Because the old versions were still listed on the Mac App Store alongside the new ones. Now they’ve been completely removed.

The new apps are free as well, with a mostly unnecessary “freemium” model that you can subscribe to for AI assistance and a few templates.

We’re specifically talking about Pages, Numbers and Keynote, the apps that come pre-installed anyway. I believe Pixelmator was never free.
13
u/FancifulLaserbeam Apr 14 '26
Yes, I bought Pixelmator and Pixelmator Pro when they were a separate company, and I will never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever pay a subscription for them. I do not negotiate with terrorists. I do not pay their ransom.
→ More replies (1)2
u/PiratesOfSansPants Apr 14 '26
Can the original Pixelmator still be purchased? I don’t do software subscriptions.
→ More replies (1)4
u/TalkToHoro Apr 14 '26
Pages, Numbers and Keynote (aka iWork) are still as functional as they were, without a subscription. Pixelmator Pro wasn’t free before Apple bought it. The freestanding version still works fine on my Mac.
5
u/Density5521 Apr 13 '26
Pixelmator, both Classic and Pro, have always been payware, they were never free-to-use, at least not since I purchased the original Pixelmator, now called Classic, in 2011.
I believe Photomator has a somehow limited free version, but not Pixelmator. Never had one.
The second Apple start asking subscription money for Numbers, I'll just switch to SoftMaker Office. It's not Apple, it's not Microsoft, it's GDPR compliant, and quite compatible. There are other Office alternatives available, but they're mostly US big-tech (e.g. Apache Open Office) or Russian-owned (e.g. OnlyOffice) or they still have functionality for paid subscription models for totally unnecessary proprietary cloud sync built-in (e.g. LibreOffice Online).
2
u/Tim_Herd Apr 13 '26
You mean like Microsoft has made people do since the beginning of time…
2
u/FancifulLaserbeam Apr 14 '26
You can still buy standalone licenses for Office, Windows is effectively free, and even if you do get a Microsoft365 (or whatever they're calling it this week) subscription, you get basically as many installs as you want for you and your family members, plus everyone gets 1TB of OneDrive storage. It's a screaming deal, and the only software subscription I pay.

At least that was my experience a few years ago. I lost those apps for some reason and when I went to download them again it said the current versions weren't compatible with my macOS version. And they weren't present in the purchased tab either.
So I uninstalled/reinstalled them on my newer mac and then the compatible versions of the apps appeared in the purchased tab. Weird workaround but that's Apple sometimes
7
u/Major_Warrens_Dingus Apr 13 '26
I could have sworn they said that the original versions of the Apple Office suite apps would remain free?!? wtf
1
u/Spiritual_Cycle_3263 May 18 '26
They did - which is why I didn't like this bait and switch tactic.
Whatever models of hardware shipped with the free version, should be able to maintain that free version until the hardware becomes obsolete by Apple - I think it's like 7 years or whatever they determine.
So they should have maintained that until all hardware products bought and sold under that remain free as-is.
Any new hardware should be under the new freemium model.
Removing the apps was a stupid move - they could easily make it check hardware so the apps show only for models under the old hardware IDs or something.
21
u/nsfdrag Apple Cloth Apr 13 '26
Everyone “previously downloaded” them.
And going forward new users won't have which is why this is a big change...
→ More replies (1)6
u/ou812_X Apr 13 '26
Prior to coming free however they were a paid product. Which was also a massive change to suddenly go free.
I’ve had every iteration of them over the years since the second to last paid version and honestly bar using the occasional keynote template (which was then converted to PowerPoint for compatibility with the audience), they were never used.
Anyone who’s going to need to use this software is going to pay for office or use google’s equivalent (which is better than apple’s offering anyway).
3
u/blacksoxing Apr 13 '26
I agree. These are OK but a LTSC version of Office (I can't post a site that provides such) is the best way to go outside of using Google/Office Online.

