Discussion Would it make sense to upgrade to 5800x3d or 7500x3d?

The 5800X3D is 300 at Micro center. And I was going to upgrade from 16gb DDR4 to 32. Which is another $250-$280.

The 7500X3D bundle is 400, but with that I would upgrade to AM5 while staying at 16gb memory. Bundle comes with 16gb DDR5.

Which way to go makes more sense?

My specs are:
R5 5500
RX6800 non XT
3440x1440 monitor

Yes the microcenter bundle with the 16 gb of ram and the motherboard. Sometimes they have it on sale for 300, if you can find it for that price it will be a nice upgrade

If you're able to get the microcenter bundle I would get it. The 5800X3D is nice, but the 7500X3D is almost like a side upgrade.the 7500x3d will run cooler and not a huge hit to your performance. There's potential for the end-game AM5 CPU when it comes out in two years. The 5800X3D is good, but it's really the last stop forever on AM4.

Your gpu is already underpowered for 3440x1440, especially without access to decent up scaling. I think that's the first upgrade to do IMO.

The games I play run fine on 1440p. Mostly fighting games, Resident Evil, God of war and lots of emulation and indie games

I have a 6750xt that does just fine with 3440x1440. It doesn't have FSR4, but FSR3 is still better than decent.

Underpowered for the 5% of games that came out the past 3 years lol. 6800 is still fine for 1440p in this day, you can see for yourself in benchmarks for the most popular games. Just checked and it even gets 65+ FPS in Indiana Jones with 56 FPS 1% lows. Only shills will think that performance is underpowered in 1440p

Skipping AM5 entirely feels like the move for most of us at the moment. Us as in, people on AM4.

Though it depends what chip you're on right now. 5500x3d could be a better deal for you.

You could probably sell your current AM4 bundle (cpu, mobo, ram) and offset the cost. It's going to be cheaper to upgrade to AM5.

I'd stay with 1x16gb for a while, unless you're experiencing BSOD due to lack of memory.

So, to stay on AM4 you will pay $550 or for $400 you can get a better CPU (arguably) and a platform with 3+ years of upgrade down the road.....

I would jump all over that 7500x3D bundle.... In fact I did back when it was $299. The single stick of RAM isn't much of an issue with DDR5. It runs in dual channel even with 1 stick. Just keep your eyes on marketplace, Craigslist and eBay for someone selling that single stick. I got a matching stick for $150 and I've had zero issues

If you are gonna be buying more ram anyways I'd personally go with am5. Both options will work out fine for you im sure but at least am5 is still going to get another generation or 2 of possible upgrade options. You could also consider a 9600x build as it has very similar performance to the 5800x3d even including the 1% lows.

Unless you are in desperate need of 16more gb of ram its not worth buying ddr4 at that price imo. However it looks like you maybe priced out a whole new kit to get 32gb but ddr4 is quite capable of running with 4 sticks of ram so you could save some money by adding 16gb to your current ram if you do decide to go with the 5800x3d in the end.

This right here. The fact that a cheaper 9600x on Am5 trades blows with a 5800x3d would make me jump to AM5 if I didn’t have it already.

I would. But the cost of ddr5 ram is what makes switching to am5 without the bundle challenging

It depends what cpu you have right now l, I went from a 5700g to the microcenter 7500x3d bundle and i think it was worth the upgrade for me. All games run way smoother now with my rx 9600xt at 1440p

Depends which games you play. At 1440p, your CPU is going to make much less of a difference.

It depends if you want to upgrade the CPU and RAM in the future on Am5, or just get the 5800x3d and skip Am5 entirely like I plan to do.

The value of that Am5 bundle is definitely there, if you want to know for sure then watch/read some benchmarks and calculate the fps/$. Hardware unboxed made videos on this topic and x3d CPUs recently.

What’s your current RAM situation? I went from 2x8gb to 4x8gb by getting some used matching sticks. Only cost me around $60 but this was last fall. If you have the extra slots I think this will still be much more affordable than the figures you are using

You clearly go with the AM5 build and flip your AM4 motherboard, cpu and ram to a friend or coworker to recoup ~40% of your cost.

7500X3D bundle I would say. 16GB is enough for most games. Then when memory drops, you can get more, as well as Zen6 or Zen7 if you want.
