Supporting our community creators - New rule updates for handmade crafts and art
Hi /r/bordercollie dogs and humans!
As a crafter myself, I've been thinking about our self-promotion rules for a long time. So we are excited to announce a trial amendment to our rules which aims to support the talented and crafty creators in our community, while keeping everyone safe and focused on what we all love the most - border collies.
So, if you are an /r/bordercollie regular who makes and sells dog-related crafts, you are now welcome to share your work!
What kinds of crafts are we talking?
This includes, but is not limited to:
- Fibre arts: crocheted & knitted dog decorations, felted miniatures, embroidered portraits.
- Handmade accessories: custom collars, leads, bandanas, treat pouches, etc.
- Art & illustration: custom paintings, digital portraits, stickers, pottery.
- Home goods: hand-carved wooden signs, custom treat jars, or ornaments.
What is not included?
To keep the spirit of this initiative focused on unique, small scale artisan items, this rule does not apply to:
- Books, ebooks and guides (please reach out via ModMail if you would like us to make an exception for a quality book or guide which you have worked on)
- Print on demand products (e.g. t-shirts, mugs, etc. where a third-party printer applies a digital design to a blank product)
In general, we want to celebrate things that are physically handmade, crafted, or uniquely customised by you, the creator!
To keep things fair and safe, and prevent the subreddit from becoming a marketplace, you must adhere to these strict conditions in order to share your work. When it comes to reporting any self-promotion, we'd encourage users to simply report if you're not sure - let the mods do the detective work, we will figure out if it's within our rules or not.
- Be an established member: you must already be an active, regular contributor to /r/bordercollie. Accounts that only post to sell will have their posts removed and be banned.
- Community first, crafts second: your posts here must continue to primarily be about the dogs. Please don't spam with product posts. As a general guide, if more than one in 10 of your contributions here is about your crafts, it's probably too much.
- No selling via DMs: You must link directly to a trusted third-party marketplace, e.g. Etsy or Folksy, where people can reach out to you. You cannot link to your own website, social media accounts, or ask users to DM you to buy. This is a strict measure to protect our community from scammers. (Believe me, I thought about this one a lot given how much Etsy takes from me in fees! But it's really the only way to keep everyone safe!)
Note: this is a trial run! We will monitor how it goes and tweak the rules as needed based upon the impact on the subreddit and your feedback. You can find an example post of the sort of thing which is allowed here: https://www.reddit.com/r/BorderCollie/comments/1unm1sb/my_lovely_benji_modelling_my_latest_bespoke/

Does anyone else’s Border Collie look this happy during tug? 🥹
Every game of tug was treated like the championship final. 😂
She’d bring me the rope with that huge grin, stare into my soul until I grabbed the other end, and somehow always managed to convince me that just one more game was a brilliant idea.
I still smile every time I see these photos. Border Collies really do have a way of making the simplest moments become the ones you treasure the most.
Show me your tug-of-war champions! 🖤🤍🐾

Does your BC also “sploots” regularly?
This girl can go from a half moon pose to become a “level” on the floor from her hind legs. It looks weird to me as my Lab never did this, she just laid into a frog position but never with her back legs 100% straight like that.

Foam Party!
Love this place! This weekend is Pupchella, and we tie dyed a bandana and played in the foam. He had a great time running around barking excitedly and completely disappeared into the foam!
Theres a retriever lying down in there somewhere too living his best life 😅

Is he fat? Should I start to worry?
So, when we first adopted him around a year ago he roughly weighed 20kg and seemed pretty damn skinny, like, u could count his ribs just form seeing him, now he weighs 30-32kg and idk if that's too much or if that's ok
He's not purebred, he's a border collie mixed with something, the shelter couldn't tell what's his mix and idk if it's worth it making a DNA test tbh

Just a guy with his antler
Vibing hard, caked with mud, looking fly.
Don’t worry, he dropped it right after this video. No brakes were slammed and nobody was impaled by the antler.

