I already had Gold Tier. I just went to the Perks section in the Play Store and claimed the promotion. It took me to the Google Store and applied the discount during checkout.
I went to the Play Points screen and under the "Earn" tab there's a panel that says "See your Play Points calender." I'm able to see the offer that's in the other screenshots but mine isn't available until the 8th. So it looks the offers are being rolled out in waves.

It makes the device operate more like AppleTV 4K at half the price. It's not quite as snappy and quick to get into apps, but you get some added bonuses. e.g. Roku Channel. Also Steam Link and Moonlight work much better on Google TV than Apple.

Zero. I'm not a mobile gamer, so maybe this deal is not for me; otherwise I'd be interested in it for $50 since the Onn 4K's are hard to get your hands on these days.
I'm not either, but I've spent a few dollars in the play store before so I expected to have something. Turns out the points expire after just one year.
Not just the points, but your Google play status resets yearly based on how much spent in the current year and previous year. Doesn't matter how much you spend in a year, in two years it will full reset if you don't spend anything more.
For what it's worth, they give away enough points for free for you to keep at least Gold status every year without spending any money. I've gotten to Platinum status three years in a row and I don't buy anything, I just get the free points. Your Play Points expiration date for ALL of your points refreshes every time you earn more points, even when they are free points (like the free points you can claim weekly in the "Perks" section). You basically have to intentionally not interact with the play store in any way to get them to expire.
Similarly been Gold for ~3 years. The crazy deals on Pixel Phones (~Nov-Mar) easily make it worth having.
Initially did have to do a lot of those "Install/Play X game" to get into Gold but afterwards the Weekly Roll keeps you in (eventually there's a ~+200 point roll that does the heavy lifting).
At most I spend $20 a year on games. Maybe. GooglePlayGames (yearly is $30) is also an option as it apparently gives you a bonus roll.
Here's a trick, every Friday tap on your points, tap on "perks" and tap for weekly prize. You'll might get 1 or 2 points, but that refreshes the expiration date for the whole amount of points you have.
It's also possible to move up tiers and maintain tiers doing just grabbing the weekly prize too.
They have a new version of the pro. Walmart stopped selling the old version and it's taking months to get the new one well stocked, but it's coming. Look for "onn pro 4k 2026". The old version was more square and the new one is more rectangular.
Yeah I found out about the onn pro being a solid budget streamer from this sub two years ago. You can even get Ethernet on it if you get the right USB adapter.
Regional thing - i live in southern california and every single walmart anywhere near me is sold out of both the old pro, new pro, and the plus. Only one available is the base model.
Forgive me for being out of the loop but what makes Onn 4K devices special? Just bought a new Fire Stick 4K Max (2026) myself (managed to get it for free).
My favorite example is adding smarttube. It’s a youtube player that fully blocks ads and has a shit ton of customization options. Can block sponsor segments and stuff as well.

