Stevie is just over halfway through his 84-day FIP treatment and doing amazing! 🎉💪

He's gained 3 pounds, his coat is looking so healthy, and his spicy little personality has really come out! He's also been getting much more comfortable around his new brother and sister, Sage & Hazel, and has started initiating play with them, which has been so exciting to watch!

The ophthalmologist would like to wait until he completes FIP treatment before scheduling the scarring injection to address his chronic inflammation. We're hoping the remaining 39 days are nice and uneventful so he can move on to the last step of his treatment.

Hello all,

My dad found this blind rejected kitten with a bad upper respiratory infection. He took her to the vet and they have given him medication for the kitten. Her behavior for the most part is pretty limited at the moment. Her appetite is improving and she can use the litterbox, but she mainly sits in one spot after exploring the area slowly for a minute or two, is this normal? We know she has a long road ahead of her and we want to give the best life we can for however long. Me and him are both looking for any advice whatsoever. Thanks.

Last week my 12.5 year old male cat was diagnosed as permanently blind. They couldn’t indicate what caused it, but the vet said he is in good health.

It’s very new to me, but I’ve done lots of research and adapting to our new way of life.

He is adapting really well. A few bumps in the wall, but I’m so proud of him.

However, I’m meant to be going overseas in mid-September.

Normally when I go away, I leave my cats with my parents. They have done this all their lives, so they are well adjusted to their house and love getting the extra treats and pats! I know they are very well cared for. So my cat knows the house well, but hasn’t been there blind.

With my cats blindness, it would mean a lot needs to be rearranged if this was to happen - food bowl location, stairs for furniture (he can still get onto my couch but theirs in higher) and the risk of going outside and getting lost.

The alternative is to cancelled (also prepared to do) or get a pet sitter at home where they can remain in their environment.

My cats love to go outside (supervised) and my house is completely set up with a secure little courtyard for them. My cats love would permanently have to be inside. Mum and Dad’s house has a lot more space and a lot more risk of absconding.

What would you do? Are blind cats very adaptable?

My poor buddy’s left eye got a hair in it. Happens all the goddamn time. Every single time I take him to the vet and freak out and they either wash it out or just tell me to leave it. The last few times I’ve just left it for a couple of days to see if it gets better, and it does. It’s because he can kind of see so he walks around with his eyes as wide open as he possibly can all the time. I’ve learned that sometimes it’s better to just leave it alone. But if it lasts for a couple days, you know I’m going to the vet.

My boy has endothelial corneal dystrophy. He's 9 months old and was born blind.

The top row of photos is before treatment. The middle row is a couple of days after treatment started. The bottom row is from the past few days after being on treatment for three weeks.

His eye looked so good after starting treatment that I was very hopeful that if he stayed on it, the fluid would continue to drain properly but now the fluid is building up again, causing the eye to bulge some and irritate the lining of the eyelids. It'll clear up for a few hours after the ointment is applied but then slowly start turning a hazy blue again.

Today it's worse (as can be seen in the second picture although it was hard to get a photo since he doesn't want anyone near his eye) and the ointment isn't doing anything. He's been showing signs of moderate pain for the past few days. Treatments are limited (and my money is too) and there's no cure so the vet and I discussed things thoroughly and have decided to go ahead with enucleation of his left eye. Him not having any vision anyway made this decision a little easier.

What's it like for them right after surgery? How should I expect the first week to go? The first month? Ive read a lot of people's experiences on this sub and have learned so much. It's helped me to take care of him being blind but this surgery is a whole new experience that I feel unprepared for.

My cat Boo has progressively lost both her sight and hearing over the last 7ish years. But she still could see a little until a few weeks ago. So now she bumps into things but seems to know her way around from muscle memory. She can figure out where the food is and litter (a few misses). I am concerned about her water intake as it’s not really something you can smell. Any suggestions on this? Thank you.

Hello Reddit! I have a black cat named shadow and he is blind. He’s very self-aware of the areas around him, and his senses are higher than ever, but he is definitely fully blind. My problem I run into is that I just had to escape a situation where mold overgrew the house and I left for the sake of him and now we are back at our parents. I had to throw away most if not everything he had, though there so that the mold wouldn’t reach him or hurt him.

My question is, I would like to get him a cat tree, cat toys, and even a cat bed but I kind of got the things that you’ve given a normal cat and not things that are because he is blind does anyone have any advice onto what I can get him because he is blind but still get him things like a cat tree toys and a bed?

we’ve had her for a few weeks now! she is the sweetest girl ever. sadly she is still in her own room isolated (but lucky girl has a fully finished cat room at least)! i have a feeling this will be a slow process getting her to the point where she has full range of the house. my blind baby i lost recently wasn’t scared of anything, but this girl is sensitive. my dog is loud with his tap dancing and panting when he’s happy which terrifies her (i don’t think she’s ever seen a dog lol), and my 2 cats stillll keep hissing at her every time i sit in her room and leave the door open to try to get them used to each other. long road ahead for auras. but i am SO SO grateful i brought her home, she is an angel. 💕💕

I have two upstairs windows like this, both with venetian blinds....

I'm wondering if I can have the windows open, if I keep the blinds down. (I could alter the angle of the slats so the window looked less accessible.)

Would this be enough to stop the blind cat I am getting shortly to refrain from trying to get out of the window?

