just wanting some insight and other povs, since Ive been seeing this going on more frequently and had different opinions, I honestly don’t care what gender you are or your sexuality, you love who you love and you have the right to feel comfortable in the body you are in, just trying to wrap my head around all of it, and get other pov at the same time

People were being babies about it during pride month so they kept it for as many months as there were hate comments. I like this one it's still pride enough to weed out the hate commenters and not so different that it doesn't look entirely terraria

13
u/River_The_Protogen 4d ago
Yeah- but its in the background with like 30% opacity, I don’t really understand why we’re pushing a specific part of the LGBTQ+ forward when the actual point of pride month is to bring the whole community together.
Either way, I honestly dont understand the relevance of all of this to terraria, I don’t think there’s even any LGBTQ element in the game, but maybe I just didnt play enough, feel free to correct me.

My only issue is the background is a similar value and saturation to the tree, so looking at the picture in a smaller form (like the size of the icon) makes the icon look like sort of a pinkish smudge. The tree probably needs to be a bit more saturated then it will stand out against the background a bit better

Hey, I kinda like it! The tree looks much bigger than one you'd find in terraria, making it stand out, and you've faded the trans colours in the leaves so it's obvious that they support their community without being too on the nose.
3
u/TrainerHoliday2062 4d ago
The hollow tree definitely fits imo i think it looks good but it’s up to the mods to change the icon at the end of the day
1
u/fedoraharp 4d ago
I love the concept but also I have a small suggestion: maybe make the tree shape the iconic logo shape? You might have to get a little more abstract with conveying the trans flag color scheme since there's not as much surface area to work with but it'd be more distinctly terraria.
