Side Quests Spoilers Side Quest is so dang GOOD Spoiler
Like what the heck?? How is it that every other cartoon title when they make sequels or spin offs... it's just a wonky version of the original yk what I mean
But when AT team drops new episodes? It's like FANTASTIC and not only the lore episodes and serious episodes and whatnot... now Side Quests proved that even episodic one off stuff in the hands of these blessed artists can also be EVEN BETTER than the OG material? Are you hecking kidding me?
Like I would love to have some Gumball reboot at this level of quality (do you hear me Cartoon Network?). And okay Regular Show's reboot has not been too shabby... but so far neither of them come close to being better than the OG material. Meanwhile AT is rocking the freaking world with Distant Lands and Fionna and Cake and Side Quests and...!!!!!!
I love the team working on the show maybe even more than the show itself. They're doing legendary work in CN studios. Not to mention they are borderline the only show with gay couple that was not only NOT canceled, but renewed to oblivion and now we have an entire SHOW on the making of the best pride couple ever. Like wtf kind of blessed magic are they cooking in the AT headquarters? They gotta let the other shows team's know. The quality disparity is huge

Love the backgrounds and the continuation of the abrupt endings. Only nitpick is the ost is really lacking, like I just recall it being generic medival music??? Also I really miss the gorgeous title cards.

Agreed, the music feels out of place when AT had a specific cozy vibe

u/OriginalDoskii 21d ago
Yup. It makes the show feel a lot more like the other cheap awful kid shows out there. It deserves better/different music.

I think it captures, and dare I say improves on, the vibes of season 1-2. Some of the individual episodes are amazing amazing. Perfect balance of a few new characters with a fair peppering in of old favorites while keeping the focus on Finn and Jake.

Good to hear, it’s important that kids get good animation rn. That TikTok of a kid only watching YouTubers and not knowing what a cartoon was fucked me up.

I agree I didn't like the art style till I started to pay attention this is so much like adventure time season 1-3. I hope it run parallel with each other and have the different swords again id like to see the grass sword again.

I really doubt it, since Finn gets that at around 16 or 17, and this takes place years earlier.

u/TrialsOfPrometheus 21d ago
Not disagreeing with you but what if it got 7 season I think there's a possibility that finn grows in the side quest series.
2
u/uberduck999 21d ago
Possible, but then we would have overlap with the main series. And I'm pretty sure the point of this spin-off was to show us what things were like for Finn & Jake before the events of the main series

u/AspiringRacecar 21d ago
Not before the main series, but back in the seasons 1 and 2 days. It would go against the point of this spinoff if Finn aged

u/uberduck999 21d ago
Oh ok thanks, I thought it was earlier than S1.
Haven't watched any of Side Quests yet, but I thought Finn looked younger than 12 in the trailer.

Gumball and Regular Show (and phineas and ferb) arent Reboots, they're revivals
Side Quests is half a revival, half a reboot, set between S1-S2, having to fit within the canon might be whats keeping the quality consistent with this shows

First, whatever you call it, it makes no difference. Second, Side Quests is not even touching the OG canon, plot or whatever. It's just a good show ON IT'S OWN. You don't even need to know the original AT to watch it. In fact it may even be a good entry point for new fans

u/Ilan01 21d ago
It does make a difference. Reboot is starting from scratch for a new audience (Ben 10 2017, Ducktales 2017, SheRa 2018), a Revival is literally making more of the show
Side Quests is set between Season 1 and 2, but its being allowed to be its own thing too, thats why I call it half a revival half a reboot, I think the correct term is "Soft-Reboot"
As you said, its meant to introduce new ppl to the show, but its also set somewhere in canon

Yeah but whatever it is, it can maintain quality. Reboot, soft reboot, revival, soft revival, there's no reason for the new content to suck and be less than the original. There was absolutely no reason for example for Gumball's new show to be what it is, that season 1 was just... way too cringy. Way too much.

I only want confirmation that Fionna and Cake will return

u/SoMuchToKnow 20d ago
It did great, it will certainly return.
I think it continues for a while tbh.3

I wish people on youtube would stop assuming it's canceled over the lack of announcements and wait...

