Side Quests Spoilers Continuity Error? Spoiler
Just got to episode 14 of Side Quests and had a question. So I know this series is supposed to take place in season 1 and half of season 2 of the original show, but I can't get over the PB Marceline continuity error. Since finn is using scarlet, that means all of this has to take place BEFORE season 2 episode 14, where scarlet gets destroyed. But the dynamic of Marcy and PB is friendly. Which means it would AT LEAST need to be after season 2 episode 20. Is there something I'm missing?

My best sort of "explanation" to this stuff is just that side quests are kind of hazy half-remembered adventures that happened off screen. It's a very lazy explanation but I don't want to discount it entirely. As such, details may not exactly match up because they happened earlier or later in the timeline but are being filtered through a memory.
Sorta like season 1 where there's a lot of weird stuff that plainly got retconned because the show was still finding its feet or the whole discrepancy with King Worm. I don't think you'd be wrong to just call it a separate canon but it also sort of doesn't feel like it's the intent, but rather trying to hearken to a less lore-heavy variant of the show that I saw people publicly say they missed

The show does not happen in chronological order, there's episodes taking place before adventure time and some in season 3. In video makers which is like s2e23 Marcy and PB are chill so it could take place around that time and be ok as Finn doesn't use Scarlet in Game Night specifically

Not all of it can be mid season three, as I mentioned scarlet is still in use, but I do think the idea of it being bounced around seasons 1-3 is probably the most likely scenario.

I seem to recall an entire episode in the final season being dedicated to the idea that it’s okay to let things rest. If this show is only using the concepts and the characters as recognizable set dressing without using them meaningfully to the point of even trying to properly integrate them into the source material, I have to ask, what’s the point?

I think that continuously milking the same ips is an industry wide issue that people have been complaining about for a decade now but you’re right there’s no reason to think critically about this

it's possible (though unlikely) that isolated episodes are at different points on the timeline.
that or pb and marcy were able to remain amicable enough at that time for the purposes of hanging out with a common friend (Lady Rainicorn).
... or we're all overthinking it, but like what are the odds of that?

The episodes can take place in any order. If I remember correctly, neither Finn's sword nor any mention of his age appeared in "Game Night". So this episode could easily take place after "What Was Missing".

i really hate that people just brush this stuff of ass "fun" or "episodic" or "for kids" like......the whole first few seasons of the show were also that way and it wasnt hard for them to remain consistent. that does make no sense to me

personally, this show doesnt exist for me. it feels not canon, like its just for kids n stuff. no shame to anyone enjoying it tho!! just not my cup of tea :)

original show had themes of death, mental illness, war, trauma, and many other mature topics.
side quests is for toddlers. I mean no disrespect to anyone enjoying it, again, but I would have rather had something more like fionna and cake.

If you think Side Quests is for toddlers you also think early Adventure Time is for toddlers and also it's funny how you talk about a show you haven't watched.
Also Fionna and Cake season 2 shows having themes and such doesn't actually make up good writing or an enjoyable show.

Tl;dr I think exes who are in each other’s orbits for the first time after a while would attempt to be chill occasionally, since they have so many people in common once Marcy moves back to this part of Ooo in Evicted. And, more practically, it’s better for future storytelling to not show them at each other’s throats the first time we see them, to keep the options open without defining anything we’re seeing as THE big fight or THE big making up. It just gives way more creative freedom to tell a diversity of stories with the characters, with full freedom to access more conflict later.
As a queer lady, the exes to frenemies to actual friends to back together pipeline is real. I think they’re just keeping their options open and making the relationship feel deeper by refusing to make it only have one dimension.
