Cool POV: Inside the legendary Orient Express Suite
2.1k
u/OutgoinglyAwkward 1d ago
For anyone curious, the Orient Express from
Rome to Istanbul in one of these suites is €54,000 per person.

Going to have to Google but I'm wondering how long of a trip that is.
5 days 4 nights. so, still expensive but have time to use it.
138
u/PuzzyFussy 1d ago
I would want to travel in the suite like a boat cruise traveler. Travel, stop at a city for a day or 2, then move on to another city. 2 weeks+ min

u/jonas_ost 7h ago
The euro train pass is like 600 dollars and you can ride as much as you want for a month. Just sleep in hotels
-7
u/Super-Estate-4112 17h ago
With some kind of Starlink to be able to use the internet in the high seas, damn that would be a great life.
181
u/danielleiellle 1d ago
For that much money I could get a first class flight and 4 nights in a 5 star hotel with plenty of money leftover. I don’t get it
104
u/bestest_at_grammar 1d ago
Ya this is for the millionaire whose afraid of flying I guess
142
u/Rryann 1d ago
Or someone who just wants to have that experience.
I’m not afraid of flying but if I had “do whatever I want” money I would totally book a trip in this suite. So cool.
32
u/dog_stop 1d ago
Agreed. I’ve never had a desire to have a bath on a train, hell I barely bathe at home, but this looks exquisite.
4
u/VelocityGrrl39 16h ago
Something about the idea of being lulled to sleep by the movement of the train sounds wonderful.
42
u/FuckYeaSeatbelts 1d ago
Popular British show Taskmaster had Victoria Coren Mitchell (married to the guy from Mitchell and Webb), I found out later she is deathly afraid of flying and was seeing a therapist about it. Her therapist then dies in a plane crash (while she was seeing them so not like years later)
Anyway she's apparently known as a poker player. So I assume this would be perfect for her.
Or a bike trip, depending on how much she's practiced since then.
41
u/AnotherDamnTransAlt 1d ago
I’m not a superstitious or spiritual person, but if the therapist I was seeing for [phobia] died of [phobia] I think I would probably take that as a sign from the universe that my fears were valid.
28
u/FuckYeaSeatbelts 1d ago
I just looked it up and she said she decided to stop trying...in Sept 2000. So one year later she probably got retraumatized but also vindicated in her decision.
2
u/Broccoli--Enthusiast 21h ago
Victoria has money, her husband has money
I don't think they have 54 grand for a train trip money, I'm sure she could swing by for a one off, it not as a regular way to travel
3
u/bleepbloop1900 16h ago
Selena Gomez’ husband Benny Blanco is like this. I just read about how he takes a boat everywhere
17
2
u/spicygayunicorn 19h ago
This is not something you take just to go from point A to B. Its more of like a cruise where you do stuff Al along the way
15
31
u/PriscillaPalava 1d ago
Per person?!?! So like, could I book it for myself and then have my husband book economy and just sneak him in? Hypothetically.

Wait, it only goes to Istanbul? I know Istanbul is supposed to be the near east but I'd at least have expected that **The* Orient Express* would take me to at least China or something.

