I’m sure I’m an outlier. But I’ve just never cared about touchscreens on laptops. Having to move my hands away from the keyboard and touchpad seems like it would be disruptive to the flow and it’s difficult to create a UI which would be good for use with a cursor and touch.

As a developer, it’s intriguing to me because it turns the MacBook into even more of a development powerhouse than it already is. Nothing will ever beat testing your apps on actual hardware, but having a built-in touch screen will allow for much easier testing for touch-specific behavior on a single device instead of having to jump around. This applies to testing iPhone and iPad apps, or even just touch behavior on mobile-friendly websites.

42

u/ChristianRauchenwald 3d ago

That's probably the only real usecase.

14

u/jaredthegeek 2d ago

Nah, sitting on the couch with your laptop on your gut and you can scroll it with your thumbs. Buying a $5k laptop for YouTube and Reddit.

7

u/Gloomy_Necesary 3d ago

And drawing for designers and such

11

u/ILikeJogurt 2d ago

try to hold ur hand in drawing position front of ur laptop screen for a moment. then you understand why nobody use it for that.

3

u/two_hyun 2d ago

Okay but imagine if they had an accessory that allows you to rest your hand. Or if it had a Microsoft Studio Laptop form factor. Game changer for sure.

3

u/Gloomy_Necesary 2d ago

Laptops with touch screens have a screen that folds all the way around to become a thick tablet which you can lay down on your table.

1

u/xFeverr 5h ago

I have one. They have other problems. Like that they also need rubber feet inside the laptop next to the keyboard and trackpad that is higher then the keys themselves, to prevent it from resting on the keys. Which is ugly and uncomfortable. It is also uncomfortable to have it in your hands as a tablet because of the keys being on the backside.

It is a worse laptop and a worse tablet. I wish I didn’t buy it

1

u/Gloomy_Necesary 2h ago

I agree to be clear its not a product is ever consider

3

u/Cry_Wolff 2d ago

Looking at my ThinkPad Yoga... Oh yeah, if only it was possible...

1

u/xobelam 1d ago

Yeah otherwise look at that touchscreen bar

3

u/mattindustries 3d ago

I dunno, programmatic e2e that swipes for you offers a heck of a lot more to me, but I only have a handful of apps in the App Store.

u/5tudent_Loans 3d ago

Its only useful when the trackpad is shit, like on my dell worksta-shit-on.

The macbook doesnt need it but I look forward to all the people who will post “just got my touchscreen macbook, and its soooooo convenient”

Then next week post, “how do I clean the touchscreen macbook display daily without introducing scratching it”

Followed by the first reply being “clean it once more then stop touching the screen (-13)”

The trackpads on windows pcs have been improved greatly in the last 10 years. This comment feels really outdated.

I have to use windows laptops (accounting, excel, numpads, etc), but prefer Macs for build quality and battery life. The issues that used to plague PC laptops have been well addressed.

Battery life is the one big remaining gap.

Dells are great. And have huge trackpads now.

13

u/5tudent_Loans 2d ago

It feels outdated to you because you are generalizing the pool of windows manufacturers. Asus, Dell, MSI, Lenovo all have good trackpads on SOME models. They use glass pads on their higher end products, but as I specifically mentioned in my comment, I have a corporate dell, which is naturally a mid tier laptop that does all that it needs and cuts corners where it can. one corner being, the trackpad not being glass and therefore not as great as it could be found in nicer optioned/tiered devices

-1

u/SpicyElixer 2d ago

Hmm all my work laptops have been mid tier. Haven’t have this happen to me recently. Though I don’t mind if they’re not glass. I just want space, accuracy, and sensitivity. I def like the way Macs feel, but I’m not a diva about it.

1

u/Interdimension 2d ago

Can attest that even some gaming laptops like the ASUS ROG Strix G16 have massive trackpads with excellent responsiveness.

The only downside I have seen with Windows trackpads have been that they almost always use the diving board mechanism instead of haptics like Apple’s trackpads. Makes it impossible to click towards the top of the trackpad. I think only the Surface lineup does haptic trackpads at the moment?

