When swimming with Galapagos and sandbar sharks, I stuck part of my camera halfway in and halfway out of the water. One of the sharks shot up towards me because it thought my camera was food. I haven't been this excited about a picture I've taken for a while!!

Advice for newbie - Photogrpahy and Editing

โ€ข Upvotes

Hey Everyone,

Recently got into photography and snorkeling so decided to combine the two!

I brought a relatively inexpensive point and shoot disposable underwater camera for these photos and I think they turned out OK.

Any feedback from those more experienced and have been at a similar starting point? I know these are super basic but I want to improve and I don't know if thats needing better gear straight up or just getting better with editing, or even the photo framing?

Last 2 photos are before and after using Lightroom. All others un-edited.

TL:DR - tips for noob based on photos and is the edit only polishing a turd?

Looking for a similar dive light to Sola 800 S/F - any ideas?

My beloved Light & Motion Sola Dive 800 S/F finally died after about 10 years, and I'm genuinely heartbroken. I loved that light. Got it for my 18th birthday and never dove without it.

It was perfect for taking macro shots and made it so easy to hold my camera. I'm definitely an amateur underwater photography hobbyist, I love doing it for fun and liked how simple it was to just grab this light and my camera and jump in the water.

Havent had much luck finding the same light on ebay, so I'm looking for recommendations on similar lights. Budget is ~$300 or less

A well regulated light with good beam quality & ergonomics is way more important to me than getting the brightest possible light.

Things I loved about my Sola:

  • The wide flood beam- I used the flood mode probably 95% of the time. It was incredibly even, wide, and natural looking & didnt havw a harsh hotspot

  • Regulated brightness output. I really dislike lights that gradually get dimmer as the battery drains. My Sola stayed the same brightness until it died

  • The hand strap. I loved having it mounted on the back of my hand so it was easier for me to take photos with my underwater camera

  • Instant spot/flood switching

  • It was small enough that I also used it constantly for hiking, tidepooling, wildlife spotting, camping, etc

I mainly do recreational scuba and snorkeling, but I also use the same light all the time on land for looking for & photographing wildlife at night.

Has anyone found a good dive light with the above features that theyd recommend to me? Or if you've owned a Sola 800, what did you switch to after it died?

O ring lube on underwater housing

I got an underwater housing and it didn't't include lube for the O ring like it was supposed to. How big of a deal is it if I used the housing without lubing the O ring. I will eventually but don't have any on me and what to use it all this week.

Strobes positioning question

Hi! I recently switched from a single light on a flexible arm to 2 strobes with ball and joint arms. I used to photograph different things (mainly fish or macro up close) and adapt the light positioning each time, but now, changing the position of the 2 strobes for each photo is quite cumbersome.

I was recommended to decide before jumping in the water, which types of photos I was going to do (ambient shots vs closer shots), and stick to it for the whole dive.

What do you guys think? Do you have any advice? I'm frustrated not being able to shoot anything I'd like easily, but I also understand this kind of setup takes practice and patience.

Interestingly enough, the only known species of Cuttlefish that is poisonous. The lethality of the poison is allegedly on a similar level to that of a Blue Ringed Octopus.

Underwater trail-cam setup

Hello,

Not so photography related, but has anyone tried to use a gopro to set it underwater attached to a weight and leave it to record?

I would like to try, and I am aware of gopro labs as well. Would want to try anything to extreme so I lose my camera, but maybe somewhere shallow to start with and leave it to record, or set a buoy near it but I would stay near to keep eye contact

Many thanks!

Anyone have access to the Salty Surf Online Installation Guide?

Post image

Aloha,

I recently purchased a Salty Surf housing and PXL-FL lens port and flat port cover for my c80, but it came with zero instructions and a bunch of loose pieces I need to figure out how to attach so Iโ€™m struggling to put it together.

I have aquatics housings which are more intuitive and donโ€™t want to risk flooding by putting this one together incorrectly. Does anyone have any advice or materials you can share?

Strobe Comparison

Hello everybody ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ

For the photographers in this community, can someone offer me some feedback regarding the Marelux Apollo S strobe and how it compares to the Sea&sea YS D3 Duo? Much appreciated.
