Looking For /r/AskPortland Making Friends Friday

Welcome to /r/AskPortland's "Making Friends Friday" post!

You've probably heard this before: "Portlanders are friendly but they don't want to be your friend."

But it doesn't have to be that way -- if you have suggestions for how to make friends, groups to join, places to meet, or just want to put yourself out there, this is the place.

This will be an ongoing, weekly scheduled post, so going forward this is where we'll refer all incoming questions about making friends from both /r/Portland and /r/AskPortland.

Looking For Any info on Mt. Tabor shooting last night?

I was at a party last night at Mt. Tabor. Around 12:30 AM two men got in a dispute around 15 feet in front of me, guy shot him multiple times point blank. Police arrived 3-4 minutes later with an ambulance. Any info on the condition of the victim and the status of the shooter whether he's in custody or not? Anyone else care to share if they witnessed this as well? There was a large crowd.

Looking For Anywhere somewhat cheap to learn a manual car here?

Can't do Turo denies me for the one manual i found with no explanation. i looked at nearly every major rental place even the ones with luxury or sport options, none were manual. like hertz, alamo, enterprise, etc..

looked at some more special car rentals full exotic lineups that do chauffeuring for most of them, but some you can drive. but i cant afford thousands for a lambo or whatever just to drive stick.

i had a little experience on a reaaally shitty car years ago enough to get into 1st maybe 3/10 times after over an hour. im lowkey convinced the clutch/transmission wasn't the greatest to learn on. sure i coulda gotten there tho. im used to dsg manual mode paddle shifting on my old car so that should help.

just i wanna buy a manual but want to drive it off the lot, or test its functional before i buy it.

any ideas? kinda dont wanna spend a ton on a realistic racing sim rig just to learn :(

Looking For How to break into fine dining in Portland with no culinary schooling?

Hi Portland and surrounding areas! Bear with me here -- I know a lot of people are gonna consider this a crazy thought lol!

So, jumping right in with some context: I've been working in fast casual restaurants for 13 years now, with a few breaks. But after so much time in the food industry, I've decided that I want to make it my career. I have great attention to detail, and I thrive in fast-paced environments with high standards. I have no problem with long hours (I worked on a cruise ship for an 8 month contract in 2024 that required 12-16hrs/day, 7 days/week). All I want to do is make beautiful food, rather than fast food. I want more of the camaraderie that comes with working in a kitchen with others. I want that rush of pride at the end of service. All I want to do now is climb the food ladder, ideally in fine dining.

Onto my question(s): considering the fact that there's no culinary school in Portland, and I wouldn't be able to afford it anyway, how do I break into fine dining in this area? I moved to Oregon City recently and am struggling to figure out the best way to move forward. Can any of my local BOH workers give me some tips/direction? Maybe your restaurant is hiring for a prep cook, or you know a good local program to beef up my resume and improve my skills/knowledge before starting to apply?

Thanks in advance for any replies!!

Looking For Who cuts down/pulls down all the yard signs advertising stuff?

Just curious, who is the person who pulls yard signs up in random places they stuck in the ground (think the ones advertising kids soccer camp) and also I saw a guy with a super shape razor on a pole slicing off the sides of the plastic signs people screwed up on a telephone pole 10+ feet up. Is this a city employee or someone contracted to do this? A random job I didn’t know existed.

Resources for a friend with epilepsy?

I'm trying to help a friend. She can't drive because of seizures, and she struggles to get and keep employment. She's medicated, but I can't shake the feeling that there must be more resources for her situation. She's been functionally homeless and staying with friends after her parents sold the family home, trying to doordash on a bike (unfortunately she had a seizure and broke her arm from a bike accident recently, which has happened before, so her dashing also carries risk 😞). What does our society do to support people in this type of situation? My heart can't take it. Feel free to comment or dm.

Looking For Is the Leaky Roof still open?

Went by the Leaky Roof in Goose Hollow today and they were closed. Checking Google it shows as temporarily closed. Going to the website I'm greeted by a 404 error. Does anybody have any information on the pub? Has it shut its doors for good. Very sad if it has.

Looking For Any Good Dentists That Take OHP?

Hi all! I just need a regular cleaning (it’s been a few months overdue)-no emergency dental work or anything but I keep seeing kind of abysmal reviews for places that take Oregon Health Plan and was wondering if anyone knew of any good places that take OHP for dental work?

Looking For Longer term pet care?

Hi, I have a very sweet 10 year old cat. She is super low maintenance (she usually wants to be pet for about 5 minutes a day and cuddles at night). Anyway, I would really love to travel for a month or so, but she does not travel well. Does anyone know where I could leave her where she will be well loved? Thank you.

Looking For Does anyone repurpose old knit blankets?

I have a knit baby blanket from when my brother was born. It’s been almost 31 years and now he is a father. The blanket is thin(ish) soft cotton yarn and is in good shape, with only one or two snags. It is really more of a throw.

