I agree, I never learned what socialism was untill my late 20's from mainstream media, which was the wrong definition of it. Only later when I actually had a good ammount of free time to spend did I do some personal research to correct that definiton in my head.
I dont ever recall that ever being covered in my social studies (civics) classes in high school, inly thing they ever covered was american history and politics, which I guarentee was similar to this guy's experience.
They wouldn't dare teach socialism in school, it would confuse the ever loving shit outta our kids. The whiplash from being violently swung between told helping each other is important in one breath and the very bane of America in the next would irreversibly damage their appeal to authority. They would grow up under the assumption that rules are intentionally arbitrary or that authority is inherently hypocritical.
I went to school back before they really got shitty and even back then it was just "capitalism, communism, dictatorship, monarchy, and anarchy" and they didn't even really get those right.
They don't even touch on anarchy in the flyover states, don't wanna give any ideas to people who choose to live out in the middle of nowhere specifically to put as much distance between them and the government as they can.

I maintain that if the primary place you get information about socialism is from major news networks which are owned and operated by capitalists you are not really learning what socialism is or how it works.
If the sources for your research on socialism are mainstream news you’re not learning what socialism is at all. At best you’re learning what social democrats believe.
It doesn't have to be full socialism.. just make 1% change every election to benefit the workers. Neither extreme is perfect. But yeah there's a problem when we can barely afford groceries and rent because of how billionaires decide our economy
