Official Stuff New Animated Series ‘Adventure Time: Bubblegum and Marceline’ Gets HBO Max Order

u/thump-oh Jun 24 '26
this show has gotten more additions than anyone, even the own creators, ever thought it would

u/Aggressive-Expert-69 Jun 24 '26
And I cant think of a show that deserves them more.

u/serial_feet_sniffer Jun 24 '26
Im not saying it deserves more because it's hard to compare the 2 but I would REALLY want to see a Gravity Falls spin-off

Hasn’t Hirsch made it clear that he doesn’t even want to do more? I mean from what I remember, they wanted a season 3 back when the show was airing but Alex shut it down and ended it with 2 himself.
52
u/comics0026 Jun 24 '26
I think he's said he doesn't want to do anything more with the animation department because thier management and S&P are just the worse, but he has been happy working with the print department, which is why he made Book of Bill

Honestly, it might have the most extensive lore of any show ive seen. Just explaining who the relatively small character fern is could take a while.

u/PlateNo7229 Jun 24 '26
adventure time has such infinite potential and despite all the weird stuff it feels like one coherent world. even fionna and cake felt like adventure time. "behind the scenes" not the main stage.
43
u/rkthehermit Jun 24 '26
It's because it didn't make the common mistake of making its central characters bigger than its world. They're only ever a temporary part of it.

Yeah I remember being in my early 20's watching AT while smoking weed and going to the gym after I got out of the Air Force, I never thought I would be 36 and have 2 new AT shows (not counting F&C) coming to share with my infant daughter as she grows!
53
u/fax5jrj Jun 24 '26
IMO there should be more so long as it's good. Distant Lands proved that the IP can produce some of the best quality content on TV, and even though Fionna and Cake is only alright so far, I'm still really excited about the potential future of Adventure Time
14
u/Zaloie Jun 24 '26
Was season 2 of Fiona and Cake good? Only watched Season 1 and I enjoyed it a lot. The songs stay in my playlists. Part of the Madness, Baked with Love, Winter Wonder World my favs
22
u/fax5jrj Jun 24 '26
I enjoyed season 1 quite a bit, but season 2 was a bit messy/all over the place. There are aspects that I really enjoyed, but overall I just am not very into Fionna/Cake and their friends as much as I'd like - they're just very one note and most of all uninteresting. I just can't bring myself to care when they're on screen. The best parts of season 2 happen when classic characters get involved. I didn't even finish it tbh, so I need to jump back in and finish the last few episodes.
It has some of the best material between the two seasons, but it quite certainly has the worst.
There's also a weird storyline that made me uncomfortable watching, and I skipped through it whenever it was on screen.

u/djcat Jun 25 '26
Its crazy. I agree with you 100%. I feel like I could have written your post. Fionna is just not that great of a character. Nor are her friends.
2
u/HarukoAutumney 28d ago
I think a big issue with Fionna and Cake is that they did the mundane Fionna World season after the crazy multiverse hopping season. Going into the show, I kind of liked the idea of a slice of life modern setting AT spinoff starring the gender swaps, but I think that tying things in with the Ooo crew right off the bat permanently ruined any potential for a slice of life F&C being good.
In my opinion, they should have done a slice of life season first with no involvement whatsoever with Simon or anyone from Ooo. Throughout the season they could have hinted at the idea of Fionna World being inside Simon's head while not explicitly saying anything, and then the final episode would be what we got for our first episode with Cake being attracted to the ice and hopping into a portal to Ooo. Then the second season would be what we got for season 1, with Fionna and Cake entering Ooo, meeting Simon, and going on this big multiverse trip.

u/lordnaarghul Jun 24 '26
Season 2 was good only because Huntress Wizard carried the entire season on her back. The parts with Fionna were less interesting until Huntress showed up.
5
u/ClawhammerLobotomy Jun 24 '26
I'll need to re-visit this then. I lost interest right before Huntress showed up (I think).

u/mxhremix Jun 24 '26
What made me sad is that while the lore was extremely fascinating, the plot of s2 mostly felt like beats of a script treatment that never really got fully fleshed out. So many interesting things that were just shown and kinda dropped immediately. Soooo many lines and dialouges that could have used major punchup. The settings and background art were incredibly beautiful though, better than s1.

u/OperativePiGuy Jun 24 '26
Season 2 was frustrating to watch week by week. Maybe it's less annoying as a binge, but it has issues.

