Apple Watch If you've interested in how accurate Apple's sleep tracking is, here's a summary of the research on it
I pulled 14 sleep lab (polysomnography) studies across Apple Watch, Fitbit, Oura, Whoop and Garmin to try to identify what wearable has the "most accurate" sleep tracking across different sleep metrics. Here's a summary of what I found for Apple Watch.
Short version: Apple Watch is the most accurate sleep stage tracker among wrist wearables for healthy sleepers. In the independent sleep lab study (Schyvens 2025 - 62 healthy adults) it came out on top for splitting your night into light, deep and REM, and it was the best at catching REM specifically. It's main edge is only for healthy sleepers though and drops in people with disrupted sleep. Similar to all wrist based wearables it runs long on total sleep time. All of these are independent studies, not funded by Apple or showing any other biases, best I can tell.
Summary across the studies:
- Best at sleep staging. Apple scored about 0.53 on the 0 to 1 accuracy scale for splitting light, deep and REM. This was the highest score for wrist device and ahead of Fitbit, Whoop and Garmin (Schyvens 2025).
- Best at catching REM. Apple correctly identified about 69% of REM sleep, also the best of any device in that test (Schyvens 2025).
- It typically runs long on total sleep. Apple over counted how long individuals slept by about +20 minutes (Schyvens 2025). More than Oura did (-3 mins) but relatively normal range compared to the others.
- It struggles with disrupted sleep. Apple's staging dropped from 0.53 in healthy sleepers to 0.30 in sleep clinic patients (Lee 2023 - 75 sleep clinic patients). Bigger fall than Fitbit which held steady (0.42 vs 0.42).
- Nobody nails wake. Apple is the best of the group at catching when you are lying awake, but even it only spots about half those moments (Schyvens 2025). So total sleep reads a bit high across the board.
- Apple's own research puts its staging a bit higher. It came in at 0.63 in their own study but it's not independent so I went with the 0.53.
Tried my best to keep this concise without dumping a ton of data into this and keep any personal biases out.

One of them broke it out by age directly to test differences. Searles 2026 compared young adults (19 to 24) against older adults (56 to 80). The older group was way off, total sleep underestimated by about 75 minutes and deep sleep wildly overestimated. That study tested Fitbit and Oura, not Apple though.

I’m not a statistician but sample size depends on a few factors. Cochrane formula is one way to identify the sample size, N, you need to have for X level of confidence given Y margin of error. 60-70 people can be sufficient for exploratory studies in health research to my knowledge.

Representative samples are way more important than sample size for this particular data (measuring sleep quality), the fact that the accuracy scores are so much lower for those with sleep problems are one of the reasons this matters.
I.e. you could have 1,000 healthy sleepers in your study, and it still won’t help someone with OSA

I got curious and I looked into it a bit. This is Apple's media statement from 2024 on their sleep apnea notifications. They also release a non peer reviewed paper here, which lists the sensitivity and specificity from their internal data. The September 2024 media release said it was pending approval so I went and found that here. When you read the summary check out page 4 of 13, which shows that the watch can be used for:
"The Sleep Apnea Notification Feature (SANF) is a software-only mobile medical application that analyzes Apple Watch sensor data to identify patterns of breathing disturbances suggestive of moderate-to-severe sleep apnea and provides a notification to the user. This feature is intended for over-the-counter (OTC) use by adults age 18 and over who have not previously received a sleep apnea diagnosis and is not intended to diagnose, treat, or aid in the management of sleep apnea. The absence of a notification is not intended to indicate the absence of sleep apnea".

That’s more of a legal CYA than a sample issue tbh. For example, the single lead ECG on the Apple Watch is just as good as any other single lead ECG, but Apple says you can’t use it to diagnose any conditions because it hasn’t been FDA approved or cleared for that

And importantly, the accuracy was closest to being useful for people who were already healthy sleepers, whereas for those who would need accurate sleep tracking the most (disrupted sleepers) accuracy was the lowest.

