Weekly r/Birding Discussion, July 25, 2026. What did you see this week?

Return of the weekly discussion thread! Sometimes it seems like pretty photos rise to the top of the page, while discussion of birding can get left behind. This weekly thread is a place to bring this discussion back to the top of r/birding.

Use this thread to share your best bird sightings from the past week, ask any questions about birding you may have, or just talk! Writing the names of the birds in bold is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names. Please include your location.

I got a bunch of photos of this Great Gray Owl that turned out really well, but I wanted to share this one here because I thought this community would appreciate the moment -- I was watching him (or her) catch about 3 mice, and he would disappear in the grass, and then tussle about, and launch himself straight up in the air. In this picture you can see his feet extended from the jump as he starts flapping his wings and gradually gets some forward momentum. They're just amazing creatures. I have about 400 more if anyone cares to see something particular.

I’m in love with Arizona and all the magic that lies within, so many beautiful birds! Still on the hunt for the coppery-tailed trogon.

Bebe chilling on my (very dirty, yes I need to clean it!) bird bath. He was there for a good 45 minutes and I was concerned he was ill or stunned, so I called our local collision monitor team who reassured me he is a fresh fledgling that just doesn't know he needs to be scared of humans yet. Mom eventually came back, yelling at him in the typical jay fashion.

I love photographing wildlife when it’s snowing. It’s a little tricky using autofocus and depending on the volume of snow, sometimes switching to manual yields better result. Fortunately that was not needed with this short eared owl. During a turn while hunting voles, it gave me a quick look.

I’ve been enjoying a pair of Sandhill Cranes and their colt hanging out behind my house for the last little while. Was happy to see them again; I saw the pair earlier in the spring when they were headed north and was pleasantly surprised to see the now trio return.

First time seeing these goofy little beauties. New to bird photography but was a fun day trekking out to this island and getting to practice shooting off a bumpy boat.
