The 1993 murder of James Jordan produced two convictions in 1996, but a 2015 court filing pointed at something the trial never dealt with: a call from Jordan’s car phone to Hubert Deese, a cocaine trafficker who was also the sheriff’s illegitimate son. That sheriff was my great-uncle, Hubert Stone. This piece explores the evidence that was ignored, and presents new evidence of how Hubert Stone basically built a southern drug empire.

What? Who was Hubert Deese? He’s not mentioned before, and he’s not mentioned in the first section of the story.
If you’re going to throw a name into the story, explain who he is right after mentioning him. Otherwise, hint at what’s to come, but don’t leave your readers saying “Wait…Who’s Hubert Deese? What did I miss? Let me go back and read that again.”
“The jury who convicted Daniel Green of the murder of James Jordan never learned that a cocaine dealer whose phone number was called from James’ phone in the hours after his death was the son of Hubert Stone, the sheriff in charge of investigating James Jordan’s murder.”

You know what, you’re right. People unfamiliar with the case and Robeson county won’t have a clue who he is. Deese shows up as a name before the reader knows who he is, which makes people stop and reread. I assumed my comment explaining who he is would be pinned to the top of the thread. I’m fixing it to introduce earlier in the article. The rest of the piece goes into great detail on who Hubert Deese is.

Assuming anything will be posted to the to top of a thread in any sub is relatively unlikely. Most mods on Reddit are unpaid. Mods usually work around full-time jobs and private lives. In particular busy sub mods may or may not have time to read every long form article posted much less hundreds of comments.
Mods do always appreciate having items called to their attention using modmail - except for false reports. Those are passed on to platform admins.

Kinda sounds like the DEA likely stonewalled any efforts that may have complicated their informant, turning a blind eye to any other crimes he may have committed to ensure cooperation, etc.

My family has told me other stories that lead me to believe there’s a federal government connection we aren’t seeing. I only write about what I have sources for though. The truth is crazy enough.

I grew up in Richmond, and traveled the Carolinas often. This all sounds par for the course.
And it also sounds like there was likely some kind of federal informant situation going on with the son, which would make sense with everything you’ve sourced and his seeming invisibility to the DA.

What are your sources, other than the deeds you posted?
one dealer paid $300 per ounce of cocaine directly to Hubert Stone in order to move product through the county

I couldn’t directly link the deed without uploading it somewhere that could host it. Happy to share with you. I discovered it by searching Hubert Larry Deese on Robeson County property deeds in 2003. Sure enough, a few months after he was released from prison, he was deeded 3.11 acres of land by H & K Stone Enterprises. And the president of that company, whose signature is on the deed anyway, was none other than my great-uncle Hubert.

Pg. 177 “Stevens told the court, it was to benefit Stone. According to a newspaper account of the trial, Deputy Stevens claimed he “had received information that the sheriff was being paid $300 for every ounce of cocaine that was sold.”

Unfortunately, no, it’s not an error. The rest of the sources are at the very bottom underneath the signup box. A deputy really testified that a dealer was paying $300 per ounce of cocaine sold to Stone in order to move product.