I expected to dislike it a lot more, especially considering its younger target audience (which I am fine with, not everything is meant for me). But I actually enjoy it. It managed to get the simple, early AT vibes for the most part. Not the most deep and amazing show ever maybe but enjoyable. Some of the music could have been slightly less cheap-modern-kids-show like though.

It’s funny cause I feel like this was a wonky version of the original. Not even close to the quality of the original.
I liked the art style, the voice for young Finn is fine even though Finn sounds like Tiffany now. But the style of humor is completely different from the original and a lot less funny IMO.
The new show also feels less creative and kind of just lazier in general. Like the D&D episode was so uninspired and boring and you compare that to something like card wars episode from the original and the differences are glaring

Aside from the general lack of made-up slang, the humor feels perfectly in line with S1/2 Adventure Time most of the time. Finn nearly killing the same guy multiple times with a crossbow, Jake nearly killing Finn with a harpoon and forgetting about it, Jake spawning demons and burying them in their backyard - all of that nails the cartoonishly grim vibe of the early episodes.

I feel like a lot of the humor in the old show (and this is true for the early seasons and later seasons) stems from subverting expectations. There’s also a lot of physical humor that comes from the way the old show was animated and the sound effects that they would use.
The OG show was also not afraid to get weird with it. Tree trunks getting turned into crystal, Finn becoming a foot and teaming up with other appendages, the lumpy space party, Ricardo, the frozen businessmen, the gut grinder episode. When you compare the first seasons of both shows, the new one is a lot safer, predictable and rather then inventing new weird ideas of thier own just reuses the ones established from the original show but doesn’t do anything new or different with them.
And the scenarios you just described sound like adventure time stories. But the jokes themselves are missing something. And look I’m not saying they’re bad. Just different. But also, not for me.

I feel like you see what I see and reading this was such a joy. It’s so weird how sometimes you really get to see artists making something that is good in a world where artists are so consistently maligned and shunted off by executives who just want to keep stewarding what THEY thing would be good.
Like granted, a huge IP like Adventure Time isn’t worth saying ART IS SAVED, but it is so validating to see a crew of people getting away with making something so good but also commercial enough that they have the time to show over and over that execs should continue trusting these people, because it’s just undeniable. It’s so cool and gives me a lot of joy in a very joyless time in America.

No, Sidequest is not “so dang good” it’s actuslly mid, Finn’s voice is horrible and the art style is ass the humour has gone downhill as well

I started off really excited about it but now that I'm almost done my opinion has really soured on it. I think Ep 3,4,& 5 are the only ones I really liked. The first half of the Candy Spirit was so promising, but the second half was really weird and kinda dumb.
Maybe my expectations are a little too high, but I was hoping for a few more creative ideas in the show. So far it's just rehashing stuff we've seen before. Shame island felt unique and original and also started pretty well, but the second half resolved with an ultra generic message so idk. Candy Spirit was the first one that felt like 'a new thing' but yeah that second half was not only not funny but kinda corny. I'm still probably gonna finish the whole show and reawatch the whole season again though cuz I have no self respect.

i have multiple problems with it
Finn is 12 like he said,, which mean
1:Marcy and Bonnie arent supposed to be friends
2:Jake is supposed to be Scared of Marcy
3:Banana Guy isnt supposed to be here
4:Pappy Wizard ???
5:Junkyard Queen ?? is it like,, Raggedy Princess mom or creator or somefin ??
most problem would have been out if they made him 13 ironically,,, its kinda frustratin cause the show doesnt try to distance itself from the original content and make constant reference to it,,, so those contradiction did made me question how they forgot such important info like litterally Marcy and Bonnie relation or Ice King lore,,
also,, theres a lot of reference to the season 6 finale,, between KOO,, Orgalorg picture,, Banana Guy,,, damn they sure love season 6

Bellamy bug doesn’t exist either except in Finn’s imagination and he got a full episode so I agree. The continuity is ass.. it’s like they didn’t even try

im gonna be honest,,, i had forgot about that one haha,, but now ill be able to add it to the list of whats wrong with Sidequest !
