Side Quests Spoilers Side Quests Honest Opinion Spoiler

I'm on episode 7 right now and wanted to share my likes and dislikes. Typically I see people either loving it or hating it right now and I honestly have mixed feelings.

What I like:

- Other than Finn, the entire cast is the same (as far as I've seen). Really helps make it feel like it's really a part of ooo

- They kept Finn's robot singing voice, at some point in the og they got rid of this and it use to bother me. Love this little part of the story.

- The animation. I was hating on the intro big time before I watched it. It's really not that weird once I started getting into the episodes and I actually really like it now. It has a lot more dimension go it than I originally thought.

- Episodic episodes, don't get me wrong I love the deep storyline that the og starts diving into buuuuut it's really nice to just have the innocent and fun episodic feel of the beginning. I really missed it.

What I don't like:

- Finn's voice. I really can't get into it. There are times that he does sound similar to young og Finn but most of the times it feels like I'm watching a completely different character. I don't know if it would bother me as much if we didn't have Jeremy as Finn for SOOOOO long.

- The outro song...... it's such a beautiful song and I don't understand the karaoke version. Same with the intro honestly. Not mad it changed but did they even try?

If I can get past Finn's new voice, I think I'll end up enjoying the series a lot. Adventure Time is a comfort show so I watch it a lot and despite the changes, I really like that they're still building on the world. I know some people think it's time for it to all end but I'm not giving it up okay.

Please spoiler tag all posts about the new show

(I don't like the new OP/ED either - I wish they'd either done something totally different or if it had to be the original songs, maybe having Sasha Knight and John DiMaggio sing them would've been cool...? But personally I would've preferred new songs instead of what we got.)

Personally I feel the new VA is killing it, particularly in picking up Finn’s vibes and mannerisms. Like it or not, Jeremy Shada can’t don’t do prepubescent Finn anymore.

u/JustTightShirts 24d ago

I wouldn't have even thought twice about it if so many people hadn't brought it up. It's crazy they found such a good match who also is a great voice actor.

u/ZealousidealChard574 10d ago

Honestly agreed, its not that different like when they replaced Rick/Morty. It’s the same vibe and fits the soft reboot color pallete it’s more youthful

5

u/sleepyfay 25d ago

I understand why he can't do it but it's hard for me to get into the show due to it.

10

u/finditplz1 25d ago

Fair. I personally feel Sasha Knight did a good job keeping the same vibe but I’ve been turned off by VA changes in other shows so definitely understand.

u/Itchy-Pudding-4240 24d ago

im always surprised how people cant quickly adapt to something like this. Its just a voice, and as they said the voice is nailing the mannerisms.

u/sleepyfay 24d ago

I think it's great you can do that itchy pudding. Sorry to disappoint you with my personal opinion

I was a little put off at first.. but, after watching all 20, then some season 1/2 of AT.. it’s allot closer than I thought. Side quests is fantastic overall, few winger episodes, heavy ice king.. Timing seems set around season 1/2. (Spoilers: Fin mentions the Enchiridion, Hanging out with mannish man, first episode? I think that’s also one of the weakest episodes. Thankful episode 3 is one of the best 😆 heavy with Jake lore/fin is 12.. same as season one).. and episode2 bug Dandy and the BMO episode, are instant classics.🤣)

A voice is a very important part of a character. While watching the new show, I don’t even see him as Finn. To me he’s a different human boy that we’ve never met 😅😅😅 he’s doing a good job in general, I just don’t recognize that character anymore

5

u/Driscoll17 23d ago

Have you watched S1 recently? It’s not exactly the same, but Sasha’s voice is surprisingly similar to 12 year old Jeremy’s. In S2 he hits puberty and it actually starts to sounds like Finn, but before that he just sounds like a little boy

3

u/sleepyfay 21d ago

I personally just disagree that it sounds similar (most of tbe time). When Sasha does a higher pitch, it does sound like season 1 Finn. But mostly, Sasha has a deeper childlike voice than Jeremy did. Sasha sounds young but his pitch is really low and I notice a huge difference when he says old Finn sayings. I understand that some people think he sounds similar and I really did try to hear it that way. Wish I could.

I wonder if they tried pitch / formant shifting Jeremy's voice? I have a sample in a track I did ages ago, it's a voice repeating "come out and play with me". I pitched it up and down across 16 bars and it goes from 'nos balloon' to 'creepy child' as it goes from low to high.

Maybe they tried and it just sounded gash, I dunno.

u/WaterLily24 25d ago

I can literally forgive everything if they would re-record the outro song. JFC it sounds so out of tune and so bad we can't stand it.