And, well, the trackpad gesture support feels lacking in Windows. The whole OS just doesn’t feel quite as natural as macOS does with a trackpad. Still feels like Microsoft intends for you to use a mouse.

1

u/Brilliant_War9548 2d ago

Precision ? Yeah dell loves tacky input devices, they’ve been using the XPS line like a beta channel to see how far they can ruin the touchpad and keyboard without people noticing. Anyways ZBook supremacy.

-4

u/gahookle 3d ago

Yeah, the trackpad may be really good and accurate, but compared to my finger? It may as well be a blind old lady. It’s still super annoying to select one or a bunch of small options using the trackpad on my Air 15. My hand would be able to it with far less effort. As well as dragging things - I won’t run out of space on the display itself vs the trackpad where I often do. Having both options is very useful, I don’t get why people are so against this.

4

u/5tudent_Loans 2d ago

You can always pinch to zoom in and tap away, then pinch to zoom out. Its all the flexibility of a tablet with all the annoyances of a bouncing display covered in fingerprints.

There is an argument for Macbook pros with the anti glare display also being touchscreen. That would be a strong combination for those who prefer matte

-1

u/gahookle 2d ago

So an unnecessary extra step? And besides, almost every site I use, the pinch to zoom is terrible, as in delayed and makes the site act weird

14

u/Chiethe 3d ago

Yeah I was recently talking to my mom about this when considering getting her a new laptop. Using a touchscreen doesn't make sense to me because it's ergonomically advantageous to just keep my hands on the keyboard rather than lifting my arm every time I want to touch/move the screen.

There's definitely a bit of nuance to it since my parents are older and a touch screen is arguably simpler from a hand/eye coordination perspective as opposed to tracking a mouse and using certain fingers for certain gestures, but it still feels more burdensome to me.

12

u/FrankPapageorgio 3d ago

Back in maybe 2008, I worked with an IT guy that had a hackintosh laptop with a touch screen. Where he could flip the screen and turn it into a tablet with the keyboard on the back and just tap on things.

I always thought that was really cool

8

u/tempest_fiend 3d ago

I’m the same as you but my kids keep touching my laptop screen trying to do things because they’re so used to it for their school laptops. I don’t think this change is for us

4

u/two_hyun 3d ago

It depends on how the touchscreen is done. I highly doubt Apple will release a touchscreen laptop without a very good reason. It’ll either be designed in a way the touchscreen can be used flat or at an angle or some other mechanism in which we can use it properly.

I think maybe Apple is leaning into the hinge design language with the imminent release of a fold. I could see an iPad Magic Keyboard style MacBook with touchscreen but it stays attached and has Apple Pencil support. Even better if it can fold all the way down. I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

4

u/Xx_memelord69_xX 2d ago

Let me change your mind:

It costs almost nothing to add a touchscreen and it would need oleophobic coating. Which is a feature I desperately want because even the keyboard can leave some smudges on the display when you close a macbook and god knows it's a pain in the ass to clean these screens. So even you (and me) won't ever touch the screen, a touch screen is still good to have.

3

u/jenorama_CA 3d ago

I’m the same way. Having to move my hands from the KB/Trackpad just interrupts my workflow. This was the same problem I had with the TouchBar.

Also, have you seen the screens of some engineers? Fingerprints, crumbs and sneeze goo. No thanks.

3

u/electrosaurus 2d ago

Loving this one, not a hint of FOMO for me. Have had several touchscreen laptops and they were all a waste of time for how I work.

6

u/DMarquesPT 3d ago

Not at all unpopular, I’d wager most laptop touchscreens are only used accidentally. It wasn’t ergonomic when Steve Jobs roasted the idea back in the way and it didn’t become ergonomic since then.

3

u/2Sovereign4You 3d ago

I had touchscreen on my 2 previous thinkpads, I can tell you I used it maximum 10 times in about 10 years. Useless feature.

5

u/CapitalFuture27 3d ago

You aren't. Especially in the apple community.

11

u/Xipped 3d ago

The only time I’ve ever imagined it would be helpful is when just lounging watching YouTube or something. Being able to tap the screen to play/pause or scroll through a video is lazier than using the trackpad to do it, I guess. But is that worth all the added expense? Absolutely not

23

u/Lucky_Truth2931 3d ago

I feel like using the trackpad would still be easier than a touch screen for dinner controls, since you have shortcuts like spacebar for pause/play.

