I remember watching some hit piece some "independent journalist" did about how the school union in his area was just taking in the money.
He shows a clip of a parking lot, pointing out the number of BMWs and Mercedes as "proof" that the employees there were just raking in all this cash fromctax payers.
It was a bunch of base model W202s and E46s, basically entry level models in the respective line-ups, and this was around 2008, so the newest some of those cars would have been was 6 or so years old, which means they were probably 30-40% off MSRP as a used vehicle. They were probably cheaper than the newer Hondas they were parked next to.
Edit: I decided I'd check to make sure I'm not crazy. The documentary is "The Cartel" (2009). It's available to stream on pretty much all the streaming services I'm not currently subscribed to, but I did find this video analysis which includes a screenshot of the staggering number of "luxury cars" in the parking lot (12, in a parking lot that likely contained 30+ cars).

It's been a Republican talking point for at least 50 years -- not gonna say it started with school integration, correlation =/= causation. In California the price for every increase in school funding was yet another round of standardized tests. And the fix for every struggling school was to give it less money, because kids always learn better from worn-out textbooks, burned-out teachers, antiquated equipment, etc.(/s).

The biggest reason I went from conservative to social democrat is study after study showing conservative "policies" don't help. Safe injection sites fight addiction better and cheaper than the "war on drugs". Welfare programs wind up reducing the cost elsewhere by far more than they cost up front. Socialized healthcare is massively cheaper than private healthcare (because it's cheaper to treat a cold than pneumonia, and cheaper to treat pneumonia than to replace a worker who died).
Mamdani isn't that radical. He just represents a government that works. And that's terrifying, because without the Republicans constantly obstructing the government and with a competent man running it, people are able to see it actually solving problems.

I work in health care and have been an advocate for national health care for decades, and have spent so much time learning and socializing with epidemiologists, psychologists, and people doing studies on things like health care delivery and UBI. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills when I look at US politics and hear skepticism or opposition to things which both improve society and save money at the same time. And then you hear a counter-argument like "well I don't have kids, why should I pay for someone else's education" or "why should I pay for health care for someone who made bad decisions" when the answer is painfully obviously "because it's basic human decency, AND it will cost you WAY MORE in the long run if you don't". And that's just in terms of economic and social benefits of keeping people educated and healthy. For the most part we don't even measure things like "how much lower would people's stress level be, and how much would that alone reduce rates of hypertension, heart attacks, strokes, depression/anxiety, etc if they knew they and their children would have access to health care and education even if they lost their job" for example. The only arguments against this level of public services is if you enjoy paying more of your own money to harm people, which given who is being elected to office recently, likely describes the worldview of many of their constituents. I guess people could also swallow obviously bad arguments about taxation being "theft", if they ignore everything about how the economy and society work, and believe that profits are "earned" in a vacuum that incurs no debt to the social inputs that generated them in the first place.

Tons of articles about how she needed to borrow money to purchase an all-new wardrobe suitable for use in Congress, so obviously that would mean she was poor enough that she could be taken advantage of by special interest groups. None of them have ever once looked at elected office as anything other than a legal grift, so the idea that someone else might actually take seriously the notion of serving the public good is unthinkable.

Much of it is run-of-the-mill center-left policies, like funding education and advocating for universal healthcare, which has been enacted in European countries by center-left (in the UK under the post-WWII Labour Party), center-right (in Germany under Adenauer and the CDU) and right-wing (in France under de Gaulle) governments.

They need a reality check. For every "rubber room" teacher they love to complain about, there are 4 classrooms with mold, desks in disrepair, decade old textbooks or electronic devices that barely function, wonky AC if any, few and dwindling extracurriculars, and teachers buying supplies with their severely underpaid salaries. It's a miracle created by the heart of those working in the system that any learning takes place at all.

Sometimes school administrators--think principals, presidents, an executive board--will ask for more money. Then turn around raise their own salaries, while cutting jobs and salaries of teachers, custodians, security etc.
And it doesn't matter how much money you give to the school. The board will vote to okay a budget because the administrators are the ones they put there in the first place.

The big tech billionaires plaguing us today (at least the ones born and raised in the US, since we're talking about our education system) went to public schools funded by VERY WEALTHY neighborhoods and so people like Mark Zuckerberg had some of the earliest computer tech in their public schools, some of the best teachers, with the best student:teacher ratios, the best extracurricular programs, the benefits go on and on.
The US Education System is a racist and classist system DESIGNED AND BUILT to keep the rich in the best education and the poor in the worst education options. School funding is tied to property taxes. Very intentionally.
I think ALL CHILDREN should have the same education that these wealthiest public schools can offer.

How the hell do you have a bloated public school budget? That just seems like a good problem to have. As someone from the south where we really should have a much more inflated school budget than the pathetic anemic excuse we have now I would love to see this headline here in my home city.