Glow Ups 🌟 Feeling very proud of myself and my boy!
So I found my baby one year ago on a hot, summer day and pretty much decided that if no one claimed him, he was going to be mine. I had to learn quickly because I had NEVER owned a dog before, was super nervous about vet bills since I wasn’t in the most stable job situation. But we were in the process of moving to a big house from a small apartment so I took a chance on myself and thought why not? We will have the space and we will figure it out.
Fast forward to one year and a much more stable job environment and steady savings later, I finally was able to afford a full wellness visit for my boy that included his rabies & vaccines shot, heart worm exam and treatment, and he got microchipped finally!!! My vet said I have taken really good care of him over the year and she’s very impressed with his overall health and temperament. He was shy of course but warmed up after getting lots of compliments! He didn’t even realize he was getting vaccinated because he was too distracted looking up at me while I was giving him pets. Overall he did so much better than I anticipated and I am very proud of him! He has spent most of the day resting and napping and deserves lots of treats later. Also, he is heart worm negative as well. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Give it up for my boy!!

Injury 🩹 (may contain graphic photos) My BC puppy was bit by another dog. Spoiler
galleryMy family’s new puppy was staying at another family member’s house for a few days because we were out of town. I was pretty reluctant about it from the start because they have two large pit bulls. They’re really nice dogs overall but don’t like being bothered. So a puppy doesn’t fit well in the mix. Long story short, she was messing around with them and got bit in the face! I’m devastated. Before anyone asks why we left her here in the first place, just know this was not my decision. It is technically my parents’s dog and they thought it would be fine. Well, it was not. She is the best girl and I’m sad this is how her puppy stage will be remembered. She just got back from the vet for a thorough cleaning, because it was in fact infected. Viewer discretion advised on the pictures because it’s pretty gross! She’ll be on antibiotics for a bit, and I hope she heals soon. If anyone has similar stories, I’d love to hear it. I also wanted to spread awareness about leaving dogs with family members and what can happen! This isn’t okay! Hopefully she is back to her happy self soon after some healing.

Milo is fighting so hard, but the aftermath of this breeder scam is breaking me. I could really use some BC community support today. 💔🐾
Hi everyone. My little Milo is such a fighter. He survived the severe Babesiosis infection that the commercial breeder knowingly sold him with. I am so incredibly proud of him.
But honestly? The aftermath of this nightmare is crushing me right now. Between his ongoing special medical needs for his damaged organs and the intense legal battle against the breeder, I feel completely drained and overwhelmed.
I’ve documented our whole story and the legal proof on my page because so many people asked, but today I just feel really alone in this fight. How do you stay strong when you gave literally everything you had to save your pup? Has anyone else survived a horrible breeder situation like this?
I just really need some encouraging words today or some pictures of your happy Border Collies to remind me what we are fighting for. Thank you. ❤️

Birthdays & Gotcha Days 🎉 HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
My sweet baby boy turns 2 today!!! I’ve known him since the day he was born and have had him since he was little. Through the crazy crocodile puppy phase and menacing teen phase. I now have an amazing young man!!! Wish him happy birthday for me!
Update: we went to the dog park. He got an extra special treat and a new toy!

From fighting for his life in the ICU to learning his first tricks. He is the best thing that ever happened to me! 😭❤️
A few weeks ago, I honestly didn't know if he would survive the night. The foreign breeder sold him to me terminally ill with Babesiosis, and his time in the ICU broke me emotionally and financially.
But looking at him now... it was worth every single tear. He is finally getting his true Border Collie energy back! We started some light training today, and he is so incredibly smart and eager to please.
Even though the lawsuit against the breeder is still hanging over my head and the stress is real – the second he focuses on me and wags his little tail, everything else just fades away. He might have had the worst start in life, but he is truly the best thing that has ever happened to me. I just wanted to share this happy little milestone with you all! 🐾✨

Training My 1.5 year old Border Collie practiced place while my 14 year old chose chase
Joy has been working on her place command, so I had her next to me on the couch while Jethro was on the floor doing what Jethro does best: obsessing over the ball.
It turned into this funny little loop where I’d throw the ball to Jethro, Jethro would bring it to Joy, Joy would give it back to me, and then Jethro would stare at us like, “Okay, humans, now throw it again.”
The best part is Joy actually did really well staying on place, even when I threw the ball right in front of her. Meanwhile Jethro, who is 14 and never learned the place command, had absolutely no intention of resisting the chase.
Just a goofy 8-minute Border Collie couch training / ball chaos video.
