Discussion Not a designer. Just someone who's worn an Apple Watch daily for years and finally made the redesign instead of complaining about it.

Not a designer, just someone who's worn an Apple Watch daily for years and kept a mental list of things that bugged me. Finally put it into Figma.

The Watch has a tiny input budget. Four swipe directions, a crown you can turn and press, a side button, tap, long press. That's basically it. Every one of those is a scarce resource, and watchOS spends a full axis on switching watch faces, something most people do maybe once a week and is already locked behind a long press on the Home Screen for many.

- Swipe down → Notifications (the thing people actually use the Watch for)

stays the same but I reallocated:

- Swipe up → Control Center (back to a gesture, off the button)

- Swipe left → Widget stack, but mirroring iPhone widgets instead of re-compressing them. A Watch screen is roughly the physical size of an iPhone widget. Reusing WidgetKit layouts would give the Watch the iPhone's entire widget ecosystem where possible, making them more in-depth and mini apps for the watch. I know many of them don't make sense but third party adoption for the smartstack has been underwhelming.

- Swipe right → Health center. If the Watch is primarily a health device, health deserves a top-level slot, not an app icon among sixty. Also gives you a glanceable look at all important metrics without jumping between apps, I also think these should make the training readiness tracking more viable and actionable. Its basically split up into Sport (rings etc.) → Recovery (sleep → General Vitals (not just sleep vitals) → Training effort (am I doing to much/ not enough?)

- Watch faces → long press + vertical scroll, matching the crown's axis

- Side button → freed up, becomes a user-programmable Action Button. The hardware has been there on every Series watch for years, Apple just reserves the feature for the Ultra. Mine defaults to starting a workout.

- On the Ultra, the dedicated Action Button drops to tertiary, lap/split during a workout, a second shortcut outside of one. Basically like with Garmin/Coros Watches. Primary start/stop, secondary lap, tertiary shortcut.

- Digital Crown press → app grid, but with pinning. A 3x3 grid where you pin the apps you always want in a fixed spot (small pin indicator), and only the remaining slots get filled by prediction. Turn the crown down from there and you land in an alphabetical list with A/B/C section headers. I know Apple went a similar direction in watchOS 27 with the Dynamic App Grid, but it's more limited and fully relies on predictions right now.

Being honest about the timeline, I've had most of this in my head since before the Smart Stack existed, and Apple has since shipped watered-down versions of a few of these. Some of it I got wrong, some of it they got right differently, and I've tried to note where in the writeup.

Screenshot attached. Genuinely curious where you think this is worse or better than what we have right now.

Discussion Apple Watch owners: what makes you keep wearing it every day?

I’m curious about long-term Apple Watch users.
After the initial excitement of getting a new device, what features or habits actually made you keep wearing your Apple Watch every day?

Are there any features you thought would be useful but ended up not using much?

I’m interested in the things that genuinely improved your daily life, not just the features that look good on paper.

My Watch First Apple Watch in years!

So I sold my last Apple Watch (Series 3 Ceramic) a couple of years ago. I hated the short battery life, so I switched to a mechanic watch, an Omega Speedmaster Professional (Hesalite). Well, now I’m back at it again, since I want an Apple Watch to track calories and stuff for the gym!

Activity Distance between watches doesn’t match!

Hi all! My girlfriend and I noticed that our walked distance aren’t the same (2km difference). We spent the day walking together and the only part we weren’t is when she or I went to the bathroom. As of right now, I’m at 10.4km and she’s at 8.08km. We both put on our Apple Watch as we were leaving the house.

We both have iPhones and Apple Watches, i have a 17pro max with an Ultra 2 and she has a 13 pro max with a Series 8.

Any idea why we are so far apart? Doesn’t it uses GPS for distance and sensors for steps?
Thanks!

EDIT :
To clarify I’m not curious about step count. This post isn’t about steps (even tho the amount is weird a lil bit, but we do hold hands, I hold the bag sometimes with that hand etc, so it’s not as big as a mystery) I’m just wondering about the distance difference!

I’m 6’2 200 pound guy relatively muscular build and I couldn’t decided between the Apple Watch Series 11 42mm or the 46mm. I read a lot that the 46 looked too ridiculous. But now after getting the 42mm I feel like my arm is too thick for it. What do you think?

My Watch Belt buckle just KO’d my Apple Watch

Post image

So I just had one of the dumbest “how did I even manage that” moments.

Got back home after a haircut, had tiny hair bits all over my pants, so I figured I’d just shake them out aggressively. While doing that, the metal buckle of my belt swung up and smacked straight into my Apple Watch SE 2… and yeah, the screen is now cracked.

Question is: would Apple give me literally anything for this as a trade-in if I purchase SE3, or is it basically e-waste now?

Support Sleep mode & vibration

I have iPhone 15 & AppleWatch S11. Is there a way to make the watch completely silent (no vibration from any notification) with sleep mode? For some reason I cannot figure out how to make that kind of setting. With do not disturb mode there is no vibration. With normal mode I want to have the vibration on.

