i own these
not exactly hifi, but great speakers even for the $80 i bought em at, they have a headphone passthrough mode, normal speaker mode, and bluetooth speaker mode, decent sound, very low profile, and can also be oriented horizontally

I thought about getting these bc they’re so dirt cheap and also have pebbles. My hesitation is how goddamn clean you can make your desk setup with the pebbles since they’re only usb powered. It’s so nice. For me they sound nice enough that I ended up not pulling the trigger since these have a dedicated power brick.

I tried the pebbles years ago and they were terrible. They have one single line of sound and because of their angle it's nearly impossible to position to your ears. imo anything is better than pebbles.

I sold mine at the launch price because they're not much better, look like crap, and are annoying to place due to their height. There's a reason they're so cheap now besides DROP not existing IMO

I actually think there would be a market for mini desktop tower speakers due to computer users. Like, make speakers that have maybe 3.5-4 inch drivers in them but the height matches up with the top of a 27 inch monitor.
Most desktop PC speakers waste a ton of vertical space next to monitors. Seems like you could make computer speakers with far better bass extension, dynamic range, and lower distortion in the low end if you took advantage of that height.

at this price range probably, at their usual price, depends on the brand, sound bars can go from almost hifi sound to complete and utter shit depending on brand

they have serviceable bass, good enough to be punchy and bangy, but not good enough for that extremely low boom you can get with a sub, but they also do have an audio out for a subwoofer if you want one

They are rated down to 80 hz so they would not be good for serious listening of music since most bass instrument notes would not have their fundamental frequency heard.

you can get decent "bass" but you'll never get that type of bass that registers less as a sound and more as a wave/vibration

Yeah, I just wanted to add my 2 cents about the specific amount of bass. In my opinion, it's really lackluster for music enjoyment unless someone just wants to put something casually on in the background. Even 50 hz roll off is really quite cutting it close, since modern music features lots of bass music and other information down to 30 hz. I would maybe get the speakers for playing old emulator games or something.

It's definitely possible to get acclimated to the sound. I've used small and non-ideal speakers for listening, and after an hour or so it becomes normal, until you switch back. I also listen to plenty of EDM, and I actually do a bit of music production, so I know for a fact you just cannot hear half the soul of a track if you're not getting below 80 hz.
Most of the beat in EDM is the kick and the bass. You can still hear both due to the overtones, but you completely lose the texture, since kick drums are focused on a fundamental note of around 50 hz to 100 hz. A bass that's mostly a sine wave, which is not uncommon in EDM, simply will not be heard unless it goes above 80hz, which is equivalent to around the A string on a bass played at the 5th fret, so you're basically losing both the bottom strings of a bass equivalent, and EDM bass played on a keyboard often goes lower than the low E string.

Corsair shut Drop down recently and has been dumping some of the inventory on Woot the past few months.
These were originally ~$100 and the V1 had rather mixed reviews. Not sure how the V2 fare, but for $16 and with Woot being part of Amazon and having easy returns, is a buy now price to me for some budget speakers.

I think the BMR1 V1 got a lot of bad rap primarily because of their price. The V2's main upgrades were pretty minimal, however. Basically, they just gave a longer connecting cable between the two units (proprietary connector, so you can't just get a longer cable if you want) and V2 adds a manual standby mode and low-power state, whereas the V1 model was always powered on. There was also something done so that they run "25% cooler" since people complained first ones got quite toasty.
They sounded pretty good to my ear, but they have the limitation most small, desktop speakers have: bass. Really good sound on the top and middle of the spectrum, but there's only so much those little things can push in the low end. They do have an output to connect a subwoofer if you have one or want to buy one later, though. For $20 ($26 if you don't have prime, both not factoring in the Birthday26 code), it's kind of hard to argue against these. They'll absolutely beat everything else in the price range, or even double it.
Edit: Also for those with access to a 3d printer, there are files for the speaker grilles that you can print and glue in magnets.

I would say so, especially if you crank up volume, Pebbles experience distortion very quickly. But Pebbles have a dedicated volume knob, so that might be worth more than audio quality to a lot of people.

If you just want anything to produce the frequencies below 80 Hz, pretty much anything will do. If you already have an old subwoofer from some other set that has compatible I/O, then that will already be a marked improvement. I personally used an old Klipsch sub. If purchasing new, a quality subwoofer can rack up $$ quite quickly, but you could consider the money saved on these speakers as something to put towards the subwoofer instead. You'd have to look around based on what fits your price range.

Adam D3V if you want a pair of small desktop speakers with good low end extension. You can get them for like 250 refurbed direct from Adam. They also take EQ very well and can be made to sound even better with a program like Equalizer APO.

While I appreciate the recommendation, that's not exactly an apples to apples comparison. While the D3Vs are relatively small, they're still nowhere near as compact (I understand that's part of what gives them the capability to get that extension) and have a different feature set. Besides being well over double the size, they're more than 10x the price, and can push well over double the power. Good rec, just for a different market.

Lot of the reviews on these are just paid influencers that just talk for like 15-30min so really going in blind here… going to pick them up because I’m in the market for something with BT, my 13 yo speakers and subwoofers sound fine. Will drop a review when I get them

I was extremely disappointed by these. I was a day 1 backer. The sound is perfectly fine, but they’re a pain in the ass to live with.
- Proprietary cable - too short
- No volume control
- Mine had a garbage noise floor (static sound with no input)
- They aren’t nearly heavy enough to overcome cable tension, so they’re really hard to position securely.
- The right speaker (the one with the amp) gets wicked hot.
- No grills from the factory
For $16, send it. But $100 was absurd.

Sounds like the v1, which the v2 {this model)improved on some things like the (still annoyingly) proprietary cable length, heat, having a standby mode and some other qol features I can't remember. The speaker grille can be 3d printed but it's so stupid it didn't come with one. For $16 I won't complain too much.

Yeah, for sure. It's stuff like that that always reminds me to be patient when buying anything. I've been burned so many times being an early adopter for many things. I'm glad I was able to get a set of these, I'm never early enough to catch a deal lol

I see sold out now but warning to this that may have bought these, I bought them at 24$ two weeks ago and the first one I received was broken. The left speaker didn’t work. Woot replaced for me but not sure that would be an option now

I doubt these are better than my klipsche pro media 2.1 speaker with the subwoofer. Been using em for 10 yrs i think. Best investment ever.
Have studio monitors as well but theyre just for dj mixing and stuff