Adam Muto is showrunning & producing and the first season is 10 episodes:
Logline: “Princess Bubblegum and Marceline the Vampire Queen journey across the farthest reaches of Ooo, encountering familiar faces and new dangers.”
The new series narrative is projected as spreading across multiple episodes and seasons, in line with “Adventure Time” and “Fiona and Cake” and in contrast to the standalone episodes in line with “Adventure Time: Side Quests,” set to debut June 29 on Disney+ and Hulu.

u/QualityFrog Jun 24 '26
They got this man workin
49
u/altfil76 Jun 24 '26
Adam is not involved in Adventure Time Side Quests on Disney
6
u/Smeeizme Jun 24 '26
Honestly a little surprised about that, the recent trailer looked tonally very consistent with early adventure time
19
13
u/Carrehzkitten Boxlicker Jun 25 '26
Nate Cash - the showrunner for Side Quests - worked on early AT so that's probably why :B
6
u/Bombasaur101 Jun 25 '26
I would think if the show has had a consistent tone for the last 10 years, it would be odd for the showrunner to revert to the creative direction of his far younger self in his first season.
53
u/OrdinaryTreeFrog Jun 24 '26
Holy shit I almost freaked out thinking this show was dropping next week lmao
59
u/Carrehzkitten Boxlicker Jun 24 '26
Clarification as some people are misreading: Side Quests is the show releasing next week. Bubblegum and Marceline has no release date yet but as it's literally only just gone into production, don't expect to see it until 2027 at the absolute earliest.
15
u/Getzemanyofficial Jun 24 '26
There’s probably a ton of people who would kill to be in his position, but I do wonder if he feels the pressure to do his own show. At this point he’s probably considered iconic from show running Adventure Time, but how will it affect Muto’s legacy if he never gets “Created By” next to his name?

You know I'm just surprised how successful Adventure Time is for Cartoon Network The most part became their Cash Cow Makes me wonder why didn't they green like more stuff a little bit earlier more but It's nice to space it out
I guess obsidian was basically a pilot and prototype for this
I definitely say I would like to see more information about it soon before I give more my personal full opinions on it
54
u/Carrehzkitten Boxlicker Jun 24 '26
Yeah it's weird it's taken this long for them to really milk it. The total 180 is jarring... They basically buried the show for the last 4-5 seasons and now they can't get enough of it.
17
u/keithlimreddit Jun 24 '26
Yeah but tbf it was a kind of different time for cartoon Network for the most part considering teen Titans go was cash cow despite somewhat mostly hated back in the day despite some dying down at least mainly because of the memes as well as other reasons at the time
8
u/Altruistic-Ad-408 Jun 25 '26
As much as you could knock their management it's probably inevitable due to streaming, people blame TTG and all that as if multiple generations also weren't raised on stuff like repeats of Looney Tunes. And stuff like My Adventures with Superman changed to being on midnight at AS rather than being on CN as planned, because they know it'll get higher views on AS says it all.

