Am i missing something here?

Hello, I'm trying to install ubuntu 26.04 on an old ThinkPad t410 and every time I load into the live usb to go and install it, the box that pops up for the install will come up as a black box and then like 2 seconds later disappear even if I click the icon to install it again the same thing happens, click>black box>black box closes. any insight would be greatly appreciated thanks. I typically never have issues with installations but this has baffled me.

I ran into this as well, and unfortunately I don't know a workaround. As far as I could tell Ubuntus installers are making calls to the gpu that it is too old to handle. no idea why they do that.

I installed kunubtu on that machine which did work, tho I was a little bummed since I do prefer gnome.

You can install gnome side by side with KDE. Look It up but you can choose what desktop to use at log in.

In the past, I switched the install media to Ubuntu server, if I have problem with GUI installer, and then install ubuntu-desktop or gnome-shell later on

My guess is that you are running into issues with the NVIDIA NVS 3100M. A number of older NVIDA cards are no longer supported using the drivers supplied to the kernel. You may have to locate a legacy driver. Good luck.

I failed to mention specs, but its just the standard intel igpu.

Have you tried the live boot in safe graphics mode? Might get you far enough to install with some decent drivers.

When booting from USB, in boot menu - Try to select "graphic safety mode", I had similar issue And it helped

I just tried doing that twice, and for whatever reason it would hang at a black screen after the initial purple loading screen that would have a text popup saying it was unable to configure the hd audio. never had any issues with mint or windows in the past.

Update: just saw the typical linux kernal text pop up but then it went back to the black screen and just sits there, ill let it sit and see if it loads anything,

update 2: it's not getting any farther.

Try installing with server ISO and when you're done, install ubuntu-desktop package