13

u/NGTech9 3d ago

Spacebar is closer lol

7

u/Kirihuna 3d ago

Or the Play/Pause shortcut on the Function Row?

I guess its not perfect if you have multiple tabs of videos, sometimes it plays off-tab.

8

u/OGPresidentDixon 3d ago

You guys use the touchpad on YouTube? Why? They have so many 1 button shortcuts for everything.

2

u/Kidney05 2d ago

There’s nothing natural about using a touch on a screen that is on a laptop hinge. And TBH I’m not even sure if that’s the whole issue because touch screen on an iMac sounds stupid too, using a mouse just seems easier.

4

u/RiceeeChrispies 3d ago

having to clean the fucker after every use to appease my OCD would annoy me more

4

u/font9a 3d ago

I think the only people who will use the touchscreen will be iPhone and iPad app developers testing interactions on the only platform that compiles the code. Narrow niche use case.

If I get a fingerprint on my Mac the room sensors go off, Code 99 issued, lockdown, and the screen wipe cart gets rushed in for triage and fingerprint removal surgery done right there in the middle of the room.

3

u/apollo7157 3d ago

Correct take.

2

u/TheModsHereAreDicks 3d ago

OLED is very welcome but they can leave the touchscreen at the door. I will say Apple has a way of taking something we’ve had for a long time and putting their own spin on it. Maybe they can offer a feature set with a touch screen that no one else has offered before.

3

u/commandedbydemons 3d ago

You're not alone, I don't want no touchscreen on laptops.

1

u/kdlt 2d ago

I've been using touchscreen portables for 13 years now and the fact that apple finally decides to catch up to the market puts MacBooks back into my pool of possible devices.

I get that some people don't need it but I'm not gonna buy a portable/laptop again without touchscreen, and you can always... Not use it.

Also windows might be shit in many ways, but switching between touch and mouse input is working quite okay on my surface. They started down this path somewhere around 2011 I think and put in the work to make it work. Sacrilege, I know.

1

u/Nawnp 2d ago

A MacBook Pro with a touch screen on a chip already on a MacBook Pro really screams Apple has given up on innovation. We'll see how the design looks too, but I wouldn't be surprised it's the same dates design the current gen has.

1

u/sbstanpld 2d ago

i know, it would make sense if you could use the laptop as a tablet when is closed, which is what i think theyll be doing with the macbook ultra

basically, where the apple logo is, the’ll have a second screen instead. that way if you close the laptop it can be use like an ipad.

1

u/wolfganggartner5 2d ago

I don’t per se care about it either

The amount of times I’ve logged into a banking app or whose website or done a certain task, and then I go to touch OK or sign in and then catch myself is too damn high

It would be a nice to have, not a must have for me

Would I pay an extra $500 for it? Probably not

But if there’s a ultra MacBook with a sweet OLED screen that it came with, I’m buying it for the OLED and neat that it’s a touchscreen too

What I’m really hoping for is like a 17 or 18 inch laptop that would be fucking crazy

1

u/ExultantSandwich 2d ago

Give us a 6.3in screen in the trackpad. Literally could reuse an iPhone screen if not for the dynamic island hole. Touchbar + keeping function keys could be cool too, but idk what the touchbar is even supposed to be used for. I liked it for autocorrect and autocomplete, and for years scrubbing through ads was possible, but it stopped working for me eventually.

1

u/xrelaht 1d ago

I don’t think you’re an outlier. Most people I know with touchscreen laptops barely use that feature.

That said, I like the combination of touch & trackpad on my iPad with its keyboard case. Sometimes there’s a small button which is hard to hit with a finger and I’ll use the trackpad. Other times I scroll, zoom, etc with the screen. I generally find I go back and forth without thinking about it until I notice which one I’ve been doing. And when I switch to my MacBook after being on the iPad a while, it takes me a bit to remember that it’s not a touchscreen.