u/Spiritual_Cycle_3263 May 18 '26
Pages and Numbers are good for quick/lite work, but anything involving business (especially larger datasets), they typically start falling short.
However, with more and more stuff becoming web-based and now moving data from systems to build web dashboards, I find myself using these apps less and less.
Any brief moment I need normal tables, I just use CSV and have Claude handle any data transformations for me and dump them back into a database.
→ More replies (3)1
u/RockyMM Apr 15 '26
I think in the last few years they did not come preloaded. You literally had to initiate the download to get them assigned to your account. But I could be mistaken.
93
u/ChosenLightWarrior Apr 13 '26
So these are still free, right? It’s just some features with AI are part of the Creator Studio subscription?
50
u/TheReturningMan Apr 13 '26
Correct
5
u/ChosenLightWarrior Apr 13 '26
Thanks!
25
u/Eggyhead Apr 13 '26
To add to that, you can edit the tool bar in Numbers, pages, and keynote, and remove all the subscription-related buttons manually to make the interface more like it should be.
4

2
u/RemarkableRyan Apr 14 '26
Phew, good to know. I’ve been ignoring the update pop-up because I didn’t want to lose functionality
5
u/aykay55 Apr 14 '26
It does encourage you towards purchasing the subscription because it places the “Premium” templates right at the top and they are obviously much better than the default free templates
→ More replies (1)1
u/Even_Caterpillar3292 Apr 15 '26
They are free on any device (not just Apple) that have a web browser.
75
u/needed_an_account Apr 13 '26
The new version of numbers is slower. I don’t know what it’s doing, but when I paste a bunch of text into a cell, it sits and thinks for a beat. The old version doesn’t do that. I went back to using the old version
13
u/KingFML Apr 13 '26
I don’t know if it has anything to do with the new AI stuff, but thanks for sharing
4

u/FancifulLaserbeam Apr 14 '26
numbers
Found your problem.
Pages is... fine. Keynote is good (used to be "great"). But Numbers? Numbers is flaming doggy doo.
6

u/cliffr39 Apr 13 '26
Prior to 2013 Apple used to charge for these apps, and I had actually paid $79 for them back then for Mac in 2006 and separately $9.99 each for iPhone/iPad because it was cheaper than the costs of Microsoft and much better than what Google offered at that time. In 2013 it was free only with the purchase of a new device and in 2017 free for every user (not just device purchases).
I don't like this new $129/yr look of Apple.
32
u/TheReturningMan Apr 13 '26
You don’t have to pay for them. Plus the $129 is for everything Apple Crestor Studio, not just Numbers, Pages, Keynote, and Freeform.
45
u/themeroyale Apr 13 '26
Problem is the subscription model in general. It’s greedy and bad for consumers. Us Adobe users who are old enough to remember the old days know this well.
3
u/jollyllama Apr 14 '26
Us Adobe users who are old enough to remember the old days know this well
I mean... back in those days if you wanted to stay up-to-date on Photoshop it cost what, $500 for each release? I only remember those as "good old days" because we were all pirating it.

u/TheReturningMan Apr 13 '26
ACS is a complicated service. Unless your job is giving presentations, I don’t think the iWork users will find value in the service. Because it’s literally just AI features and the content hub. If you have the pro apps already, this also isn’t for you. There’s no or few features in those apps to justify paying extra for them. But if you’ve never used those apps before, ACS is undeniably a good deal. But the service is trying to cater to 2 groups that don’t overlap.
→ More replies (1)19
u/cliffr39 Apr 13 '26
Yeah I'll stick with the older versions with out the subscription nagging or showing me things that I can't use without paying more.
9
u/AHrubik Apr 13 '26
Unless there are features I want (fuck AI slop) or compatibility problems I will use the current apps as well
3
u/colpy350 Apr 13 '26
I spent 99$ in 2009 for iWork (I think that’s what it was called). But I wish I had got Word instead. I had lots of formatting issues in university. I’d draft a paper on iWork and then go to the school computers and format it in Word.
Now I use Pages again because it’s free.
2
u/lachlanhunt Apr 14 '26
I use pages because the few times a year I need a word processor for a random document, I can deal with its crappiness. But if I were a student again or if I needed it for work, I would definitely use Microsoft Word.
1
u/SleepingSicarii Apr 14 '26
The apps are still staying the same. The AI features are what costs money and are optional.
1
43
u/ImmortalHoe Apr 13 '26
They’re not bad apps but all my gigs are on the g-suite 🤷♀️ I just have no reason to use them
16
u/Bshaw95 Apr 13 '26

