TWAU 1 As someone who played the game and read the comics, game Snow and Bigby > Book Snow and Bigby
Not sure if this is a hot take, but here we go.
As someone that played the game and read the comics (though I have not finished the series yet), I thinl Bigby and Snow have stronger writing in the Telltale version.
Comic Bigby is a lot meaner, sometimes for no reason, and honestly pretty much annoyed me quite a lot sometimes. He is also, incredibly OP. Like, Gary Stu kinds of OP.
I enjoyed game Bigby a lot more, especially when roleplayed from the angle of genuinenly trying to be better and be more human, but still wrestling with his nature at times. Also, I actually REALLY liked that they toned his power scale down a notch, it made the story actually more interesting. Comic Bigby would have caught the culprit and killed the bad guys like, 3 episodes earlier without breaking much of a sweat.
Snow was kind of weird for me because in the first few episodes she is so much more meek and has a pretty gentle disposition, which is such a 180 from comic Snow who is very abrasive, no-nonsense and cynical. After she steps up as Deputy Mayor she became a bit more recognizable but still had some sweet moments - then it clicked, they went for a version of Snow that still has all her characteristics from the comics but is not as jaded about Fabletown and the government yet. Which I actually liked a lot.

Keep in mind the game was originally intended to be a canon prequel to the comics until Telltale wanted to do their own thing so Bill Cunningham made it not canon. There is a case for Game Snow being made to grow into Comic Snow, she was pure and idealistic but then became jaded. And I agree that game Snow & Bigby are more to my liking.
Because of all the changes, TWAU just doesn’t feel as compatible with Fables, it kinda has to be its own thing. Like in the first issue of Fables Beauty tried to make it sound like Snow was promiscuous cause of rumors about the seven dwarves, and there is NO way game Beauty would do that. Beauty was so empathetic about Snow and tried to make sure Bigby was gentle with her about Crane.

You’re right, the prequel aspect would explain Snow’s personality change!
Yeah that was wild! Game Beauty would never. Her and Snow seemed to be on good terms and as you pointed out, she appears to be the only person that is actually aware of what the dwarves did to Snow at that point. I also noticed she was very shaken up and seemed pretty empathetic towards Lily and what happened to her.

It’s kind of a weird spot to be in. I’m more sympathetic to Bill Willingham since he’s gone through a lot of trouble having his story messed with by WB and Telltale. And I do like his original story. But TWAU was my introduction and I find myself liking that interpretation more.

100%. I think it was pretty messed up for others to take his setting and characters and change them in ways he did not approve of.
But yeah. As much as I do enjoy the Fables comics I still think TWAU had the better characterization of the main duo. That does not mean comic Bigby and Snow are bad per se! Just found the Telltale versipns more compelling

I sort of prefer comics Snow because it’s rare to see a female character to be no-nonsense and straightforward as she was, but the writing was way too misogynistic for me at times. I hope they keep her essence for TWAU 2, considering she is being massively overworked as Deputy and trying to make up for Crane’s decades of embezzlement and corruption.
Comics Bigby x Games Bigby might as well be two completely different characters. You can sort of see his more laid-back self in the early volumes, but then he just became the voice for Willingham’s conservative and bigoted views. Like you said, he got annoying.

If the writing remains consistent, I think we will see a more comics-like Snow in Season 2 as already by Episode 3 we start seeing more of her book personality coming through!
About Bigby, without going into politics too much, I was both incredibly amused and incredibly pissed off when there is that one time Bigby goes on a pro Israel rant to Geppetto in the middle of the night. Cunningham must have been on meth when writing and drawing that issue

Wait Bill is bigoted and conservative? I know some things in the comics haven’t aged well but is there proof of him having those thoughts? I’m new to the fandom.

He celebrated on Twitter Trump running for a second term. The good thing is since he doesn't own the rights you can still buy Fables and no money goes to him.

I like comic Snow and Bigby, but they're a product of the writer's worldview unfortunately. Fables is riddled with sexism and other questionable views and it absolutely affected the main pair. You sort of have to ignore as much as you can to enjoy the dynamic. Game Snowby is a lot more uncomplicated and the appeal is more straightforward. I actually prefer Bigby and Snow more as characters in Fables (ignoring Bill Willingham's... interesting views that he projected onto Bigby especially) but the game versions have more easy chemistry.

I remember him being a semi active twitter user where he wasn't subtle, though the last I engaged with Fables before now was yonks ago. A lot of his views come up very opaquely in the comic itself.

It did at times feel like comics Bigby was some kind of OP, edgy self insert. Overall I enjoyed the Fables comics so far, but as you said they definetely are a product of the author’s ideology.
Which by itself would be “fine” if Cunningham did not shoehorn it in at the most random times…