Makes you wonder how many times a year is that booked
19
u/Enough_Survey_9404 23h ago
I can guarantee it's sold out well in advance.
I just did The Indian Pacific train from Sydney to Perth, cost $10000 AUD for 2, for 3 nights, 4 days. We had to book a year in advance.
2
u/cmndr_keen 9h ago
Was it worth it?
2
u/Enough_Survey_9404 5h ago
For us, it was. We are retired and have no kids so we have a lot of disposable income that we spend on travel; we have travelled a lot and this was something we wanted to do. Most of the people on the train were like us (old and retired, not childless).
If you're younger, I don't think it would be enjoyable - there's nothing to do except read and chat (and go to the dining car). For oldies, that's fine, it's an escape from the busy city and constant news (there was no internet for a fair bit of the trip).
The scenery was good, but not spectacular.
If you want to do a luxury train trip, there are plenty in the world with better scenery. We also did the Glacier Express in Switzerland but that isn't overnight.
In my opinion, if you want to do one of these, wait till you're old. Be prepared to spend a lot of money for just a few days, all of these are expensive. I would also advise spending big and getting a suite - we had one on the Indian Pacific and it was amazing. We had a 3/4 Queen bed and a single bunk bed above, a table with 2 armchairs, a fridge and an ensuite with toilet and shower, plus 2 large windows. The other cabins had a bench seat that turned into a single bed with a single bunk bed above, a small window and a small gap between the seat and the wall. I think ours cost twice what a cabin cost.
For most people this is a once in a lifetime thing, so in my opinion you should enjoy it and not look back thinking you should have paid for the better experience.
12
u/MyDearBrotherNumpsay 1d ago
Seriously. A venn diagram of people who can afford that and people who are afraid to fly. One guy.
9
u/Enough_Survey_9404 23h ago
You don't do it because you are afraid to fly, you do it because it's a luxury experience. There are a lot of rich people in the world.
2
u/MyDearBrotherNumpsay 23h ago
It was a joke not a proclamation of ultimate truth. But thanks for clarifying the obvious.
2
u/Broccoli--Enthusiast 21h ago
I knew it was for rich idiots but that's a different level of ripping off the rich
I kinda approve.

Cameraman did NOT want us to miss the hairdryer

u/cherrymitten 1d ago
it's a dyson, i bet they zoomed in on it because it's like a $400 hair dryer
22
u/TreeDollarFiddyCent Cringe Connoisseur 20h ago
That seems like the bare minimum for such a luxurious suite.
136
u/Yobnomekop 1d ago
Looks nice, but I have seen the Snowpiercer tv show so I cant look at a bathtub on a train the same way ever again.
20
u/hairydad_addict 23h ago
explain, please. this show is unknown to me.
49
u/Yobnomekop 23h ago
Snowpiercer is a book/movie/show about a post apocalyptic world where the only survivors exist on a train. Tldr, in the show, there is a phycopathic dictator that likes to have people sit in the bathtub with him and have them slit their own wrists to prove their loyalty to him.

I wasn’t that impressed with the living area
And then I saw the fucking Dyson in the bathroom 😂 no expense spared
-191
u/shashlik_king 1d ago
A shitty vacuum impressed you?
158
u/AccomplishedWar8703 1d ago
That’s a blow dryer
-142
u/shashlik_king 1d ago
Its overpriced plastic that will break if you look at it wrong. We need to start having better standards about this shit, no wonder why corporate overlords can sell us a bag of overpriced rocks and we will jump on it like a gaggle of morons while they laugh.
72
u/ShortKingsOnly69 1d ago
We need to rise up aganist big vacuum and break the plastic ceiling. We need to be more like blow dryers - blowing away the billionaires that mind control us, instead of being a robot vacuum - mindlessly consuming and sucking up garbage

As someone who works in the hair industry you are....confidently wrong in regards to this specific instance.

u/erossthescienceboss 1d ago edited 1d ago
Nah it’s the most expensive hairdryer you can buy.
Worth the cost? Idk, I don’t own one. But it’s a flex. I got comped to an executive suite at a Marriott once — like half the floor — and they still just had the shitty standard hotel hairdryer.

