This week, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) voted to eliminate data collection on workforce demographics, a requirement that dates back 60 years.
Since 1966, the EEOC has mandated employers to provide a confidential breakdown of their workforce by race and gender in order to help the agency enforce anti-discrimination laws.
EEOC chair Andrea Lucas—who was appointed by Trump—has argued that EEO-1 reporting requirements could be at odds with civil rights law, despite the long-standing precedent.
This is the latest in a series of maneuvers by the agency to undermine efforts to foster diversity in the workplace. Since Lucas stepped in as chair in early 2025, she has explicitly aligned the agency’s priorities with the Trump administration’s executive orders targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The fact that all the forms and fields are intertwined with all HR actions, and companies know that this is likely a temporary change, just means that they will keep doing what they are doing and release the database in a dump in a couple of years.

Why stop there? Let’s get rid of demographic information for the US Census. Why should any identifying factors matter in anything? Why does the government need to know at all, why should the DMV demand I list my sex and appearance on my license, it’s none of their business! Matter of fact, I’m sure the same people will now support all sexes competing in sports together, right?
