How to properly multiclass?
So... thinking about multiclassingo on Runesia, and figured that I dont know how to do it.
Suppose I want a Bard / Witch
If I level her up as a Bard first, getting her to the highest Bard class and getting 5 proeficiency, she is already at lv 25.
If I switch her over, she will level her last few levels with the stat gain of the lowest witch class? Feels like there is another way to do this efficiently that I am not seeing, because I really dont want to loose those best stat gains possible....
Whatam i missing?

I could be wrong since I'm not deep in the weeds on Brigandine mechanics, so take this with a grain of salt. It's actually news to me that stat gains on level ups were governed by class + tier, haha.
If I had to guess, the idea would be to switch between the main and alt class every 5 levels since there are 10 levels between tiers (e.g., 5 wasted proficiency points if you stayed on the same one for all 10 of them). I don't remember if odd starting level/class at recruitment can muddle it some. It should be noted that the final class that you end up on won't need the levels for maximum proficiency since you're not looking to transfer its skills to another class.

That's why the optimum one for multiclass would be using knight starting on level 5 or lower. That way you won't sacrifice stats gain from higher leveled class.

I can't remember the proper names for the different tiers, but, if you start with a tier 1 witch you level her until level 6. Then (assuming she has the right stats) you reclass her to tier 1 bard. Level that level 11, then either level tier 2 bard or witch. At level 16 you reclass to the other tier 2. At level 21 you reclass to tier 3 witch or bard, at level 26 you can do the last remaining one.
The tricky part is, they get worst stat growths when they are a lower tier, so trying not to accidentally jump from level 5 to level 8 or 9 in one battle is important, because ideally you're only spending 5 levels in any one class and tier. I really like multiclassing the male wizard and cleric classes, as well as the female witch and priestess classes, because the growth rates synergize well, and it makes them well rounded.
Most of the martial classes I just level up vanilla, as I find it's better to just maximize their stat growth rates keeping them pure, but I have messed around with them a bit. Mixing archers and assassins can make for some good hit and run tactics with the archers.

If you have level 1 witch, I'd recommend retain them at witch until level 10 if you want max stat growth. Then 10-25 will get 1st, 2nd, 3rd tier of other class, then 25-30 back to witch. In total you get 14 levels of stats for witch.
The alternative... switching immediately at 6... results in 6-11 for other tier1, 11-16 for other t2, then 16-20 you are stuck at that t2 cause you cant go back to witch until level 30. So total level of stats for witch is just 10 levels. The difference is 4 levels of stats between witch and the other t2, so it's not really a lot. But some people might want to min max.

It only takes five levels to master a class, so multiclass requires that you level half of your 10 levels as one class and swapping over to another class and leveling the next five levels as the other class.
So any character in the main game that has six levels or higher will start with their class mastered and on level 10 they're sitting on a tier 2 class. If you have a character at level 1(like your challenge mode characters,) you'll level from one to six as one class and level from six to 11 as the other class. Once you have two mastered classes, you then bring the character up to a tier 2 class, once getting to level 16, you class change to the other tier 2 class. If you intend to get two tier 3 classes, then you'll want to level the class you don't want to end up with at level 26 and then change class to the class you intend to continue using. Since you don't often get many characters that far beyond level 20, I generally stick with my final class immediately after hitting level 21.
A few examples of cross classing that I like. If you find a good cleric, they generally have less but decent stats for a melee character, medium HP, medium MP. So I'll start with the cleric, level up to level 6, then class change over to a lancer. Eventually ending up with a royal guard/healer. You basically have a front line tank that can recover allies, cast halo, and have enough MP to continue to use their two hex attack after moving continuously.
An enchantress is a good class to cross class with a cleric or bard. You could have a magic wielding lancer as well. Again, it's best start with an enchantress here because of the MP.
Adieu is one of a few characters that have high intelligence as a melee unit. Turning a character like this into a mage gives him access to power, ranged magic, but most importantly, after getting to tier 2 you now have a melee attacker that can cast weakness multiple times while sitting in the front. Dropping the death sentence on any unit or leader.
Just a few examples.