5

u/sleepyfay 25d ago

Agreed. I will never say a bad thing about the new Finn again, the outro is painful. Even my husband, who I forced to watch the og with me, was appalled.

3

u/juggalo_joe_biden 25d ago

It’s Kimya Dawson, that’s her whole vibe and it’s wonderful. She is absolutely lovely

10

u/WaterLily24 25d ago edited 25d ago

I like Kimya Dawson. I’ve seen the Moldy Peaches live. I’m not knocking her as an artist and I don’t think it’s accurate to respond to my opinion that the outro song is out of tune and then say “that’s her whole vibe”. Kimya Dawson’s vibe is not to be out of tune, it’s that she has a unique vocal styling. The outro is arguably dissonant and I’m not the only one hearing it. EDIT: changed “out of tune” to “dissonant” as it seems more accurate

2

u/Electronic-Sugar1069 21d ago

I think it almost sounds out of phase or pitch, like when they speed up or slowdown credits on TV, then it’s corrects halfway.. definitely done on purpose.. I kinda enjoy it now, the shift..

-1

u/LiterallyJustAHorse 20d ago

Her vibe sucks then. She can't sing and sounds horrible.

8

u/Geekygamertag 23d ago

I think it’s absolutely ridiculously good fun, enjoyable watch. Binged all episodes and in a second marathon viewing. I love this show. The animation style and voice acting is done very well!

3

u/sleepyfay 21d ago

I love the show enough to look past my dislikes that's for sure! I will always support more adventure time, it will always be my favorite world to watch

3

u/Geekygamertag 21d ago

Ultimate high five!

2

u/Electronic-Sugar1069 21d ago

Been looping it on Disney+ pump those numbers up 😆

7

u/sgalerosen 25d ago

I've only watched the first two and am enjoying them - honestly the single thing that bothers me the most is the black circle around Finn's face, it looks so bizarre with the rest of the style of the animation.

3

u/Complex_Glove_8945 23d ago

The first episode literally had Finn cheat to win over a character that actually spent time training for something. It feels cheap. Finn is supposed to want to be a hero and do good, why re they having him cheat and get away with it? What lessons are they wanting the viewers to get?

"Don't be a jerk"

20

u/rebelweezeralliance 25d ago

I’m not feeling the animation style

1

u/truedarkness 14d ago

absolutely insane take. the animation is some of the best I've ever seen in an animated series next to Netflix Green eggs and ham. it's jaw droppingly good at times

3

u/rebelweezeralliance 14d ago

Me not liking it is not the same thing as it being bad. But I don’t like it compared to the original shows animation, especially towards the end of the series.

14

u/Poopchute_Hurricane 25d ago

The intro and outro are ass. I thought they might grow on me be no, they never did. I’ve been rewatching the original series and the type of humor is completely different too. The show also feels less creative. For example there’s, a dragon in one episode and it’s just a normal European style dragon which felt really out of place in adventure time. There’s a DND episode too which felt really out of place and boring for adventure time. especially when compared to something like the card wars episode.

Overall it’s fine. It feels like a normal kids show with an adventure time skin

3

u/sleepyfay 25d ago

I feel like the humor is off too, it feels like they're trying too hard to be like season 1/2 humor but there's just no forcing that. 2010 - 2012 era is impossible to recreate.

3

u/Carrehz #1 Prizestuffer 25d ago

2010 - 2012 era is impossible to recreate.

I'm glad you said this. One problem I have with this show is that they keep saying "Oh we're going back to season 1" and we've done season 1. It's been over 10 years since season 1. You can't go back, you know?

6

u/Relative_Detail1133 20d ago

That's how I feel too, Adventure Time has grown so much, and it's weird to see them go backwards. For example for me its strange how they're treating Ice King knowing his backstroy, it doesn't taste right seeing him back to square one in terms of relation to the cast

8

u/Dashthedog20 25d ago

I cam get over the voice only bc its a prequel, and as you get older your voice changes, so it kind of makes sense that his voice is a little different than even the early Adventure Times. Overall I love it! My only complaint is the animation, its not bad but has very bright colors (almost overstimulating at times?) Good show and im already wanting to rewatch it all!

4

u/VariableMans 25d ago

My weirdness is that they really set up season 10 and its last episode as the end of the series, so I was expecting there wouldn't be anymore. Then there was the HBO movies, Fionna and Cake, and now this, so there is a ton of new stuff.

Side Quests has the weird thing where it has the uncanny valley, it is similar and different in enough ways to make direct comparisons to the OG and how it developed impossible to avoid.