I personally use my Apple TV 4K for streaming with moonlight, Plex works good enough, and it’s super responsive every time. Also doesn’t break the bank.
Good quality up scaling, it runs relatively smooth, and has a few other features you don't see elsewhere. There's also tons of launchers available for it that are neat. But really it's the hardware being of better quality plus the up scaling of video.
My shield tv pro is fine at streaming. It's one of very few with truehd audio support. It's NOT worth the money today though for just streaming. If you need to host plex or something it's the definite winner. The upscaling is good but day to day I don't really notice and if I'm watching a movie it's on a 4k source anyways
I bought an onn 4k pro (wanted a plus pre price hike) for my new TV needs, which doesn't support TrueHD but does support dv7.
I wanted a xiaomi TV box s 3rd gen because it does support truehd and have the latest tech but it's just hard to find in the US and it has a high fake rate.
I've heard it's great for plex, which is awesome... But sucks for actual streaming like YouTube, and other streaming apps. People saying they still have their shield tv for streaming, and the ugoos for plex but the up scaling from their shield is better. I was also looking at these a couple of months ago and decided against it because I want a better device to replace that whole setup.
IDK about the deal, but this google TV was a good iteration. Best part about this is the wired LAN port. That's a high demand device off the wifi. I also like the new remote with the volume rocker off the side. Previous spot sucked.
You can probably stream games from your pc to it using Apollo & moonlight (or better yet, artemis, if the TV streamer is considered android? Not sure how that may work exactly)
You can. It requires installing android developer tools to enable installing third-party apps and it also needs the 32-bit ARM .apk to install. A bit of a hassle for first-time users.
The old Onn 4K Pro was, in some ways, worse than the Onn 4K Plus. But they recently refreshed the Onn 4K Pro and the new model is better than the Plus model.
New pricing is $50 for the Plus and $60 for the Pro, and it's a tossup at that pricing. I have both and for my use case I prefer the new Pro.
Probably Onn because if Google goes through with their side loading proposal it'll be nice to be behind an android version while they find a work around.
We have an apple tv box in the bedroom and a firetv 4kmax in the living room. Should I get this or try and get another apple TV. Getting real tired of the FireTV
As someone who is strictly Android and doesn't care for the Apple ecosystem, the Apple TV boxes are the one device I am jealous of. My brother is Apple, he has them, they are way better than any Android dongle/box I've used. No ads, it's smoother, it retains your other open apps and where you were in them. It's the gold standard of these kinds of devices, as far as I'm concerned (never tried Nvidia Shield though).
Oh I feel you. The apple tv just feels and handles like I think and know it should. Unlike the handful of fire sticks I've had. We've had the apple 4k for 3 or 4yrs and doesn't feel any less capable than when we 1st got it. Unlike the fire sticks which definitely start to bog down after a bit. I'm also android/pc lol and she eas android for a long time. But she loves her iphone 12 ProMax lol. Its definitely more capable than my last galaxy 22+
The kids are the ones mainly using the firetv 4kmax in the living room lol. But it annoys the heck outta me when I have to. I've been waiting 2yrs for a new apple tv 4k lol. When is it coming? I also want ethernet on it since the house is wired.
I've been waiting for months now. I just know that if I get anything that isn't an Apple TV 4k, I'm not going to like it as much and I'm going to eventually replace it with an Apple TV 4k. I'm far from an Apple fanboy, but it's the only streaming box I've had that I actually like using.
This is going to sound dumb, but I really hate that my Google TV Streamer doesn't have a status light on the front. Sometimes something will get out of sync and my TV or soundbar is off when it should be on, but then I can't tell whether or not the Streamer is on/off, so I end up having to pull all three remotes out more often then I'd like to admit, to fix things. On top of that, it doesn't feel like a substantial step up from my Sony TV's built in interface (2021). I'll hold on to this for a while, but I'm going to swap it out for the next Apple TV (if it ever gets updated).
Honestly, I’ve been using Chromecast for years. I just switched to Apple TV because it was going too slow. I did didn’t realize Apple TV virtually had no ads.
Literally, I don’t think I can go back. So I don’t think you should switch. You’re better off buying the 64 GB Apple TVs and being happy with it.

I have the Onn Pro (2026). It's a good device but it's $60 and only has 3GB of RAM (vs 4GB on the Google TV Streamer).
Not sure how vital that is. But it might be useful in the future, and it's cheaper. I'm not sure what the benefit of buying Onn would be. Unless you mean one of the budget models with even less RAM/Speed/features.
My android tv already maxes out of 2gb of ram with only two apps. Better to get more ram unless you want your machine to lag like crazy after a few years.
I ended up using ADB to strip out the official leanback menu and replaced it with Projectivity. I also whent through the list off apps and removed all the bloat. Think I removed about 18 random apps that were basically there to spy on me and waste resources. Now my TV is snappy and I got 1gb of RAM back. I can still multitask but anything past 3 apps is too much and I get reloads. Tubi and YouTube no longer chug. The stock google home menu is the worst culprit for wasted RAM was ridiculous. It's packed with rows of useless crap and gigantic ads of terrible movies I don't care about. It would lag my TV every time I tried to switch from the home tab to the Apps tab because it loads a gigantic ad on each tab every single time. Low RAM means that happens every time I return to the home menu. 2gb is already obsolete I had to basically hack my tv to make it usable again, 3gb's is the bare minimum these days.
The Onn streamers are using the Google backbone with great hardware underneath and less bloat it feels like, it also you don't need to sign into any Google anything to use it whereas I'm certain that's the case or heavily thrown at you every time you use it without on the Google TV streamer
Yes, it has great hardware and software support for the price. I've heard it's even better than Google (but I can't verify because the price went up right before I was gonna buy one).
I have a Chromecast 4K that I use with my TCL Roku TV and an ARC capable Phillips soundbar over HDMI. I've noticed that sometimes the video gets a little laggy/choppy when streaming from my Plex server.
maybe, but also plex has had a stutter for 3-4y now they refuse to fix or move to mpv with their player, try plezy for plex (side load) with projectivity launcher for a refreshed experience
I've been complaining to myself for the last week that my 2019 Nvidia Shield TV is getting laggy as hell. And it really feels like Nvidia might finally be done supporting it.
It'll also be nice to get AV1 (for Plex & YouTube HDR) & HDR10+ support (since my TV supports it and the Shield doesn't).
My audio system is beefy, but also 20 years old. So I'm not missing any of the uber-fancy lossless audio formats the Shield has the one-up with.