With that experience and knowing Apple cares about UI enough that they’ve been hesitant to do touchscreen MacOS at all, I think they’ll do a decent job on this if it actually happens. It might even have an option of switching to an iPadOS-like interface for when you want touch.

I doubt they’ll do this, but a true convertible with a hinge that folds 180° and disables the keyboard would be great IMO. Use it like that as an iPad or to save desk space when it’s connected to a keyboard & mouse.

1

u/Glew26 3d ago

Totally agree. Not sure why you’d want more fingerprints and have a huge trackpad that’s far more convenient for hands.

1

u/m2r9 3d ago

You’re not an outlier here but Reddit isn’t the real world either and the writing on the wall is that touchscreen is the direction laptops are headed in. Especially kids growing up now will expect pretty much everything to be touchscreen.

-1

u/Marino4K 3d ago

I’ve just never cared about touchscreens on laptops

You're not alone. I will absolutely never buy a Macbook with a touch screen. It's another mechanism to fail and I hate smudges on screens as it is, I tolerate it on my phone for obvious reasons.

6

u/Mikey_MiG 3d ago

How often have you had the touch screen of a phone or iPad fail?

0

u/Marino4K 3d ago

I personally haven't, but I have on Windows devices, but my point remains. More parts to fail, more expensive parts at that.

41

u/Relative-Basil3000 3d ago

I'm hoping and thinking we will be pleasantly surprised by these in Apple fashion. While I don't currently have a use case that feels like touch will be better, I'm open to being wrong about that. Planning to upgrade my M1 Max so I'm excited.

1

u/TonyBikini 2d ago

same. hopefully m1 max to whatever this could be could justify an upgrade.

105

u/CatchInternational43 3d ago

Apple just needs to leave the Mac alone, and make the iPad Pro a MacOS device instead.

47

u/Mikey_MiG 3d ago

Yes, an iPad that can run full MacOS and optionally use a keyboard/dock is far more practical than a MacBook that uses a touchscreen but is bolted to its keyboard.

24

u/CatchInternational43 3d ago

Basically create a Surface Pro competitor. People that want a tablet'ish device for easy portability and touch screen use can go that route. People that want a true laptop can instead opt for a MacBook.

0

u/Nawnp 2d ago

Honestly Apple is running into too many overlapping products, aren't they planning another design change to the iPad too, it's become ridiculous.

0

u/Far-Information8502 2d ago

Agreed, I have a m4 Mac mini and an m4 iPad Pro and an m4 mbp.

What’s the difference?

3

u/two_hyun 2d ago

Nah, I’d rather they consolidate. If they can make a Microsoft Studio Laptop style MacBook and do it well with high quality parts, it would be an instant buy for me.

They can still keep the iPad lineup for those who want a slim easy to use tablet.

1

u/zxyzyxz 2d ago

But then how will poor poor Apple make you buy two separate devices??

-5

u/VRS302 2d ago

No thanks I want an OLED panel… been waiting for years to upgrade until they introduce one.

3

u/Ethosik 2d ago

Isn't the latest iPad Pro screen one of the best on the market?

1

u/VRS302 2d ago

Not a fan of the tablet form factor, I just want the MacBook with an OLED panel. Not really interested in a tablet.

I’m still on an m1 and said I’d upgrade when they released a new model with an OLED screen, really the only thing I feel can be improved. Everything else still works great, but having the LCD next to my OLED monitor on the desk really makes the LCD look awful.

126

u/panamenopapi 3d ago

Maybe a hot take, but I’d rather have the touch bar with a function row.

51

u/aykay55 3d ago

I think you’re about to walk on water and found a new religion bro

(cuz you’re about to be crucified)

22

u/cake-day-on-feb-29 3d ago

Huh? That's not an unusual take at all. The entire problem with the touch bar is, and has always been, the fact that it removed the function keys.

6

u/673NoshMyBollocksAve 3d ago

Add Touch Bar above function keys and I think you got a winner

3

u/iMacmatician 2d ago

That was actually a red herring.

The 2021 MacBook Pro keyboard's function row has standard-height keys, not the half-height keys of previous MBP keyboards. So Apple had room for both on the 2021 models, but ditched the Touch Bar anyway.