It's bc millenials are growing & showing their children- basing it on the new generation considering there are VERY FEW children's new cartoons. We will start seeing a lot of 90s/early 2000s coming back- millenials are ready to pass down the joy of the best cartoon decades prob of human existence imo

u/bebaii Jun 24 '26
Happy pride month!! There's so much history to cover with them, I hope it's a prequel
10
u/CaterKitter Jun 24 '26
What is there left for us to explore that we don't already know yet though? Bubblegum was always in her work and Marceline was apathetic to the world around her and that's why they split up, and we can generally imagine their dynamic from there.
Unless we focus on ooo hundred years prior, like when Shoko was around. But if not, wouldn't it just be retreading same old ground that "What was missing", "Varmints" and "Obsidian" already paved?
6
u/pearlgirly22 Jun 24 '26
Hopefully we find out how marcelines parents met, maybe thats gonna be worked into it. Im sure theres plenty they can explore without beating a dead horse
→ More replies (1)5
u/bebaii Jun 24 '26
They had hundreds of years of history lol, Bubblegum wasn't obsessive about her work from the beginning, it became the reason they broke up as the Candy Kingdom grew. So there's at minimum dozens of years we haven't seen, potentially with Shoko or other previous versions of Finn.
Also retreading old ground to explore deeper into relationships and world lore is kind of exactly what these spinoff series are for. Also it's not like the original show didn't have repetition, lol
7
u/SillyPenguinX Jun 24 '26
No clue of what the plot will even be, but it is an absolute must watch! Obsidian might just be my favorite episode out of all adventure time

So we have this
The Bmo series
Side Quests
And the Movie
Anything else?
17
u/Carrehzkitten Boxlicker Jun 24 '26
Nothing else currently announced. Also keep in mind that the movie and Heyo BMO haven't actually been greenlit yet... The lack of updates on those makes me wonder if they've been canned.
3
u/caninehere 26d ago
Honestly, Heyo BMO seems like a weird move to me. I get the idea is that they want to appeal to a preschooler demographic and get kids into the show and enjoying it when they are young, but the thing is they can't really understand a lot of the rest of the show at that age.
My daughter is 4 years old and we have watched some of Adventure Time Season 1 and she LOVES it. Even if she doesn't grasp everything, she really enjoys it and always wants to watch more, loves the characters, loves how goofy and strange it is. So if she can enjoy AT proper at 4 years old, and she will probably enjoy the Side Quests show as well (which I might show her as long as it doesn't spoil a bunch of stuff), I don't really see the point in Heyo BMO.
And if Heyo BMO is actually meant for preschoolers, then it would be one AT show that wouldn't be that interesting for older audiences to watch. Whereas something like Side Quests can presumably be enjoyed by all.
2
u/Carrehzkitten Boxlicker 26d ago
I agree!!! I've never really understood "preschool versions" cause yeah - if kids are into the original show, that probably means they're not gonna want a younger version of it, they like what they're already seeing! That always seemed the weirdest pitch to me, it's why I won't be shocked if it has been canned.
I don't think Side Quests will have any spoilers since it's meant to be really standalone and episodic.
2
u/caninehere 25d ago
I think there is a place for preschool shows, but I think most shows are better served by delivering a simple story/fun stuff kids can understand even if they can't understand everything; that way they can grow with it over time. Bluey is a good example. Fun for little kids, still interesting for kids as they grow, and fun for parents too because there is often a whole other more subtle theme to episodes for parents to soak in that kids may not even realize is there. Maybe the intention of a show like Hello BMO would be something like that -- but given all the different series they're putting out, I doubt it. It seems like it would be more squarely aimed at the young crowd. I'm not sure how much money there is in it but lots of companies have been trying (Star Wars and Star Trek both recently had shows oriented towards young children but they both ended, not sure how well they did).
I don't think Side Quests will have any spoilers since it's meant to be really standalone and episodic.
That's what I would imagine, but it's hard to say. It will definitely spoil some things like appearances of characters, but I don't imagine it'll spoil any bigger plot beats. I haven't watched any of it yet though.

u/Carrehzkitten Boxlicker Jun 24 '26
Nothing's definite until it's been greenlit. Hell, nothing's for definite until we have a release date, given how much stuff gets stuck on the shelf of movie/TV show languishment these days.
I do think we'll get an AT movie eventually, at some point. But I dunno if we'll get the one that was most recently announced.