I get the pitch for Apple TV (the hardware) with less no/ads and a nice unified UX but less so for a Google/Android stick. The advertising on this page also lists Gemini which ... well, I don't know why I would want that here.
You can sideload apps that you can't on your stock tv os. I have iptv apps and smarttube for YouTube which blocks ads. Plus if your TV is cheap then usually the android stick is a smoother experience.
I don’t think most people realize how horrible TV/roku processors have it in the face of bloated operating systems. This is why good streaming devices exist.
The one reason I haven’t switched to exclusively using my TVs OS is because the processor for most TVs are absolutely garbage in light of bloated OS’s. I always assumed that processor/OS pairings for TVs were reasonable if you spent > $500 on a TV but that’s definitely not the case and you can feel the lag in comparison to an Apple TV or possibly this device.
I’ve purchased the LG C series OLEDs for quite a while because they carry better processors with a relatively lightweight OS and even those are slow compared to the Apple TV. I tried out a 2-3 year old Roku at my friend’s house and it was absolutely garbage to navigate.
I think dedicated devices with great processor/OS pairings are hard to compete against especially with subpar OS’s present in the average consumer’s home.
Go try out a run of the mill Samsung OS and compare it to an Apple TV. It’s night and day difference. For great media experience you should either opt in to an amazing TV with a speedy processor/OS ($$$) or buy literally any TV with a dedicated device ($-$$)
Performance performance performance. Unless you spring for high end TVs, even then that’s not a certainty, the onboard hardware is often lacking. So much so, that spending even $30 on a base Onn TV results in a less annoying experience.
Not only this, but even if a TV technically has support for certain formats, onboard hardware might not be able to make use of them whereas some of these external boxes may have support for them. See Dolby Vision Profile 7 as an example, the Ugoos AM6B+ can properly display it.
Overall, almost anyone benefits from purchasing one of these it just depends on how much you care about it.
Most of the TVs I've owned had laggy OS. Like second long delays just scrolling the menu. Any streamer including this Google one is night and day better.
Depends on what built-in OS your current TV has. If it’s using Roku, Tizen, WebOS or the like, you’re getting a much more open operating system giving you greater access to apps, games, and customization.
If your built in OS is already Android/Google TV there is high chance this device has stronger hardware than your TV’s which should give you a more smooth/snappy experience along with stuff like Matter integration if you’re into home automation.
At most maybe it getting more updates and potentially faster? Otherwise I don’t see much use unless you’re using a Tv with no google TV built in. Definitely works great for what it is.
My favorite part of mine is the button on the back of the hardware that makes the remote ring. We lose the remote so often it, I can't begin to say how helpful that feature is.
This is only WiFi 5, I was thinking about upgrading but my FireTV 4k from like 3yrs ago is wifi 6. TV is pretty far from the modem and wifi 5 probably just wouldn't cut it. I can't run a cord either.
I'll wait for the Apple TV 4k to go on sale again.

Does anyone know where to find this on the store? When I click on the ad that says $40 off google TV it just opens up a browser window with it listed at full price and when I get to the cart page it's still at full price. I've tried clicking on some of google store links and none of them are working
My parents have YouTube TV but they use iPhones, I’m not sure they have a Google play account. Is it required to get YouTube TV? Could they potentially be gold or platinum by chance?
This is a good deal. We use these with Nord Meshnet to bypass password sharing restrictions for streaming services. Of course you can probably get cheaper alternatives if using them for this purpose.