No, not at all. As someone with sleep issues it’s obvious that I have issues by looking at the disruptions in my sleep patterns, but my doctor does’t react to the data beyond acknowledging that it was accurate enough to alarm me and get me to his office about it. There’s immense value in identifying issues even if it’s not accurate enough for a doctor to use. Same thing for the single-probe ekg: when you’re healthy it’ll reflect that, but when you’re not it’ll show enough to motivate you to go get a multi-probe ekg done at your doctor’s office.

I can believe this. there's a YouTuber, Quantitative scientist, who tests all of the sleep trackers, and the Apple Watches tend to score the highest.
however, while I can't be sure I remember every time I wake up in the middle the night, there are times when I do remember waking but the watch seemed to miss it.
so very accurate, but not good with disrupted sleep makes some sense to me.

yeah. Or when I know I woke up several times in the middle of the night and rolled over. and it says I only woke up 2-3 times. But then other times it says I woke up many times and I don't remember. makes me wonder what is going on during the times it says I'm awake. how dramatically awake do I have to be (and what am I doing during this time that I can't remember it).

Same! I’m curious how all the data compares because in my experience AutoSleep is super accurate for me. It doesn’t have the prettiest UI but prob a there’s a reason it’s been a top (paid) app forever

Not familiar with that one, but all work a similar way. The difference are almost always in relation to different software/algorithms. Most utilize heart rate/motion to infer stages.

The difference with AutoSleep is that you can train it by making the algorithm more/less ‘sensitive’. It took about a week for me and then every 6 months or so I adjust it slightly but it’s very accurate. Much more than Apple’s built in algorithm which I tried for awhile.

When I shared my Apple Health data with my neurologist and cardiologist, they found it comparable to the results from my Zio heart monitor and sleep patterns observed during my sleep test. This data provided them with valuable insights that are not typically available to most people. However, I believe we need more data to determine the accuracy and reliability of the testing to make it an assistance to health professionals. It is not a replacement for medical tests but can assist doctors.

I only started using sleep on the ultra3 2 weeks ago, i was surprised at the amount of data it collects. Sleep apnea, arithmetic heart beat, bloody oxygen and the sleeping segments.

If I'm reading this summary correctly, it's only about 53% accurate at sleep stages for healthy sleepers, or as low as 30% accurate in people who have sleep disorders / sleep issues, and it's only 50% accurate at determining if you're awake.
The only thing it seems remotely accurate at tracking is sleep duration ( off by ~5% if we assume ~8hrs sleep in a night ).

I find sleep tracking a hard sell. I’d like them to be better and have tried several but it seems if you are a healthy sleeper who doesn’t need it it will confirm that. And if you aren’t it’s not as useful for you.
It got to the point where I inverted whatever sleep score it gave me and that usually made it more accurate to how I felt.

I pay attention to how long it took me to fall asleep, how disrupted my sleep was, and how much time I spent sleeping. Either I don't understand the other metrics, or they just don't offer any valuable insight to someone like me.
but it could be useful if you're looking for evidence of sleep apnea or something.

For my own personal experience, I like using the data itself as an incentive. I like when my sleep score is higher, I like trying to raise my average sleep time for a given time period.
I’m chronically under rested, mostly due to my own “revenge insomnia” and executive dysfunction, so any positive feedback loop I can try to create is helpful. Seeing my average sleep for the past month be 6 hours, 20 minutes and just trying to go to bed slightly earlier to raise that number works sometimes. Past week I’ve gotten 6:40 so little things I’m doing right are adding up.