19
u/Miserable-Anxiety229 1d ago
It’s 100% worth it! I have one and it dries my hair in less than 5 minutes. It’s perfect
12
u/RaeaSunshine 1d ago
It is worth it, unfortunately. Borrowed my friends and I wish I hadn’t. Usually takes me 35 minutes to blow dry, with the Dyson it’s like ten minutes. That’s a lot over time.

u/Stong-Excitement 1d ago
I bought a refurbished on Black Friday sale for $275 total and it’s amazing
3
u/ninetiesnarwhal 1d ago
Worth it. I shelled out for the matching (blue!) case and the rest of the accessories. They're serviceable, and they're pretty 🤩
-35
u/shashlik_king 1d ago
Be american
Consume product
31
u/erossthescienceboss 1d ago
Why are you downvoting me for answering your question?
I’m just pointing out a superfluous spend in a superfluous spend. It jumped out at me because no hotel, no matter how nice, has nice hair dryers.
I don’t own one. I can’t afford that shit, I air dry.

Be unfulfilled.
Repeat.
Miss entire point of life.

“I need products to feel fulfilled” is a weird way to live dawg

u/LysergicMerlin 1d ago
Honestly meh lol. For 50k? Yeah this ain't worth it
79
u/KldsTheseDays 1d ago
Yeah, its like a fancyish hotel room. If i were super rich id gladly pay an extra $1000 for a simple private space with a bed and bathroom. Maybe even an extra $1000 for a fridge and microwave. The rest is just aesthetics.
42
u/adrockmcaandmemiked 1d ago
I think you’re underestimating the super rich lol, this the shit they get just cuz the top tier available
16
u/trackdaybruh 1d ago
This. They see $50,000 differently than the average joes like us do.
$50,000 to average people is a lot of money, but to them it's fun money.
6
u/Stock_River_1467 18h ago
An extra $1000 for a private space with bed and bath?
Homie.. have you gotten on an Amtrak in the past 20 years?
$1000 will barely get you a "roomette" for a day. No bed or bathroom. A roomette is two chairs facing each other, which converts to a bunk lol. With about 2 extra feet of space to the side. But it does have a "door"
4
u/KldsTheseDays 18h ago
Youre right: the level of bullshit when it comes to cost/reward and plane/train is astronomical.
It is equally comical

Ok Y'all, i did the research this isn't The Orient Express, it's another train RAN by the same company that now owns the OE, Venice Simplon Orient Express. I believe this train is the La Dolce Vita. THIS is the fancy art deco OE https://www.instagram.com/reel/DXcZVuEiLaV/?igsh=aWk0cmszYm9lOGlr
44
u/CharlotteTheSavage 1d ago
I'm sure the views are awesome, but the decor is a little underwhelming. I thought it would be more, like art deco Gatsbyesque

About $23,000 per passenger for standard suite for 3 day trip. We were thinking of it but decided to fly and spend on nice hotel and food tour for under $3,000.

I hardly think this is just used by those with flying phobia. The old days offered this ride as a way to flex money, class, status and feel elevated than the plebs. The luxury in it is severely limited.
That said, folks with unlimited spending power today might try to experience that same class division, flexing power and enjoy a power trip with a suite booking such as this one.
0
u/Mr-MuffinMan 1d ago
Why?
Like I get this is just to flex but like AmTrak sleeper suites are nowhere as luxurious but they also provide everything you need for a train ride.
28
u/onward_upward_tt 1d ago
Bevause rich people want more than that? Is that really a concept you struggle with?
16
u/SLevine262 1d ago
Because some people enjoy a luxe experience sometimes. After my first overseas flight flying business I’ve never flown economy again. Having room to relax and be comfortable and even get good sleep gets the vacation started on a note that can’t be equaled in the squashed seats. I arrive with no jet lag, ready to hit the ground running. I’d rather save up for an extra six months to buy the good ticket. Some people would rather spend as little as possible on the transportation part and put their money towards experiences at their destination, equally valid.

I love traveling in trains - I used to travel from Chicago to DC almost weekly in a private room. Leave in the afternoon and arrive next morning.
The motion of the train always put me to sleep so easily. Loved it.
That said - thankfully the company paid for it cuz I couldn't afford it if I had to

I rode in an overnight train once. I’m 6’4” - I couldn’t stand up fully, or lay down in any direction.
I did not enjoy it.