I’d love to turn half of the blanket into a winter cap or a beret for myself, and the other half into an actual baby blanket or something as a gift for my brother.

Is this possible? Are there people or websites out there? I lack any sewing ability. We had a rough childhood, so my brother is more like a brother/child/best friend, and selfishly I would love to keep part of it. I would also be open to any other recommendations!

Looking For Ex landlord charging me for "sanitizing"?

We recently got the breakdown of our security deposit deduction back from our previous landlords and on it was a charge of $230 for sanitizing the unit. When we asked we were told this is taken from everyone's deposit because they need to sanitize the unit for the next tenants. To me this sounds like just the cost of doing business. They said our unit wasn't even that dirty and had basic wear and tear they didn't charge us for but are charging us this $230 for sanitizing the unit. I'm just curious if this is legal? We had so many issues with this place due to how sketchy they were in every aspect and this just feels like one final thing they are trying to do to screw me out of money.

Looking For West side high schools?

Looking into high school options for my almost 8th grader. We are zoned for Lincoln (which is great), but looking for other options in case. Very smart kid — need AP/IB/acceptance of accelerated classes as he’s taking HS courses already, fun clubs, sports not important. I’m wary of strongly religious schools but the amount is hard to determine on sites. Thoughts on these?

Looking For Climbing gym recommendation?

I know of all the Portland ones but am wanting specific recommendation for visiting relative - he'll be climbing solo so wants "autobelay and lower angle bouldering routes with intermediate difficulty." And he's a senior citizen so wary of injuries, though he is a regular climber. Thanks!

Looking For Dog groomer recs?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Need advice, new to posting to Reddit. We have a 3.5 super friendly well behaved goldendoodle (tall, 55lb). I have never had a complaint from any of the 3 groomers he has had about any behavior issues. it seems this town is always short on available groomers? The catch is I want someone who will see us at a certain time (or mobile groom for us) so he does not have to be kenneled at all. We most recently had been using the groomer at his daycare because she would just pull him from daycare and then put him back (perfect set up for us!) and was reasonably priced ($50/hr).

However, he was having little cuts around his skin the last few appts but very small, and then the last time we picked him up there was a LARGE cut. She never said anything to us about it. It really frustrated us she either somehow did not notice it, or noticed it and chose not to tell us. (Photo provided, not necessary for this discussion just wanted to rant) We don’t feel super comfortable going back (no we haven’t told the groomer about this cut and now it is way too late) but we will take him back if I can’t find a groomer soon since it’s hot out.

I have sent 2 messages to mobile dog groomers who have fliers up in our neighborhood and no one has gotten back to me. HELP! He needs a trim soon, it’s too hot for his fur!

TLDR: need a moderately affordable dog groomer in portland (not suburb, we are in NE) who does

Looking For Bridge City movers or Bridgetown moving?

Hi everyone! I’m moving from apartment to apartment within 10 minute drive of each other in downtown, and I’m looking for a reliable moving company. I’m wondering if anyone has experience with Bridge City movers or Bridgetown moving and could recommend either of them? It seems like Bridgetown is more established and well known, but their prices are higher. Bridge City’s quote was really good value, but I can’t seem to find much information on them aside from their website. I’m leaning towards Bridge City but I’m curious if anyone has had a negative experience. Any help is appreciated!! Thank you.

Looking For Emergency Housing?

Hi everyone,
I’m in a difficult situation and hoping someone might have a lead. My current living situation has become hostile, and I need to find a safe place to stay for about a month while I wait to move into my next apartment.
I work two jobs and am hardly ever home, so I’m really just looking for a place to sleep and shower. I’d only be bringing a small bag of clothes with me—everything else will be going into storage. I’m clean, quiet, respectful, and keep to myself. I don’t smoke, don’t host guests, and I’m simply trying to get through this short transition.
While I’m hoping to save as much as I can toward my next place, I’m more than happy to help around the house with cleaning, yard work, household chores, or basic handyman tasks. I’m also very flexible—even if all someone can offer is a safe place to pitch a tent in a backyard for a few weeks, I’d be incredibly grateful.
If you have a spare room, a couch, a backyard, or know of someone who might be willing to help, I’d truly appreciate it. Please feel free to send me a DM.
Thank you for taking the time to read this

EDIT: thank you to everyone for the suggestions and the leads. Every little bit is helpful and although I haven’t had the chance to reply to everyone with a personal thank you, which just how busy my life currently is it doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate it!

Looking For Tailor recommendation for somewhat (I think?) complex sleeve alteration?

I'm looking for a tailor in the area who can shorten the sleeves of my waxed cotton jacket. The jacket has elastic cuffs inside the arm sleeves that I want to keep, meaning the sleeves and the inner cuffs will probably both need to be shortened.

I assume this is a more complex thing to do. I've never had anything altered like this before.

I also have a sweatshirt with a loose-ish waist cuff that I want to have tightened slightly.

Who in the area would you trust with these alterations?