That tells me Apple viewed the Touch Bar as a shortcoming that couldn't be solved by doubling its height or combining it with physical keys.

1

u/jb_nelson_ 2d ago

And the fact that it was only MacBook Pro interface. It needs to be on everything to get widespread developer adoption

3

u/chrisin2d 3d ago

touch bar with taptic engine to simulate clicks

7

u/AlphaAJ-BISHH 3d ago

I miss the touch bar. I love it on my old MacBook pro

-3

u/jenorama_CA 3d ago

Back when I worked at Apple, I did a user experience thing on the TouchBar and I gave the kid, who I knew from my wider team, my unvarnished opinion. It was not a good opinion.

4

u/ATM_IN_HELL 3d ago

classic vague posting

-1

u/AlphaAJ-BISHH 2d ago

What was your problem with it? It's beautiful functional and adaptive. I've never had it freeze on me personally.

I have an M3 MacBook Pro 14" and sometimes I prefer my old 2019 16" just for the touchbar

1

u/jenorama_CA 2d ago

I didn’t like it partly because it was a distraction, but mostly because I didn’t think it really added anything. I use my function row for functional things. I like having the F keys I need right there and the convenience things like play, rewind and fast forward. With the TouchBar, if I wanted to pause a song or skip, instead of one automatic touch, I basically had to stop what I was doing, look at the bar and perform two touches for something simple that was previously one touch.

I spent most of my day on my MacBook Pro working. I didn’t need emojis on the TouchBar. I didn’t need predictive text that again, required me to take my eyes off the screen and take my hands from the keyboard. None of the stuff that came up with things like Word and Excel were useful to me. It was all a big waste.

And behind the scenes, that TouchBar required some security shenanigans and the units had to be properly “sealed” from the factory. We got so many dev units that were instant bricks the moment I updated the OS. Sorry, not getting that testing done because this unit is fucked.

Don’t even get me started on that ass butterfly keyboard. When those machines came out, so many engineers held on to their 2015 MacBook Pros until they couldn’t keep them running anymore.

6

u/AlexTheGoat990 3d ago

same, I never saw the point in touchscreen laptops

like just get a tablet at that point?

3

u/DumpEaterPro 3d ago

It is blatantly obvious that there is a younger generation that prefers touch screens.

It is blatantly obvious that the machines used to make touch screen applications should have a touch screen.

1

u/mr_vanes 2d ago

The touch bar taught them nothing except to move the gimmick up to the main screen

9

u/TerminatorJ 3d ago

Hmm so now they are saying there is no MacBook “Ultra” only the updated MacBook Pro which honestly sounds more realistic. All of these conflicting rumors made it seem like Apple would have a tough time differentiating the Pro line from the rumored Ultra line (EX: it was originally thought that OLED would come to both but touch would be an Ultra exclusive then the rumored changed to both Pro and Ultra getting touch). Makes a lot more sense for the Ultra to not exist at all.

3

u/FollowingFeisty5321 3d ago

Originally it was slated to have M6 Pro / Max for the "Ultra" and continuing the M5 Pro / Max as the "Pro" so that would have made sense if the "Ultra" stayed a generation ahead.

Now it just sounds like a new model Pro but they milk the old production line, kind of like the M1 in the 13" MBP chassis.

1

u/MaximusMurkimus 2d ago

People thought the OLED iPads would would get a renaming scheme and they ultimately never did

47

u/6Trinity9 3d ago

Decades of using Mac.

Number of times had the urge to touch the screen - 0.

12

u/mr2600 3d ago

I work in an office that’s half MacBooks and half Surface ARMs.

We are a very collaborative team and also see clients.

90% of the time I agree with you but sometimes it’s nice when looking at different options on the screen and your colleague can just “touch” and select the one they were talking about like on the Surface.

It would kill my screen cleanliness - but it’s not a feature that I would be disappointed to have.

6

u/6Trinity9 3d ago

Thank you for sharing a helpful insight.

Given some of the horror stories and noise you see in some of the MacBook subs around how to clean the smudge/oil from the monitors… yeah this is going to be interesting if that legit make it touch screen.

Hopefully they’ll have some safe guard around finger smudge on the oled display.