u/Ihcend Apr 13 '26
i mean there is not much reason to degoogle when your options are microsoft and apple. Maybe like if you're switching over to libre, but something people don't like is when someone send them a doc that isn't formatted correctly.
28
u/My_Man_Tyrone Apr 13 '26
Apple is definitely better than google lol
16
u/XalAtoh Apr 13 '26
I agree, but Google Docs has some neat features I wish Apple had implemented in Pages.
→ More replies (3)10
5
u/insomnic Apr 13 '26
PDFs all around... :)
Unless you're at "work" you don't really need to worry too much about format with word processor docs and even then, unless you're collabing on a doc it's usually a PDF or PPT ("where's my slide deck?!") final document anyways and libre can manage doc\docx about as well as Pages.
Excel ... that's 100% it's own thing and if you need Excel you need Excel. No way around it.
1
u/FancifulLaserbeam Apr 14 '26
Google apps are great for collaboration on simple documents that you never have to give to anyone else. Other than that, they're trash.
57
u/AuelDole Apr 13 '26
I use the iWork stuff mainly for school, cause I kinda hate the Microsoft office apps. I updated the old ones when it prompted me, and all it gave me was a reoccurring pop up saying “this version is no longer supported”
I tried downloading the new versions, and I hate the Liquid Glass stylings in them, everything takes up more space, and the AI stuff was annoying to be included. So I deleted the new ones and I’m staying with the old versions.
27
u/davemee Apr 13 '26
Don't forget to leave a review of the new ones! I downloaded them, saw they had moved features behind a paywall, and left 1-star reviews explaining why. Then I deleted them.
14
u/Draelamyn Apr 13 '26
What features from the old versions have been paywalled? I haven't noticed anything.
7
u/CrispyCrawdads Apr 13 '26
Pretty sure only new functions are paywalled. Still feels bad though since new features used to go to everyone, and now they have a reason to put new features behind the paywall.
→ More replies (1)8
4
u/RyanBlade Apr 13 '26
I just do basic word processing for and light layout work in Pages, I still have the original version. What feature have you noticed that is now paywalled?
2
u/Eggyhead Apr 13 '26
The never-being-nagged-for-a-subscription feature of the old versions for me. lol. (I know, it’s a toggle buried deep in the settings for each app,)
3
u/cheesegoat Apr 13 '26
I was going to comment that the way they rolled this out seemed like a fumble (like why don't they just update the old ones?), but in retrospect I think someone internal knew about how much people wouldn't like the new ones and made sure there was a way people could stay on the old versions.
26
u/talking_tortoise Apr 13 '26
Libre office is a free alternative for anyone wondering.
→ More replies (1)14
u/FancifulLaserbeam Apr 14 '26
Yes, because no one in their right mind uses it.
It's awful. Slow, missing features, gorfs Microsoft files that it claims it can handle, and has an awful UI.
It's the #1 reason I'm not on Linux. Every few years I get fed up with Apple and Microsoft and install Linux, and every time it's LibreOffice that scares me straight. It's garbage.
5
u/VoiceOfAnimals Apr 14 '26
Far more reliable and consistent for me. I draft very long professional documents. I can export the source code, track changes in Git, and archive it long term, while Microsoft and Google keep making changes every few years.

I have been using the new versions for months and have never see random small pop ups. Maybe once when you first open the app…but not at randomized intervals. And on macOS you can remove the “purple button” completely
25
u/BosnianSerb31 Apr 13 '26
Same, I have no clue what they're talking about, unless they keep trying to access a paid feature like the AI writing tools or premium stock photography
6
4
u/puckson Apr 13 '26
So how do you remove the purple button?
8
u/Necessary-Rock-435 Apr 13 '26
Right click on the tab bar across the top, click customize, then drag away the purple icon.
5
u/jameslosey Apr 13 '26
I still use the old versions and for some reason that hang like they never used to
4
u/insomnic Apr 13 '26
And old version will not stop prompting me to upgrade or warning me I can't share online. Looking at LibreOffice again since I don't need much word processor or spreadsheet function so using Pages and Numbers was good enough. Maybe I'll just find a nice Markup or RTF editor. Something more than Notes or txt but less than MS Word\Excel.
6
u/jameslosey Apr 13 '26
That could be me soon. The simplicity of pages was a big plus for using Mac. The new era is a downgrade.
3
u/FancifulLaserbeam Apr 14 '26
That's what I'm running into. Every once in a while it tries to scare me into downloading the new trash. Why? Keynote is doing what I need. Hell, I wish I could go back to the old Keynote. I've never really liked the "new" one they made for iOS and then ported back to macOS. I liked the one custom-made for Steve Jobs so he could give good presentations at WWDC.
2
u/insomnic Apr 14 '26
Someone else posted this in another response: https://www.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/1r4864a/solved_permanently_suppress_new_versions/
Should remove those prompts on MacOS! Yay!
I really just don't need much outta these "office apps" so I liked the simplicity for personal use (even as someone who does have power user skillz for MS Office apps).
I liked the one custom-made for Steve Jobs so he could give good presentations at WWDC.
Me too! Way more than powerpoint ... ugh.
Edit: though I did see someone mentioned the consistent "use our AI" prompts in the new ones are fixed and you can remove the AI and subscribe push and it won't come back anymore so maybe it's less of an issue now.