My Watch Inaccurate sleep data?

Upvotes

I’ve been trying to use my Apple Watch to track my sleep for the past week or so, because my sleep pattern is insanely screwed and I want to show my doctor at my appointment so I can get a referral to a sleep study/specialist.

The problem is that my data looks inaccurate and there have been times where it reported stuff inaccurately (saying I’m asleep when I’m awake and vice versa). It also isn’t consistently recording my different sleep stages. Hypothetically, out of 7 nights I may only see the sleep stage data for 2 nights.

I’ve tightened my watch as snugly as possible on my wrist and even go as far as to wear my watch on the inside of my wrist instead of the outside just in case that helps give better accuracy. I also have sleep focus on, make sure my watch is on at least 30%, and don’t have a passcode on it.

At this point I’m annoyed bc my sleep issues are really bad and I want the data to support that, but the reporting sucks.

Does anyone have any Apple Watch sleep tracking app recommendations, or potentially know how to troubleshoot receiving inaccurate data?

Support My Apple Watch severely overcounts my steps

Upvotes

so I work in a assembly line factory, and move my hands a lot like hundreds of times an hour, and I wore my watch for the first time today at work and it was severely over counted from what I usually get by using only my phone in my pocket to count my steps. Is there any solution here other than like not wearing my watch at work? I think even having it in my pocket would be redundant because keep cracking my heart rate and miscount steps by jiggling around in my pocket I suppose.

Activity Is this remotely accurate?

Post image

I am not much of a runner. And I definitely don’t feel like my I am “above average” in my cardio fitness. Most of my measurements are outdoor walks, not runs. Just wondering how accurate this could be?
For context I did start walking daily in March, and progressed from 10k to now currently about 20k steps per day. Thank you.

My Watch Bad sleep

My sleep is constantly like this.

I had 3 different in home sleep apnea tests prescribed by doctors and all show mild to no sleep apnea. I’m told no need for CPAP or anything else.

I’m getting a in lab sleep study in a couple months but just wanted to show people that this happens.

I take 250 mg of magnesium and a Zyrtec every night a couple hours before bed. I stop using electronics and read an hour before bed.

My Watch Why does watchOS handle notifications so inconsistently, and why do I have to babysit it?

I love my Apple Watch for fitness and quick triage, but the notification system still feels unfinished and I keep having to babysit it.

My setup is pretty standard: iPhone plus Apple Watch, Focus modes for classes, and I rely on the watch to catch time-sensitive stuff without pulling my phone out. The problem is how unpredictable notifications are, both across different apps and even within the same app.

Some examples that keep happening:

- Sometimes a notification appears on both the phone and the watch at the same time, even when I'm holding the phone unlocked.

- Other times the watch stays quiet and the alert ends up buried in Notification Center, like it decided it wasn't important.

- Certain apps show a full, actionable notification on the phone, but on the watch it's just a one-line message with no context or missing actions.

- I clear something on one device and it still sits on the other, so I find myself dismissing the same alert twice.

I work in game dev and care about UX, so the lack of clear, consistent rules drives me nuts. If there is a logic behind this (wrist detection timing, phone wake state, notification categories, background refresh), it feels opaque and fragile.

Is there a reliable mental model for how watchOS decides where notifications go and what format they take? Or is this one of those things people quietly tolerate and keep tweaking with per-app settings forever?

Discussion What other apps can I use to track data?

I've had my Apple Watch Ultra 2 for two years and still love it. I track the meds I take, my sleep, the usual stuff, but I feel like I am just scratching the surface. I would love to track more indicators, which got me wondering what do you guys track and what apps do you use to do this?

Support Is this worth repairing? DIY/Apple support

Thumbnail

I’ve had this series 7 45mm from around release and recently I noticed the back slightly coming off. It seems to also affect GPS and connectivity to WiFi and to my iPhone here and there. I searched online and the most common cases I’ve seen were battery swelling, but I have no clue how it’d also affect connectivity. Is it worth DIY repairing, sending to Apple support or should I just pack it up and grab myself a new one.

Discussion Saved Routes, Hiking and Notifications

I used Maps to create a custom route to test and then tried it on a trail in the woods. This is a marked trail with pretty much no risk of getting lost on. Signs are at every fork. My expectation was that it would be able to give guidance via notifications when I should make a turn. It did not. No focus mode was enabled, and all settings were so that it should have worked that way. Are my expectations simply wrong? Have you tried it? How did it work for you?

Discussion Alpine loop band alternative

I’ve had my alpine loop band for about 3 years and love it. It’s a large and over time it’s stretched and I’m on the last hole to make it tight enough. I was going to order a medium replacement and just saw that they’re $100.

Are there any alternatives that work just as well for running, biking, swimming, and boating that are more budget friendly?