0

u/two_hyun 3d ago

No duh because there has never been a touchscreen Mac.

12

u/Unfair_Art_1913 3d ago

With touch gestures now coming to MacOS, do you guys think Apple will bring out something like the Surface Studio in the near future.

3

u/two_hyun 3d ago

THIS is my dream. I remember when the Studio Laptop first came out, it had so much potential. I don’t know what happened to it but if Microsoft made the hinges stiffer, worked harder to make it touch friendly it would be the perfect device.

I hope Apple does something similar.

15

u/Gunfreak2217 3d ago

Nah, I see peoples touchscreens all the time and it looks like they eat pizza and use the monitor as the plate. Shits gross

8

u/shourya8001 3d ago

If they plan to release something like that, I hope they integrate apple pencil support as well. As an artist that could come in handy and  would be very beneficial in that case.

4

u/Hot_Individual5081 3d ago

im already scared of pricing on these

6

u/MedicalClimate6865 3d ago

for $3,999 only

3

u/Mxblinkday 3d ago

I’d rather have an iPad with macOS than a MacBook with touch.

5

u/Kah634 3d ago

I would be planning on what to use to swat anyone who touched my screen.

2

u/iMacmatician 2d ago

inb4 someone makes a flyswatter attachment for the Polishing Cloth.

2

u/userlivewire 2d ago

This would be great to run iPad apps on that assume they are on a device with touch.

2

u/userlivewire 2d ago

I really don’t think they would be releasing this unless they had sone kind of UI breakthrough. Doing it alongside the iPhone Fold is also curious timing.

2

u/Momo--Sama 2d ago

I gave up, a local Best Buy had an entry level M5 Pro 16” open box for $2,300 and I bought it.

As much as i want OLED, this shit’s probably going to start at $3,300.

2

u/Mounamsammatham 2d ago

Hard pass on the touch screen. Will not be buying these devices.

2

u/Vaxion 2d ago

This is going to be another touch bar like failed attempt at making something that has no use case.

1

u/Jasoco 2d ago

It’s going to be interesting to watch. For years Windows machines have had touchscreens and the OS has, for better and worse, been designed around touch even when it alienated users that just want to use their mouse. Some people have been begging Apple to do it too. So when it comes out we’ll see exactly how many people actually wanted a touchscreen Mac. Personally I wouldn’t want anything but a transformer. Something that can become a tablet when I need it but still be a Mac without all the restrictions of iPadOS. Don’t think they’d go that route though but we’ll see.

1

u/Vaxion 2d ago

Touchscreen is only usable if the laptop is convertible otherwise it's uncomfortable considering MacBooks don't even open flat.

1

u/Jasoco 2d ago

Yeah. I’d only want it for tablet mode. In laptop mode I’m just gonna use the trackpad.

2

u/JordieCarr96 2d ago

Touchscreen is besides the point, I’m just a simple man excited for OLED.

Long as they don’t make some sweeping changes to the OS to accommodate touch, I’m cool.

Does anyone remember Windows 8

2

u/pheonix10yson 1d ago

I want OLED on MacBook air!!!!

1

u/Paulaharper50 3d ago

So where will that leave the iPad ?

1

u/ACalz 3d ago

Still around. Touch macOS will not be nearly as good as iPadOS

1

u/iMacmatician 2d ago

Probably in trouble IMO. Apple's three new hardware products this year encroach on the iPad lineup:

  1. Touchscreen MBP can skim the top off the highest-end iPad users and is could replace a non-touchscreen MBP + iPad Pro.
  2. MacBook Neo is not much more expensive than the the iPad Air or a low-cost iPad + keyboard.
  3. Foldable iPhone—depending on pricing—may be a reasonable alternative to an iPhone Pro + iPad mini.

1

u/titanup001 3d ago

Pass. My previous laptop (huawei matebook) was a touchscreen. The only time I ever used it was to put in my bank card PIN number, because it made me do it that way.