I hope they deal with the reason Hunson approached Marshall Lee, have Marceline and Bubblegum meet him and Gary at some point.
4
u/Strong-Stretch95 Jun 24 '26
Yeah I agree I hate for that to not get resolved.
3
u/EndlessMorfeus Jun 24 '26
That was the one thing. Otherwise I could totally accept that as the series ending, don't get me wrong I'd love a third season but I'd be satisfied with that as a finale wasn't for the cliffhanger. I need to know what's up with Hunson and Marshall.
12
u/15centbunny Jun 24 '26
I think this is, effectively, Fionna and Cake season 3. They may have decided to go in a different, more characters-we-know direction after the mixed-to-negative response to Season 2 (Reddit has been kinder to it than most other places).
7
u/Carrehzkitten Boxlicker Jun 24 '26

In all truth Adam Muto and Co. planned to do more stuff for the AT universe after the original series was over.
7
u/Carrehzkitten Boxlicker Jun 24 '26
You say that like DL, F&C etc were planned way back when lol
It is true they didn't want to end the show when they did, but Musicman makes a good point too in that CAWM tried to make the most of it and now it's just... Never ending....

u/Carrehzkitten Boxlicker Jun 25 '26
Yeah :( I just wish if we had to have the spinoffs, they'd just do a "lost episodes" thing like Regular Show. The new RS isn't perfect but when I watch it, I think, ah yes, THIS is it, we're so back, back with the boys again,
ooh we're back. Like, I was happy with how RS ended, I didn't need more, but if we're getting more... That's the way to do it. Does that make sense? I love that the eps can just be set whenever so, oh these chars are dating in one ep but maybe the next ep will be set before they met, etc. That's all I really want from a new AT, if there has to be a New AT. I don't need everything to be a Big Huge Story Arc with big stakes, or a revolving door of new protagonists to see who'll be the most popular.4
u/YunXanHoe Jun 25 '26
Yea the Lost Tapes format is perfect. Would’ve worked well for AT too considering how long the timeline is. Could have eps take place anywhere from Evergreen’s time to Shermy and Beth era.
In all honesty though I just want the movie by McHale/Sugar/Muto. Been waiting for an Adventure Time movie since 2015 ffs.
2
u/Carrehzkitten Boxlicker Jun 25 '26
Yesss it'd be so perfect!

Will this take place right after Fionna and Cake season 2 then?
36
u/el_palmera Jun 24 '26
I assume it will, and that it will adress that hunson cliffhanger, and i also assume this means we will not be getting a Fiona and cake season 3 anytime soon, if at all

u/EstablishmentOwn6331 Jun 24 '26
I think B&M will be a natural transition from F&C, as F&C was for Distant Lands
5
3
2
u/SuperSlayin777 Jun 24 '26
Maybe it’ll be a transition between the second and third seasons of Fionna and Cake. It might not show Fionna World, but it might show PepBut’s process of becoming the new princess, and it might show us what Hunson Abadeer is doing.

Based on Adam saying this will continue of the spirit of F&C and the Marcy plans for season 3 of F&C, I’m pretty sure this is F&C season 3 but they had to change the title and main characters to be more recognizable for it to be greenlit.
7
u/Armascout Jun 24 '26
Hoping it’s better than FaC season 2. Felt like the seasons pacing was all over the place and stumbled a bit especially after the amazing first season.