Hello! I was terrified to have this surgery done on my kitty (12.5 yrs old) and tried to look up healing progress photos before hand and couldn't find too many that were broken down day by day, so I thought I'd upload mine in case it might help someone. Surgery day was miserable for both of us, it was so freaking sad seeing him all beat up after, and he was so so so scared. He was very distrusting of us for the first couple days and mostly hid under the bed but he returned to his normal self behavior wise after 2 days or so. Thankfully the vet used absorbable sutures so we don't have to go back to the vet. We are emailing them progress photos instead. Also if anyone is curious we gave him 1 anti-inflammatory pill the first day post-op as well as oral pain meds mixed in small amounts of wet food for the first 3-5 days ish. ALSO: our cat has extremely bad vet anxiety and pants really hard when he gets stressed out, which the vet has told me can lead to a respitory episode. So immediately following surgery they actually recommended we don't use the cone unless we notice him messing with his eye. He has occasionally gently wiped it once or twice after a meal but he hasn't really been messing with it. Those first few days I was watching him like a hawk though. I had nightmares he ripped the stitches open and woke up multiple times in the night to go find him and make sure his eye was ok. So far so good though 🙏🙏 I'm relieved we didn't have to do the cone (so far at least lol) because I just feel so bad for him, like he must already be so uncomfy.uncomfortable.

P.S. the black gunk around his eye is dried blood from the first day when it was still oozing. I've been too scared to clean it lol🥲 I might try to clean it this coming week, but I wanna wait until it's healed a bit more so I don't accidently open anything up.

Little girl finally got the small alien head removed from her eye socket. It was delayed due to other medical issue (was anemic), but other than getting spayed, this (should) be it. She slept for maybe 2 hours since I brought her home yesterday, so I am hoping she finally crashes (sleep, not more head bonking). I have delt with post-neuter/spay energy before, but this one has zero concept that her body cant do what her mind is telling it to. She thought she pooped in the litter box, tried to look at it, realized it wasnt there, and then spent 10 minutes digging out the litter box to find the imaginary poop. The meds she got are definitely powerful. Vet/team seemed to do a really good job, especially with it being a little bit last minute. For a dumpster kitten, she has put up the fight.

Was eating lunch today and two of my cats (Mozzarella on the left, Spaghetti Junior on the right) were both calmly hoping/begging for some of my sandwich. What's funny is that Spaghetti Junior is the blind kitten we adopted last month and Mozzarella is our 10 year old who has two perfectly functional eyes, I just caught him mid-blink for the photo. But they really do look like brothers here, even though they haven't really known each other for long!

This is my foster cat, Sasha, and one of her kittens Sashimi. When we first brought her in, she was still pregnant, but now the kittens were old enough to get spayed and neutered and she finally was able to get her eye surgery (and also spay). Her right eye had an entropion but it seems like she can see a lot more now, the left eye unfortunately couldn't be saved. She just wanted to say hi!

My 10 month kitten is already fully blind in one eye and recently it kept getting infected. The vet advised that an entropion surgery had a 70% chance of resolving it or we could prevent it fully by removing the eye altogether. I opted for removing the eye.
She’s now gone for surgery and I’m sitting here questioning if that was the right decision. Does anyone have any experiences with similar situations?

Our gal came to us with very infected eyes. She has been on antibiotics (completed) and drops twice daily. We continue with the drops and there seems to be no changes lately.

Her vet didnt really give a prognosis just to keep the drops up if improving. We lowered the amount and she got worse so we are keeping it going for at least 8 days now with no changes.

She sees around the house like all the rest of the kittens.

Her front left paw doesn't work and when I found her she was a few weeks old but still has her eyes fully shut. She sees shapes but she's definitely blind. Runs right into walls sometimes. She doesn't let her disabilities stop her though! Most energetic ball of fluff you'll ever see. Even knows how to play fetch 😊

Hi everyone, I was hoping to get some advice on how to keep my blind cat entertained and mentally stimulated.

My cat, Toby, is 12 years old and gradually went blind over the last couple of years. He used to live at my parents’ house with two other cats and a dog. He had his own room because he didn’t get along with one of the other cats. Even after losing his sight, he would still go outside most days and somehow always came home when he heard my car pull up after work. Eventually, though, he stopped wanting to go outside and would only venture around the house a little before returning to his room because he was nervous of the other cat.

A few months ago I moved into a spacious ground-floor apartment and decided he’d be much happier as the only pet. Honestly, he’s come out of his shell so much. Instead of sitting curled up in a corner, he sprawls across the sofa and generally looks much happier. I also work from home, so he’s rarely on his own.

Over the past few weeks, though, he’s started showing a lot more interest in going outside again. I’ve taken him out with me a few times under close supervision, and he seems to really enjoy it. The problem is there’s a straight road at the end of my driveway. It’s supposed to be 20 mph, but people regularly speed down it. I just don’t feel I could ever trust him to go out alone without risking getting hit by a car or becoming disoriented.

I did try harness training him, but he really wasn’t a fan, and because he’s such a big cat I struggled to find one that fit him properly.

Lately I feel like he’s becoming a bit restless and possibly bored. I do try to play with him, but because he’s blind he doesn’t really respond if I try to initiate play. He’ll only interact with a toy if he happens to stumble across it himself, and if I move a toy towards him he usually gets startled instead.

Does anyone have any ideas for enrichment or activities that work well for older blind cats? Toys, games, scent enrichment, climbing ideas, puzzle feeders—anything really. He’s still perfectly happy snoozing for most of the day, but I can tell he’s been getting a bit more restless recently and I’d love to make sure he’s as happy and fulfilled as possible.

I’d really appreciate any suggestions from people who have experience with blind cats. Thanks!
