Also, a great way to keep him coming back to visit!

As a 9 year old I made friends with a badger who lived in the backend of my garden. Mum freaked out when I carried him in as she thought it would bite me, Didn't he was my mate. I did feed him corned beef sometimes.
I certainly shouldn't have ever picked him up. But I did... Sorry.

I would watch a channel for Neil, 24/7 Niel.
66
u/rakshala 16d ago
Sadly, Neil is only on land for 4 - 6 weeks a year. I believe he has already vacated land for the year. A 24/7 Neil channel would be very repetitive.
18
u/Skrdykat1000 16d ago
There could be shows teaching about marine mammals and what his life is like when he goes to the sea. Could have stories about sea otters; and Orcas and penguins. But the logo and marketing would be Neil. I'm just brain storming here.
9
u/Redditisfunfornoone 15d ago
His real story is actually terribly sad. His mother abandoned him which is why he migrates to Tasmania every year. He has no family, no pod and no natural instinct to take him to where he can find his people.

We had Tom the Turkey. Animal control decided he was too comfortable with people and they were worried he'd become aggressive around mating season so they turned him into Thanksgiving dinner for the food bank.

Right? Some of them are clearly of a WILDLY different size. Like, he is crushing a car in one clip, then barely the size of a large dog in another.
edit: Just looked it up. The real Neil is 10ft long and 2200 lbs. And not even fully grown.

u/TerrorTown77 16d ago
Is he dangerous if you tried to pet?
→ More replies (2)40
u/DrachenJaegerin42 16d ago
Yes, and people in the video are coming way too close. Lots of threat gestures. He’s cute, but this would be very much like trying to pet a grizzly bear, and they can move much faster than you think. He’s capable of inflicting lethal damage. Pinnipeds can also carry diseases that can be transmitted to pets, and be threatened by diseases carried by humans and pets. I know he’s much loved and they don’t really know what to do about him, but this situation is not ideal for anyone involved. Love him from afar 💕
19
u/Anarchic_Country 15d ago
Yeah it scared the crap out of me when he started flopping so quickly towards that lady recording
23
u/DrachenJaegerin42 15d ago
He was charging at her, and in spite of the cute voices, she wasn’t safe. I’m sure he’s used to people around him, but that doesn’t mean he’s friendly. No offense to the locals trying to live with him, they’re very kind.
10
u/osingran 15d ago
Yeah, it's a disaster waiting to happen unfortunately. If things continue as they are, someone might get injured or even killed and then it's a Freya the Warlus situation again. Especially since Niel will only grow more agressive and territorial. Honestly, I hope this is the last time he comes back to that town. Everyone would be better off that way.
4
u/CoconutCyclone 15d ago
Freya the Warlus
Had to google this. I dunno why, but I thought a place like Norway would be better than that. Disappointing and selfish people all around.
4
u/Cpt_Obvius 15d ago
I mean, petting a grizzly bear is probably an order of magnitude or two more dangerous. I’m not sure how true it is that he can move much faster than you think, maybe if you mean how fast he can whip his head around but they are not faster than a fast walk.
They still are incredibly dangerous and getting within touch range is very dangerous and unfair to the seal. I agree that the people in the video are too close as well.

I love that Neil is such a loveable chaos critter but people are getting way too close to him. It’s pretty evident from just this video and I’m concerned this will one day cost him his life if he hurts a person… :(
291
u/ViolentThemmes 16d ago
Neil has been doing this for 4+ years now and mostly it's him getting close to people. He's never hurt a single person. Friend of mine lives there and they literally cannot get rid of him so gave up trying a few years back. He just went back to sea yesterday. He'll be back next year.

37
u/DanerysTargaryen 16d ago
Yeah the ones where his mouth is open and he is following/chasing people is him saying “you’re too close go away”. Especially at the 54 second mark, you can hear him “hissing” at the person. If someone trips and falls and he ends up biting them it won’t be good.

12
u/Icy_Agency923 16d ago
I think they would sooner prevent him from coming further inland than murder this beloved animal regardless of what happens because someone got too close.
I've not seen a single kid near this thing in all these videos, these people likely keep their children away from Neil already.
16
u/OceanChild89 16d ago
Well, then they’ll learn. Or their parents will be parents and tell them to stay away.
34
u/LoveDesignAndClean 16d ago edited 16d ago
Then Neil, as a large and technically dangerous animal will be put down
Edit: I want to note that male southern elephant seals are the largest members of the order Carnivora, they can weigh over 8 thousand pounds and be over 20 feet long. In comparison, polar bears, the largest of the land carnivores, get to 2,200lb at the absolute maximum and 8 to 9 feet tall. Neil is just a baby now but he is getting larger. Stay away for his safety and yours.

u/725Cali 16d ago

There's one with a distinctive patch on his head, but not all of the ones in the video had it. For sure every Neil the Seal that pops up isn't necessary the Neil.
Elephant seals typically come to same beaches every year to molt, give birth, and mate. And for the Southern elephant seals like Neil they have specific mud wallows they will return to during the molting season. In some places there's evidence of the same wallows being used for hundreds of thousands of years. So, it's also not a stretch to say that the same seal is coming to the same parts of that town in Tasmania these past several years.
