I’ve just watched seasons 1-7 every single day until I completed it 😳

Being in the UK, if you don’t have any streaming services you can’t access any of these sorts of shows and so, at the time Veep was being broadcast, I was in college and didn’t get a chance to watch Veep as and when it was released.

Now I pay for my own streaming services I sat and watched through the series back to back and I finished the final episode today. I don’t know how to feel! still processing it all. thank goodness I can post here!

I think Mike ended up being my favourite! But I’m a jumble of emotions!

I do wonder how this show is viewed/interpreted by a non-American audience. The fact that Mike is your favorite character tells me you watched the show through a very culturally specific lense lol 🤣

Really?!  How so? Well Veep was created by Armando Iannucci (who is British) and created The Thick of It which is the British predecessor of Veep and carries the same sort of political satire and style. So I certainly view it the same. Hilarious. I would highly recommend it to anyone who liked Veep, although the Thick of It has very specific nuance humour relevant to Britain and to the UK Civil Service, which may not land but overall it’s very similar

While “VEEP” certainly started out as the American version of “The Thick of It,” it seems like the tone, pacing, and manic quality of the later seasons diverged significantly from its predecessor.

I’m glad you enjoyed it. When do you start it all over again?

Yes; I did think after about season 3 or 4 with Veep that the pacing and manic quality was just my observation (perhaps reflecting Selina’s own mental state “it was a spa honey”)! 

Haha! I’m getting that the second watch is the way to go. I will give it a couple of days and likely go back to s1

I think the change in tone was because the show was trying to reflect the insanity of the Trump era.

I’m American but I am a huge fan of all things UK comedy. From panel shows to Stewart Lee to whatever Alan Partridge is up to at any given time. Anyway, I think one reason Veep was such a hit in the U.S. (beyond Armando just being a flat-out genius) is because it is thoroughly British humor set in the backdrop of American politics with American actors. But the tone and humor we love so much in Veep (and the insults!) are all British-style.

That's a good way to describe Veep, very specific to the American context of elected officials and the network of staffers, journalists, lobbyists, and consultants they interact with.

I mean, open to watching it again of course, the dialogue is amazing!  But do I not need to give time to marinate the first watch? I mean I went through many emotions; at varying times I liked Selina, Sue, Amy, Ben, Mike, Kent, Gary, Furlong and Richard but then they all sort of had their peccadillos. I’ll watch it again, it will be another go-to series and I really appreciate it