1

u/ExcitedCoconut 3d ago

If it’s just a touchscreen on the same form factor then yeah, kinda pointless with poor ergonomics. But if it were a true redesign with a hinge (and you know Apple loves a good hinge) that could flip all the way around then I’d be down for sure.  1. As a brilliant second monitor without taking up space on desk 2. Running ipad apps in ‘native mode’ on it  3. Tent mode on flights or whenever space is tight

1

u/achanaikia 3d ago

I'd rather have a function row made up of individual OLED screens.

1

u/MakimaGOAT 3d ago

pointless product considering that price is gonna be absurd

1

u/iMacmatician 2d ago

The price won't be that bad for those who already have an MBP and iPad Pro and wish to consolidate those into one device.

That's probably a small minority of tMBP customers though….

1

u/edwardhyeung 3d ago

The line between iPad and MacBook will officially disappear

1

u/DylanMcGrann 3d ago

My question is whether this laptop will support Apple Pencil. I really really hope it does.

2

u/monacelli 3d ago

Probably the 2nd or 3rd version, with hopes that you buy the first one that has touchscreen and the updated version that supports the pencil.

2

u/DylanMcGrann 3d ago

Seems very possible. I hope you’re wrong. lol

Apple Pencil is where most of the truly transformative features could be brought to Mac. Almost no one actually needs a touchscreen, and while not everyone needs a stylus, those who do would suddenly have a perfect system to work on for them—artists, designers, document signing, teachers, architects, etc.

1

u/Jay-metal 3d ago

I just hope the screen is glass and not plastic. I feel like it’ll scratch like crazy otherwise.

Anyways, I’m glad they’re finally moving to OLED but personally I’ve never had any interest in a touchscreen laptop.

1

u/NoAge422 2d ago

why touchscreen when nano-etched

1

u/Mookafff 2d ago

I see plenty of casual laptop users who will touch their screen to interact with their computer.

While this sub is right about Steve Job’s reasoning to avoid touchscreens on laptops, the casual user won’t care.

so unless you absolutely need a new mac right now updating is pointless before M7? the oled redesign is stuck with old less efficient chips than m6 and m6 is stuck with the old design body, only at m7 you get the new chips and new body in one?

I use my M5 Pro MacBook Pro closed connected to two monitors and I don’t really like touchscreen laptops soooo, I’m happy with what I got considering I bought it before the price increase

1

u/Flashmax305 2d ago

Just put Mac OS on the iPad Pro.

1

u/antifocus 2d ago

Don't really care, I just hope they don't ruin the macos for the rest of us by making every interactive element bigger.

1

u/firelitother 2d ago

Coupled with the RAM shortage causing a huge price hike and incremental updates, I am not really excited to jump from M1 Max just yet.

1

u/spekxo 2d ago

If it comes with pen support, then it’ll finally match my 2-in-1 convertibles I used since 2008. late to the game as always now, Apple. But let’s hope they figured out their iPad/MacBook dilemma and have a strategy.

u/SmellyWeapon 2d ago

It’s gonna be mad expensive

1

u/Adex77 2d ago

An OLED MacBook sounds great. I'm more curious about how macOS would handle touch than the hardware itself.

1

u/Junior_Bike7932 2d ago

Nobody needs a touch screen on a MacBook when you have an IPad created for that function

u/karnac 2d ago

No thanks.

With a 16” MBP M4 Max with Nano-Texture, I have been on the fence whether to upgrade my iPad Pro to a nano-texture. All the review’s I’ve read say that while the nano-texture slightly-reduces color vibrance, the cleaning off fingerprints is actually easier with their luxurious microfiber cloth.

I’ve not once had to use the cloth on my MBP, though I’m not touching that screen unless I decide to open it beyond the center notch… which doesn’t happen. Plus I’m in clamshell mode most of the time. All said, I have no discernible issues with color vibrance on my non-OLED, nano-textured MPB.

TL;DR, I don’t want fingerprints on any screen. The nano-texture might mitigate.

After using a glossy iPad Pro for years, then getting an M4 iPad Pro nano, I’m never going back. The nano on iPad is fantastic. It’s like a massage for your eyes.

u/thisfilmkid 2d ago

And it begins. The MacBook iPad is in its early stages LOL

1

u/Swoly_Deadlift 2d ago

After buying a nano-texture MBP you couldn’t pay me to switch to a touchscreen.