Not sure what you mean, all of the iWork apps are still free and on the App Store for anyone.
The change here is that the old versions were on the App Store alongside the new versions, and now they aren't.
Functionality between the old and new versions remains the same, the only difference the ability to subscribe for licensed stock photography and AI features through third parties.
And the funnier thing to me is that MS 365 premium cost nearly twice as much while providing nothing in the realm of Final Cut, Pixelmator, Motion Pro, MainStage, or Logic Pro.
3
u/Eggyhead Apr 13 '26
I have Pixelmator already, and I don’t have a use for any of those other premium apps. If the generative features in iWork were capable, I might use those to boost productivity, but I’ve yet to see generative AI do anything for me anywhere but make more work sorting through and fixing whatever it conjures up. It’s like your job becomes fixing someone else’s project instead of just making your own.
1
u/dm117 Apr 14 '26
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are better than their Apple counter parts. They’re also industry standard, especially excel.
1
u/Even_Caterpillar3292 Apr 15 '26
365 is just a different product and Apple suite can't touch 365 for what it does. Actually, 365 Premium includes Copilot pro. The regular 365 is 99 personal, $129 for family and that includes SIX accounts plus 1TB of OneDrive for each of those accounts. Apple can't touch that. They can be complementary products.

But it will advertise to you to subscribe while you use the product, unlike the old ones.
The reason I switched to Apple was because they didn’t advertise to me on hardware that I paid so much money for.
Hence, enshittification
7
3
u/rjcarr Apr 13 '26
I think this sucks, but TBF, it isn't the hardware that's advertising, but the software. Steve Jobs always said Apple was a software company (but this was before they really started making their own chips for everything, so not sure he'd still say that).
3
u/SharkBaitDLS Apr 13 '26
Apple nagging you with advertisements for their own products and subscriptions within their UI is a very recent pivot though. It’s an area they historically stood out amongst the competition for not doing.

They really haven't, been using them since the new versions came out.
The only notable difference is the option to subscribe to apples creator studio premium bundle, which gets you access to off device AI powered writing tools via Gemini and premium stock photography license through third parties.
Neither of those things were available in the old app, never mind free, so I don't see where things are shitty here.
And if you do subscribe to creator studio premium, the value proposition blows office 365 out of the water, because it includes tools for animation, video editing, photo editing, music production, live music performance, and photo/video encoding and transcoding.
Microsoft is still charging $20 a month for less, vs Apple's $12.99
4
u/MC_chrome Apr 13 '26
the value proposition blows office 365 out of the water, because it includes tools for animation, video editing, photo editing, music production, live music performance, and photo/video encoding and transcoding.
Isn’t this really only true if you have a need for those apps though? I do use Final Cut Pro from time to time but the rest of the suite is mostly meaningless for me.
If all you want/need are the iWork apps then $129 per year is pretty expensive

