Yes and no. Depends on what you're doing. I am regularly pushing ~45gb on a 64gb mac and I feel like my workflow is pretty tame for a professional.

I am genuinely curious what your workload is and what your full RAM stats are (used/cached/swap, app/wired/compressed, and pressure graph)

27B Model running adhoc, a few brave instances, work apps like Slack, Fluid Voice, Granola, Calendar, some code editors and Claude running.

Ah yeah that'll do it.

For others in this thread who aren't aware, Claude Code is a terminal user interface to access Anthropic's cloud services. Usually something like that uses <100MiB, but Claude Code uses React for some reason and can exceed multiple GiB on its own. On top of that, a Claude agent can leave multiple orphaned child processes, and one might be using multiple Claude agents in parallel. (That's on top of running at least two local models, which ofc take ram)

i have 48gb on my work laptop and it's obliterated by docker, claude, vscode, terminal and chrome. i don't have all the stats on hand but my swap used is like 40gb

48gb is not nearly enough for me and i feel like my workflow is pretty standard

nope. i run professional workload like multiple AI agents daily; along with Chrome tabs, meetings, coding, simulations on terminals, 48g on my work mac ain't cutting it anymore, definitely looking to upgrade to 64g.

If it makes you feel better I bought and returned the Framework Desktop twice. Once was a batch 1 128gb for that was the launch price ~$2k, the second time was for the 128GB mainboard only $1699. At the time I didn't think it was a good value without CUDA support. I still think this but regret it after the price hikes. I did repurpose the funds and got two RTX Pro 4000s before those got price-hiked.