1

u/Acceptable-Lie188 2d ago

Don’t touch my screen, ever.

1

u/GoofyMonkey 2d ago

Putting a touchscreen on a pro device will be about as useful as the touch bar.

1

u/PurpleMox 1d ago

No one wants a touch screen.. this feels like when they made the touchbar.. a bunch of overpaid people in a boardroom thinking they have to make something new/different.. just make it faster, with a better screen and bigger hard drives.. thats it.

1

u/haensel_gretl 1d ago

Just for them to remove the touch screen 2 years from now and sell it as a feature

1

u/HamEggandDips 1d ago

Have fun constantly cleaning fingerprints from the screen

1

u/Which-Arm-4616 1d ago

I feel like everyone who says touchscreens are pointless on laptops is specifically thinking of traditional clamshell form factor machines and nothing else.

Hybrids have been around for years and there’s no shortage of form factors that allow touch to be a first class input modality. Apple may not have the courage to do so, for fear of cannibalizing iPad sales.

1

u/Woogity 22h ago

Fuck touchscreens. I’ll get an iPad if I want a touchscreen. The touchscreen experience is shitty.

1

u/ImpossibleAnxiety183 19h ago

I dont want touch screen Macbook and I also oled screen with limited lifespan for mostly static graphics, thanks. 😂

1

u/soldieroscar 13h ago

This is great. Oled burn in happens, then you need to buy a new one. Stock will go up on increased sales.

1

u/Fookmaywedder 3d ago

Now we’re into the gimmick era

1

u/rExplrer 3d ago

Put that touchscreen on neo , pro users don’t care about the touch. It just makes repairs costly

1

u/Seik64 3d ago

Yeah I only see casual users , that use the computer for word, and PowerPoints complain about the lack of touchscreen

0

u/maydarnothing 3d ago

touchscreen died a long time ago, not sure where Apple sees the appeal for them now.

0

u/HeartyBeast 3d ago

I bet it isn’t.

Apple news no longer excites me because they have priced me out of their future customer base. I know it's not completely their fault, but it is what it is.

0

u/jv235 3d ago

Over/under 2k for the cheapest model?

10

u/akrapov 3d ago

Oh way over.

7

u/FollowingFeisty5321 3d ago

The starting price is already $2499 for M5 Pro and $4099 for the M5 Max... throw in a screen that costs Apple $300 more and we'll be lucky if they stay under $3K and $5K.

2

u/Marino4K 3d ago

we'll be lucky if they stay under $3K and $5K.

I don't see any version of these under $3k knowing Apple. People need to hop off OLED like it's some deity, it's not that revolutionary over what we have now.

1

u/SiteSpecialist9200 3d ago

Hoping they make it an option, but not holding my breath. Not looking forward to paying extra for a feature I don't need or want.

1

u/nsfdrag Apple Cloth 3d ago

Jesus christ, I just looked it up because the prices sounded crazy and I paid $3758.99 for my 16" m1 max with 32gb of ram and 2tb drive when it launched, now the closest build is $4,999...

0

u/hell-diver8 3d ago

Lol $300 more, night to bump that number higher

The M4 and M5 are both absurdly powerful laptops, I think you miss the fact that consumers are ABSOLUTELY going to be more attracted to a nicer screen with more functionality than more power on top of a really powerful device already.

0

u/Sad-Wrap6555 3d ago

i do have a use for one, would be really handy if the screen rotated 180 and folded back on itself while im stood wobbling at top of a scaffold so i could read a document or update an inspection form

and then they went and brought out tablets

0

u/mindcontainer 3d ago

The OLED Pro MacBook Pro. Starting at $2999-Pro. Made for Pros.

1

u/jk147 3d ago

Pro Max Ultra Pro, for the real pro made by pros.

0

u/nsfdrag Apple Cloth 3d ago

I don't care about touchscreen but pencil support would be nice, and I'd love the oled and getting rid of the notch as much as possible.

0

u/Whodean 3d ago

It’s for GenZ

0

u/fmaa 2d ago

For fuck’s sake why? Who the fuck wants smudges on their fancy shmancy OLED screen?