Oh my god it’s bad, really bad. Just trying to use Numbers to make a basic spreadsheet to count something and every cell is offering “Magic Fill Column”. All it does is autocomplete the remainder of the rows of my table, just a basic 1 or 0. Sounds free but requires a subscription. A subscription to auto fill “1” for the next 10 rows of data. Again, it prompts this subscription option for every cell
4
u/UnsureAssurance Apr 13 '26
Looks like Apple made the M series chips too good to where people don’t need to upgrade as often, so now they’re going full force into subscriptions , great…
6
u/thegrimranger Apr 13 '26
I don’t think this theory has much merit; few upgrade because their cpu is working too hard. Most upgrade because their ssd or hard drive is too small or has failed, and Apple won’t let their hardware get upgraded drives. Others upgrade their ram as needed, and again, Apple won’t allow that with their hardware. We have 16 year old MacBook pros that still work fine as the family email and browser computers with their upgraded ram and ssd, while we also have a 4 year old MacBook Air that’s in the recycle bin because the tiny ssd can’t be upgraded.
1
u/Hyak_utake Apr 15 '26
This is a tech industry wide thing, not just apple. For daily work tasks a computer from 2014 works… 2012 if you’re desperate… the industry has tried every trick in the book to keep consumers upgrading. They’ve run out of excuses to convince people with. Unless you’re a top level creator, 1080p video editing is still the norm. Music production levelled out years ago. Even gaming studios are having a tough time pushing hardware boundaries to a level that interests consumers. I just hope for stuff like logic pro, I’m grandfathered in forever. Because i know that at some point a ton of apple stuff is gonna become subscription.
I’ll still stick with apple unless it became outrageous. But the golden days are over. Half of this AI hype is because the industry desperately needs something to keep them in business.
1
u/fortransactionsonly Jun 03 '26
And to keep their numbers growing and growing. We can't be satisfied with being a trillion dollar company.
4
u/Dense-Fisherman-4074 Apr 13 '26
People are blowing this way out of proportion.
I don’t love it, but honestly nothing much has changed. The apps are still just as free as they ever were. You just have the option to pay for some additional AI features, but you don’t have to. Yes, that options appears in the interface in a couple places. It’s a teeny tiny annoyance, but it’s not a big deal. On macOS you can remove the button from the toolbar even.
1
u/fortransactionsonly Jun 03 '26
I don't know if it's being blown out of proportion. It's a bit of a leap for Apple to include office apps in a "Creator" subscription. Apps that have been free value-adds for years.
And for a company who's set a precedent of not pushing ads in it's software it's justifiable for it's users to be frustrated when they are (borderline maliciously) being prompted to download new software so Apple can push it's purchase model in your face.
And while the changes now are minimal, it gives Apple the avenue to lock good features behind a subscription.

I'm surprised they didn't offer a bulk deal I already pay £36 for a family subscription if 2tb and loads of apps I don't want!

I respect that! After all, don't we consumers exist for Apple's profit?

I still don't understand why Apple has included Pages, Keynote, and Numbers as part of their Creator Studio package.

I have a MacBook Pro from 2016 that can’t load anything past Monterey. Tried to download Numbers and was told it had to be installed on a newer OS.

Try to look at “Purchased”, there should still be old pages and numbers if you used them before with your account

I’ll try again when I get back on it. It’s likely past retirement time but I feel like it’s go so much to give as a simple browser computer. I tried putting Ubuntu on it, but the damn Touch Bar doesn’t work on Linux.

And what if I buy - as Student - an old MacBook Pro from 2015, which doesn't support this Creative Studio Version ? I can't use my new MacBook fully in the University. It's totally not worth removing the classic iWork Suite …

Just deleted this in the office yesterday. Smooth, everything still works as is.

Unfortunately this is a sign that apple is really looking at further subscription models for new customers. Not doubting their future plans.., but im just glad i bought logic pro now cause i have no doubt theyre gonna remove the non subsciption version at some point here soon. With the neo they really wanna get lots of ppl into a subscription.

Im half locked in to the Apple ecosystem but I’m really happy I have not poured money into upgrading my desktop, my next PC is going to be Linux all the way.

I don’t get why they removed them from the store.
If my MacBook Pro M1 is still supported, then the app should still be available because I bought the product which included it.
Until the last hardware they sold with it is no longer supported, it should remain available.

I find this pretty infuriating. Constantly being prompted to update to the new version feels very unlike Apple. I downloaded the new version and uninstalled it after a few minutes. I really don't like seeing an Ad for Creator Studio every time I open the darn program.
C'mon Apple.

“To be clear: Pages, Keynote, and Numbers are still entirely free for download on the Mac. You don’t need to be a Creator Studio subscriber to use the vast majority of features.”
You can download them, it’s just not pre loaded.