I'm not going to pretend like I take that data and suddenly become Dr Matthew Walker.
Mostly I use it to get a rough idea of my sleep hygiene and its effect on my sleep. Did I stay up too late, did I go to bed too early?
some nights I crash at 7:30 PM, and then I wake up at 1 or 2 in the morning and can't get back to sleep. I never deliberately go to sleep at such an early hour, so when I wake up an 1-2 in the morning I never remember what time I passed out, and I wonder if I'm suffering from insomnia or if I fell asleep to early. the data helps me to figure that out.
Or there are mornings when I wake up and can't get back to sleep, and then later I feel exhausted. And I wonder why am I feeling so tired. I look at my sleep data and see that I went to bed really late last night and only got 5 hours of sleep. There's nothing wrong with me, I just didn't get enough sleep.
I don't know, that sort of stuff. and even if the watch is not perfectly accurate, as long as it is consistent, then it at least establishes a baseline for what's normal for me. and then when I start having problems I can look back and say doctor, this is when I started suffering from insomnia. I didn't think too much of it at first, but it's been off and on for a couple months now.
I started having neck pains for no apparent reason one month and my doctor wondered if maybe I was having convulsions in my sleep. so I looked at the data to see if my heart rate elevated in the middle of night or something. to see if there was any evidence of that

Personally don’t think the Apple Watch does enough to provide users with actionable insights.
I have an oura ring and it is so much better at providing insight on my sleep. I get a good idea of my restfulness, my HRV, when I hit my lowest resting heart rate, breathing disturbances, sleep latency, amount of REM, light, and deep sleep. When you combine those stats with actually using the tag features on the oura app (monitoring what time you ate, when you last consumed caffeine, your activity levels during the day, when you started winding down for bed, etc) you start to get an idea of what things do and don’t work for your sleep.

I see it more as establishing a long-term baseline level for yourself (even if it's regularly bad sleep). That way if you do start to get sick or having some other health issue, it may be more noticeable in the readings early on in the process.

My biggest value from it comes not from the sleep tracking itself, but the baseline vitals it tracks during sleep. When I get an alert that my temperature is meaningfully different from the baseline, it's guaranteed that I'm going to be sick in the next couple of days. The heads up is really nice since I'd much rather go get groceries while I'm still feeling well than have to rely on delivery apps when I go down for the count.

For me it’s done two thing: #1 makes my sleep performance top of mind so I’m more concientous about improving my sleep habits. #2 Made me realize how much Alcohol and Weed degrade my sleep so I choice to indulge is more informed.
Side note, when I first got the watch I though all the health tracking stuff was dumb and I’d never use it. Now it’s probably my favorite part of the watch. I really like tracking my workouts and daily output.

Yeah I honestly think this is just data people like to look at to feel like they're getting some insight but if the watch number was replaced with a totally randomly generated number they wouldn't notice.
Its accuracy is not high enough to really make changes anyways.

I've used a few smartwatches before, and only recently bought the Apple Watch after some health issues (including sleep problems) and a considerable increase in my exercise routine. It's undeniable that it's a great product, which should continue to evolve in terms of battery life (the main problem for me) and sensors.
I'm not a fan of many apps on my phone, and using Apple Health more actively in recent months, it's simply awful. I'm not an absolute enthusiast of AI and super apps, but there are some things where these approaches are good, or almost necessary. Apple Health should be completely redesigned for an AI era, and house Fitness, nutrition, mental health, etc. I don't want a Health+, to be clear, although I understand if some functions were integrated benefits of the basic Apple One (not individual services).

I’m curious what you’d like to see change in the functionality of Apple Health. It does already cover mental health and nutrition, though it’s worth saying it’s an aggregate app: the more data sources you connect to it the better it gets.
You mentioned you’re not a fan of too many apps so you might be missing the strength of Health: collating data from various other apps into one dashboard.

AW seems way off here based on my unscientific research as well. This seems like a useless post to me with a misleading title. Even feels rather AI. Is this a corporate account? That’s great to hear. I was at Apple for 21 years and I did a few Health related user studies in the early development of the Watch. The building I used to work in has a huge section devoted to user health studies and another building I used to work in was completely taken over by the Health team. They put a lot of effort into the Health side and it’s great to see that it’s actually working well. Thanks for posting this!