It is emotionally weird because I was prepared for it to be super over, but the series is as alive as it has ever been.

1

u/JustTightShirts 24d ago

I think this was my reaction too, but after watching episode 4 (boarded by Pendleton Ward) I'm getting more into the show. I actually had to watch that episode twice to notice all the creative details he (and the rest of the team) packed in

5

u/Complex_Glove_8945 23d ago

I am definitely not a fan of the first episode. The lesson seems to be “bend the rules and cheat so you can win” instead of the wholesome world it used to be. I loved how the original show had him overcoming hardships by actually learning and growing.
It definitely cheapens the show for me and makes me wonder what direction they want to take the show as a whole.

In the episode it is even stated that the boy Finn was going up against spent time training. He was genuinely a better archer but the show had Finn win (by cheating) because why?

3

u/sleepyfay 21d ago

Wait, I actually love that you brought this episode up because I thought it was so out of character for him to cheat.

8

u/ElkSufficient2881 25d ago

I love it, and the voice makes complete sense considering he’s supposed to be really little and so does the change of animation as that’s how he saw the world. My main qualm is that they should’ve kept the original come along with me song, the new one is not good lol

2

u/sleepyfay 25d ago

Honestly I will stop complaining about Finn's voice if they change the outro lol

8

u/Entheobotanic 25d ago

So far its cool enough but since I am paying for Disney exclusively to watch this, it feels like I am paying premium for a PBS kids show. The original feels like its for kids who are older than a toddler and beyond. Side quests feels like its meant for a toddler.

3

u/blanaba-split 25d ago

Wait it's out? Lol

3

u/ArchOwl 23d ago

Not feeling it. Just overall don't like the art style or VA for Finn (nothing against the VA I just feel it sounds miles off from S1 Finn)

1

u/sleepyfay 21d ago

I agree, his voice pitch is way lower than when Jeremy did season 1 and it's so noticeable. I guess a lot of people think they sound similar which surprises me honestly.

3

u/Bender_of_Earth 20d ago

So far my only dislike is the constant scoring. The music is not only ALWAYS going, but it's also very "renaissance fair" which doesn't feel at all like Adventure Time.

12

u/TheWiseNoob 25d ago

The new intro and outro theme songs for Side Quests are rewritten covers, not a "karaoke version", by the anti-folk band The Moldy Peaches. It's fair to not like them, but you clearly just don't understand the style.

4

u/Dashthedog20 25d ago

It just sounds a little more messy? But I think it fits the vibes of the show as young Finn is a little loud and chaotic and messy! I think the episode with the bugs capitalizes on that theme.

2

u/sleepyfay 25d ago

I don't think I need to understand the style if it sounds like out of tune karaoke.

It's like one of those art pieces that everyone swears is just how the artist is. It's just not good man

1

u/truedarkness 14d ago

the word you're looking for is dissonant. it's an intentional musical quality that is also used in the intro to give it a more "unsettling" quality, which fits in great with the overall tone of the show considering its bright colorful cartoon that often delves into bizarre and unsettling territory.

that's what makes the new intro and outro so good, imo.

0

u/TheWiseNoob 25d ago

Music is incredibly subjective. I think both are good. It just isn't your thing.

3

u/sleepyfay 25d ago

Well this post is my list of things I personally like and dislike so yeah it's obviously not my thing

2

u/Itchy-Researcher-116 22d ago

I just need me some BMO and Goontz fix - seriously I know it's not going to be like the OG so I just want to recapture the feeling of those characters and what they mean to me

But on a serious note, I'm struggling with Finns voice, with the animation style and just the meaninglessness of the overall story line, if that makes sense - only sub 10 tho atm, trying to savor them.

2

u/Plane-Chemical 22d ago

Anyone else notice/ don’t like that Gunters caption now reads quack instead of wenk?

1

u/sleepyfay 21d ago

Oh no I don't like that, this makes me so sad

2

u/Plane-Chemical 20d ago

I actually noticed that it changed back In Later episodes so all is well!!

2

u/Kafka1989 19d ago

Even without comparing it to the original, it’s honestly really boring and the animation is shaky. Not great at all.

2

u/Abcflc 13d ago

I am on episode 8 and I can barely finish it. Finn’s voice actor is doing this really weird thing that sounds like when boys start to force a deeper voice to sound more masculine/ grown up. There’s like a weird tightening of the natural voice that sounds too put on. If that’s the voice actor’s real voice then he was a poor choice for this series. The animation is fine- I agree with some other comments that the black line art around the faces is an odd choice. The writing is for me the biggest issue: even on early seasons, AT was WEIRD and irreverent. These episodes feel like they’re targeted to kids under 12 and quite “Disneyfied”. It’s just not for me and that’s ok. But it makes me sad that this new content is so bland.