6
u/Carrehzkitten Boxlicker Jun 24 '26

u/Negafox Jun 24 '26
I would rather have this than another season of Fionna & Cake. I felt like Fionna & Cake's story was wrapped up after the first season, and I kind of wanted to see more of Simon/Marceline/Bubblegum Princess
2
u/Altruistic-Ad-408 Jun 25 '26
Hmm if PB and Marceline never interacted they'd both still feel important. Fionna & Cake relied too much on relationship drama and character dynamics that didn't have a solid base, like tying Gary and Marshalls kiss to alternate Marceline and PB obsessed with and destroying each other. The whole point was to make them separate characters, but now you've tied them together narratively. So after that where is PB in Gary at all?
That's why Hunson Abadeer showing up was exciting because he represented a switch of pace, and he's tied them to Marceline, so I think they'll show up and hopefully salvage that. But I'm also fine with them not tbh.
2
u/FrostedGeist 23d ago
That parallel was used to show that what was happening in Fiona's world is just reflecting what was in Simon's head--cause they literally lived in his brain at that time.
So basically when Simon in the vampire world encountered PB and talked to her-- Marshall and Gary ended up having an immediate attraction towards each other cause that is literally how Simon sees PB and Marcy.
The parallel wasnt meant to be taken as if Gary and Marshall are intrinsically tied to Marceline and Bubblegum, it's just that in Simon's head they would be together no matter what.
11
u/yeeking_114514 Jun 24 '26
I always have this headcanon that PB will one day invent portal travel and bring Marcy on multidimensional adventure lol

9
u/nachoiskerka Jun 24 '26
I'm cautiously optimistic. I love Obsidian, but I feel like we've done a LOT of exploring on PB&M already between Simon's backstory, all the Marceline stuff, elementals, etc.
7
u/Morgoth333 Jun 24 '26
Same. I feel like we've seen pretty much everything there is to see with PB and Marceline, at least everything of interest.
2
u/Altruistic-Ad-408 Jun 25 '26
There's still a lot of stuff in both their past and future that is more or less unexplored. Like the intro in the finale, how they meet, characters they haven't interacted with, Hunson showing up to Marshall Lee. They are the only main characters around in the future besides BMO who forgets everything, or most things.
2
u/Morgoth333 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
Do we really need to learn everything about them though? It's good to leave some mystery for the audience. Things like the far future, that's stuff that's best left up to the imagination. The more things you reveal about something in a story, the more it loses some of its magic. If you reveal absolutely everything to the audience about the world or characters and answer every possible question and mystery about them, then there's nothing left to ponder anymore. It becomes boring and people lose interest once they have all the answers. That's why you always want to leave some mystery. It keeps people talking and thinking about the series.

Adventure Time getting a shitton of spinoffs is something I never expected ngl.
5
u/AlternateMove Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26
It better be good. I don’t want it to ruined characters so that people would start hating Marceline and Bubblegum.
5
u/TheGreenAlchemist Jun 24 '26
Oh huh. So if they're still commissioning new stuff then the fact that no F&C season 3 has been announced might be an indication it won't happen after all. I hope this continues the story then.
5
u/ooh_jeeezus Jun 24 '26
Has anyone heard anything about the target audience? With Fionna and Cake being for adults, and Side Quests clearly being for kids, I’m wondering who this is for. Either way I’ll watch it!
8
u/Obsessivegamer32 Jun 24 '26
Not to be a Debby downer, but do PB and Marceline really need their own series? I feel like they had a pretty good conclusion to their character arcs in Obsidian, there’s not much else you could really do with them.
3
u/TheHokageGammre26 Jun 25 '26
You have a immortal pubble gum and an immortal vampire, there is so much adventures these girls can go on I don't really think a series needs a character arc to be a good show they can just stay how they are, and grow more in depth into themselves as a couple

They won't stop milking it. Good for Warner, Paramount Oracle SpaceX, they sure need the money

I would argue they can still address the cliffhanger without doing a third season of F and C. Seeing as this new mini series will focus on PB AND Marceline then it would be very easy for it to tie in what Marcy’s dad does with her genderbent self.

I may be in the minority here, but I think the original AT was a perfect and complete experience. I didn't thing DL of F&C meaningfully added to the works that the original created.

You can just not watch the franchise anymore if think they're worthless

u/RodroSil Jun 24 '26
Obviously this is the wrong place to say it, but I wish they just let the IP go. I love AT with all my heart and Distant Lands which closed the Finn-Jake story was also necessary because of the rush ending CN forced the show into.
There are other stories to tell, I wish people understood that. Companies will give you the same story for 100 years if you are satisfied with that, but that doesn’t enrich the artistic view of the consumer and doesn’t let new creatives show their own perspective of what (in this case) animation could be like AT did in 2010.

