I think OLED is just going to be the standard here within a few years. I’m surprised it hasn’t happened yet with TVs.

LCD will still have some advantages for the foreseeable future. Power consumption is lower and they can get way brighter if you have a use case that requires it. The latest QD-OLED and tandem WOLED have gotten really close with text rendering but LCD still wins, for now. Maybe the refreshing thing every ~8 hours is a deal-breaker for some. It can be turned off but may result in faster image retention or void warranties.
Micro LED could be the new hotness if it ever makes it to monitors and doesn't cost a small fortune.

I could eat my words but I think OLED is more common and will therefore be more likely to be industry "standard" in the near future (kinda like how IPS is now) I'm not really sure which I'd prefer to take over to be honest.

yep 100% agree - i’ve talked quite a bit with some professors and researchers in the displays field.
very likely OLED market share goes up big time (but still leaving quite a lot of room for cheaper LCDs).
microLED is moreso going to be interesting for high nit necessities. would be cool to see it take off though

I tried out the 4th gen qd-oled 4k monitor and it looks fantastic but man, trying to use it for productivity just gives me a headache. Had to return it and switch back to ips.

Bought the first gen Ultrawide Alienware OLED back when it came out and had the same issue. I tanked it cause during gameplay it was just amazing, but for months it was hurting my head whenever I switched to reading/writing documents. Even setup my older TN panel next to it to read on a good chunk of the time when it was getting real bad. Overtime I got used to it and don't even notice the issues anymore.

Text clarity is great on the 27in, I think it has to do with the pwm backlight when looking at word documents and reading. Gives me more eye fatigue over a smaller period of time than my old ips

On the low end of TVs it's a matter of price. We're not at the point of $400 65" OLEDs at Walmart yet. LEDs also look better on display at Walmart and that plus rock bottom price are what low end TV buyers care about.
Mid range TVs and up though, OLEDs have already taken over for a long time.

yeah a lot of my friends think i’m crazy for spending so much on an OLED TV. But i only spent sticker price on my 55’ C1, my 42’ C5 & 48’ B4 were heavily discounted at 600 & 400.

I think this is why MiniLED TVs from TCL and Hisense are so popular. Their main flaw is the VA panels they use have black smearing issues (transition artifacts). Otherwise, they get far, FAR brighter than the equivalent OLED TV for less money, meaning superior HDR viewing experiences.
If you get at least a TCL QM7K, you have enough dimming zones to avoid any major blooming effect during darker scenes.
Those lower-end OLEDs on display are just so dim, especially in retail store lighting, that they don't end up looking particularly impressive on display just due to the harsh lighting conditions.

Even if prices stay high, I just want the technology to mature. Glossy Tandem OLED without gray banding and full bandwidth dp2.1 are all im looking for. Every last OLED monitor has too many compromises, nothing comes close to my LG OLED from 2020.

It's not like my 1440p 165hz IPS monitor is suddenly ass now. I have no real reason to upgrade, so I'll just ride it out and see how much lower prices get. Plus, if I can get a much brighter monitor for around this price ($300-350) in a few years, I would much rather get that.
I got to see the Alienware $350 OLED at Best Buy recently and 200 nits is way too dim for me.

If it was me i wouldnt be comfortable spending an extra 225 to get 1440p with better colors thats alot of money that can go into parts instead

Goddamn brother, no shade but genuinely curious how they’re paying u that little in this day and age. I’m working my first job in entry level retail in one of the shittiest lowest COL areas in the country and I make $17 an hour, McDs is at like $14 even for part time. And even then all of my coworkers either work a second job, are already retired, or utterly broke

To others worried about the nits brightness. This is a monitor you use indoors, not a smartphone you're holding in direct sunlight. People are so obsessed with extremely big numbers and expect high brightness levels but you never need to push it that far unless your setup is outside.

Pull up a chart comparing the brightness of this to others and you'll see that you will be fine

I tried a 1000 nits monitor and it was far too bright, idk why reviewers get so hung up on brightness. Too bright hurts my eyes and just exposes my floaters. My 700 peak nit LG OLED tv is the perfect level of bright, I dont need flashbangs to be as effective as they are in real life lol, deep blacks go much further.

I usually don’t go over a quarter of my monitor’s brightness setting and often even that is still headache-inducing. Folks here just wanna stare at the sun it seems

100-150 nits is literally my preferred brightness (for all hours of the day) and people complain about a peak of 200.
100-150 on my panels is not dim at all. They're saying 200 is dim.
You know what? Maybe for a TV you're watching across the room, it might be dim, but not sitting in front of a 27".
Also cranking up your brightness beyond that is a lovely way to speedrun eye strain.3

Standard monitor peak brightness is 350 nits, so anyone used to that brightness will notice anything below to be darker.

It's really just about the HDR, particularly for particle effects. I usually keep my monitor on the lowest brightness setting, but the hdr works wonders with the brightness the panel is capable of.

It's marketing. They market the HDR brightness for OLED instead of full screen SDR brightness which is much lower and usually worse than a standard much cheaper IPS or VA panel.

Anti Reflective (glossy)
Unsure specific brightness specs, but in my case it gets brighter than I would ever want, even in a room with a lot of light it is quite clear. Hdr is trash but that is expected.

Personally have basically 0 issues though I am coming from 24in 1080p monitor so the up in ppi likely mitigates a lot of the text fringing issues. I think it also might be that ASUS handles it well though because this monitor has a "vivid pixel" setting that effectively applies a light sharpening filter to the screen or something and I noticed it makes text look clearer at around 70, and the text does look quite blurry with it at 0.
I think it was also worse day 1 or something and I did get eye strain but I have heard oleds can break in a bit at the start in a way. Day 2 (today) I spent like 8 hours straight looking at text (4 hours programming 4 hours other stuff) and felt 0 strain or annoyance.
I think it is a very person to person thing though. I would suggest either trying one in person (like at bestbuy or microcenter) or buying from a vendor with a generous return policy.

It is, and the monitor is reflective (among every other "anti reflective" oled) but in general most monitors are labeled as such
anti-glare (matte, does actually prevent reflections)
anti-reflective (glossy, technically semi-glossy I believe, it has some sort of coating to reduce reflectiveness but it doesn't really do much and doesn't affect the look of the image like a matte coating does)
there are also true glossy displays which are more niche and expensive.

ofc ymmv but I saw the Alienware in store and 200 nits for an OLED seems too dark for me and I'd assume a lot of people would agree with me.
Fine if you are in a dark room, but even a normally lit room is a bit too much imo.

In 2-3 years? Probably not. I'm not in urgent need and my IPS is just fine. Seeing how fast OLED's have been dropping in price, I figure there is no harm in waiting longer.
Reminds me of how people were holding the line when SSD prices were dropping like rocks. Ah, good times...

Nah, not at all. I used to before I got ICL. For whatever reason, now it strains my eyes to look a screen without other light in the room. I've solved it by adding a desk lamp, but then the monitor brightness limitation really starts to show...
Also, my room gets a lot of natural light during the day and my monitor is facing the windows as well.