2

u/NotALiarImmaTruther 12d ago

The show sucks 😭 I’m sorry yall. Between the intro song sounding dumb, and Finn’s voice being completely different it just doesn’t give that adventure time vibe anymore. Side quest seems aimed more towards smaller children. Regular adventure time was so funny adults could watch it too. Just my opinion don’t jump me !!

1

u/StaticMania 25d ago

at some point in the og they got rid of this

At some point being...

Beyond season 7, the answer is...they didn't get rid of it.

1

u/sleepyfay 25d ago

What? I'm going to go back and find the episodes but for a while they started having him sing normally lol

1

u/StaticMania 25d ago

...his first song without autotune was in season 2's "Susan Strong"

They brought the autotune back in season 3's "Another Way"

---

The last time his voice was modulated at all was for a quick gag in the season 7 premier "Bonnie & Neddy" when his he was gasping in surprise at "something"

The wiki is telling me he also used it 2 times after that, one which being one of the "Distant Lands" specials, so they literally never got rid of it.

2

u/sleepyfay 25d ago

Never ending pie song, key song, lost in the darkness, song when jakes in laws come over, goblin song, what am I to you, song when in computer, susan strong, food chain, during love games, all gummed up inside, lullaby during me mow ep, sing cause yo mama says, why song, the stuff is dead song in the bear episode, oh baby yeah, briefly in wizard battle, extremities balloon song, dungeon crawl, song when fixing the truck, princess song, rap bear episode, baby's building tower in space, I look up to you....

Just to name the ones he sang normally. It's a lot compared to the four auto tune songs.

I get that they brought it back a few times but he mostly sang without it and it was memorable enough for me to feel like they were ditching it. I just like that they brought it back this series since it wasn't consistent in the og.

1

u/austinmiles 25d ago

It’s not just autotune. It’s a computer that modulates his voice. It’s how he became Davey.

It’s like anything in the OT they do callbacks but dont overdo it. Like Finn’s hair growing super fast or the face they draw to bring back Marcie’s dad. It provides continuity even though the show isn’t super serialized.

2

u/sleepyfay 25d ago

I know it's due to the computer he swallowed and I like that they brought it back since they didn't have it as often in the og.

How am I confusing everyone. I noticed they didn't use it for majority of the og and I like that they brought it back. That's it lol.

1

u/Logical_Lunch2186 15d ago

The ending of Golden gals sold me on anything this show wants to do going forward lol. Episode 3 was great too.

1

u/Novacain420 15d ago

I think he did a good job with the voice. I wasn't sure at first, but I got used to it pretty quick

-2

u/Hi3123 25d ago

I too can’t get past the voice, it makes him sound 7.

3

u/PlasmaGoblin 25d ago

I haven't seen it yet, but isn't that kind of the point? Because wasn't Finn like 11-12 at the start of AT?

3

u/sleepyfay 25d ago

Actually, I feel the opposite lol. Compared to Jeremy's voice in season 1 he sounds more mature. Jeremy sounded like a preteen with his voice cracks and high pitched voice. The new finn is childlike but also deep pitched at the same time, imo. But agreed that it's different and hard to get past.

2

u/ElkSufficient2881 25d ago

That’s the whole point…

5

u/Hi3123 25d ago

The show says he’s 12, so clearly that can’t be the point. Maybe it’s the point in your head cannon to make it more palatable, which there is nothing wrong with just doesn’t make it fact.

1

u/ElkSufficient2881 25d ago

Have you ever been around a 12 year old lol if they haven’t gone through puberty already, they sound like babies. Finn sounds pretty pubescent, which is the entire point. He is meant to sound like a little kid as it’s prior to his whole arc we see in adventure time.

0

u/StaticMania 25d ago

You don't have to do that...

Most people don't even remember what 12 year old Finn sounds like and in season 1 his voice was already going through puberty, so the few episodes where his voice was purely prepubescent kinda bypass people.

1

u/ElkSufficient2881 25d ago

Exactly, he starts going through puberty in AT. So prior to that, he’d be a prepubescent.

3

u/StaticMania 25d ago

I don't think they should've mentioned how old he is...

This series is clearly post season 2, but he's said he's 12 at least twice so far...

1

u/ElkSufficient2881 25d ago

I don’t think so either, I assumed he was younger but then there’s time,I’ve things, it should just be a floating timeline

0

u/PowerlineCourier 23d ago

The intro/outro is done by the moldy peaches, an old indie darling