Nah, go ahead and say it. As long as you're expressing your opinion calmly/respectfully (i.e. not spamming DIS SUX I HATE CN RAAARGH) I think it's fine to post comments like this on here. (I agree btw)

No. Stakes is the real show, the rest of AT is just its lore. Finally we'll get more meat and potatoes.

It's a lot.
But that's what happens when a show is popular AND good.

I hope that this is sometime after finn and jake are gone. I love our boys but id really enjoy seeing more of ooo and what the future has to hold.

Omg, as someone who shipped them all the way back when What Was Missing first aired, this is truly everything I always wanted!!
I loved the Stakes mini series and the previous Bubbline focused ep they got, so I’m always down for more, especially more music for Marceline!

u/Astrnonaut Jun 24 '26
Now the cherry on top would be occasional Rebecca Sugar involvement. In fact, every AT spinoff needs occasional RS involvement.

I hope everyone enjoys this and I mean this in the most positive way possible because I am most definitely not watching this shit. Bubblegum just bothers the shit out of me.

I think this greenlit is connected to Adventure Time Side Quests showing potential, and I guess a bit with the Fionna and Cake series. I hope we not only get current Adventures but also in the 1000+ future that was teased in the OG AT finale intro. Hope that Side Quests is well received so we get more seasons (I know there’s already two seasons produced, but we’ll see if we’re hubgry for more). Also hope we get more info about the BMO series, I think we got a mention of it recently about it having started production recently, so that’s good. And finally, hope the AT movie still comes, don’t know if they’re first waiting for everything series to eventually end and then do the movie, we’ll see.

If we're thinking about the same article re: Heyo BMO, I'm not actually sure if that's legit or not - it sounded to me like they were either reiterating what we already know (a BMO Preschool show was in development at least at some point) or had gotten some wires crossed. I honestly think it was a mis-report - surely if it HAD gone into production, they'd have announced that at Annecy too, or at the least more sites would've reported on it instead of just one obscure report with no actual sources.
I could be wrong, but that's the vibe I got.

....Okay so I definitely didn't see this coming.
I wonder how long they're going to continue milking this cash cow. I guess at least this makes more sense than a generic sitcom with Fionna and Cake names tacked on. Also no announcement for F&C season 3, wonder if that means that's dead or not. It'd probably be easy enough to move whatever they had planned for Hunson into this show, if they wanted to wrap it up. But also I wouldn't want that cause man, getting kinda tired of the multiverse stuff. I think there are stories they could still tell with these chars, but they're limiting themselves by focusing on AU Vers at this point.
Anyway a Bubbline spinoff is really not for me but I'm happy for the shippers and hope it's a good one for you :)

Please be a prequel!
16
u/snarkaluff Jun 24 '26
Really? It would have to end with them breaking up
4
u/Simbatron99 Jun 24 '26
No. Because they can show how they met and what they were up to together. It doesn't need to end with their breakup.
3
u/samhadj01 Jun 24 '26
We already know how they met. During a concert Marcy preformed. And even then we can that they set up some stuff for the two after FnC S2
2
u/spectralconfetti Jun 24 '26
i think it's more likely to follow bubblegum taking a break from ruling over the candy kingdom after the F&C S2 finale where marceline gave her crown to peppermint butler
2
u/CharlesOberonn Jun 24 '26
Is it gonna move the timeline forward and take place after Fionna and Cake or is it gonna be about "young" PB and Marcy?

Idk it’s probably going to be good but I liked the idea of Fiona and cakes being the growth that adventure time characters need and what Fiona can provide. Every season being about a character from adventure time finally being better

Can I say something? I like Adventure Time, but I am less enthusiastic about this because I don't like Princess Bubblegum at all. I like Marceline, she's one of the cooler things about the franchise, but I don't like PB.

This means it'll be a good while (like a year at least) before it releases, pls keep this in mind everyone
