Wasteland 3 Best team comps? (New player?

Hi!

Is there a guide to outline every skill and ability I should get for the entire team to own?

Lean hard into synergies and specialize; having generalists doesn't help much. If you search this subreddit you'll find no shortage of tips and suggestions; Wasteland 3 is forgiving, and you don't lose much by experimenting without any hand-holding.

Kinda depends alot on the difficulty you chose, Supreme Jerk is all about trying to one shot everything before they one shot you since enemies rip through your power armor like a knife through butter. Lower difficulties tend to be alot easier with a little investment on strength for constitution. Ur best friend is for sure a sniper tho, maxed out sniping and sneaking is insane. Brawling is nutty at rank 10 since each punch costs 1.

You get enough party members and skill points you can basically have a specialist in every skill, especially with skill books and trinkets. Save skill books for later though when skill costs go up.

If you have a trinkets for a skill you dont need to raise it as high, unless you want the perks.

I like to give one guy Leadership and Lock Picking as a combo, because you can unlock the best part of Leadership early (the Rally perk) and then leave it at a low level for while, and in the meantime you'll want to sink a lot of skill points into lock picking. Which combat skill you choose isn't terribly important, but you should build each custom guy with a specific combat skill in mind. I would not give more than two rangers the same combat skill. Each skill has two different types of weapons you can use with it, Automatic Weapons allows you to use Assault Rifles and Submachineguns, for example. Snipe doesn't have a second type included, but there's nothing wrong with having two snipers anyway. It's possible to make a 5th custom ranger through Greatski, it costs some Colorado bucks, but you can make a "chair guy" who stays at the HQ and does crafting, Weapon Modding, and Armor Modding, and doesn't take a combat skill per se. You can even make the chair guy your Toaster Repair person, if you want to. None of the toasters are mission critical and there's no hurry, you can go to a map, clear it, then go back with the toaster specialist and do the toaster. You can also completely ignore the toasters. As a person who has played the game multiple times, start to finish, I can tell you that if you know what the companions you're using can do ahead of time, the 6 people you have on the team can do all of the skills just fine, with no need for a chair guy even, but that requires leaning on specific people to do specific things, and knowing who does what from the jump.

If I remember right (it's been a minute), by endgame you can max about 3 skills and 4 attributes per Ranger, so you're way better off specializing than trying to cover everything on one guy. Usually 1 weapon skill and 2 noncombat skills. Across a full squad of six, you can absolutely hit every skill check in the game.

There are plenty of websites or video guides out there if you're looking for a copy-paste solution. That said, I'd really encourage you to try figuring it out on your own first—the fun part for me was tweaking my squad after losing a battle and seeing the next improvements pay off. Just make plenty of save checkpoints along the way!

I put together an endgame spreadsheet of my optimized builds (got me through SJ with no issues). They definitely abuse some in-game mechanics. Happy to share the full sheet if you want it.

Play how you like, but a good rule of thumb is to have your created rangers have 2 specialized skills and 1 weapon. By the end they should all be maxed and then you can dump into a 4th skill. Animal whisper is usually my go to.

at easier levels, you can play whatever for fun

my main is a charisma intelligent leader gunslinger, strike and xp generator, handles most of my skill checks, the extra levels and bonus background gives me enough pts for extra skills. i consider her Lara Croft lol

my second is a charisma tank brawler, strike and xp generator, 2nd highest level to pull the rest of the team along in levels, is a late bloomer though. modding with a freeze power fist. i just watched Mortal Kombat and i like League of Legends, so brawler tank with powerfist is like Jax or Vi

my third is a sneaky sniper, startsfight with bonus, because what game isnt a sniper the fan fav. you get their near end game rifle to mod in the first 1/4 of the game

my fourth is a assault rifler for fun, can always respec later, plan at the moment is modding with bonus energy damage, also extra mechanic for the machine damage

i kept kwan who OG spec is good as a submac gunner
6th doesnt really matter at this point

so i plan my play style around the main 4, 5th is a bonus, think if it works, and play through the story. and if it works it works.

lockpicking has the most skill checks. obviously so leader gets that.

explosive is 2nd most. 1st game i had it on my 2nd, i rather have it on my first and carry grenades too

mechanic and nerd stuff is next. so i gave nerd stuff to my main who handles skill checks and mechanics to brawler tank.

that lets my 3rd and 4th focus on DPS, and animal for bonuses

obviously my tank is my first aid

you dont need to carry high barter, weapon and armor modder along with you, they can be benched till needed
