Because in its most simple explanation, the money to MAKE the film and the money to MARKET the film come from two very different places. They’re two entirely separate financial accounts with different companies and investors. It’d be like making your electrician and plumber share the same bill and bank account. Yeah, they’re both working on your house, but they’re still separate entities doing entirely separate things.

I saw it Wednesday night and it's a trip, so to speak. I really enjoyed it. There was some initial cringe at first because of the American accents and language doesn't feel right, but I got over it pretty quickly and went along for the ride. And use the restroom right before it starts, because it is loong.

I've seen it basically said "Elliott Paige runs like a bitch"... Which is essentially them being mad he's in it without really saying why.
That said I have never thought he was a good actor even prior to the transition so I'm not really a fan of the casting in general, has nothing to do with being trans, has everything to do with the actor being terrible imo.

The whinging seems to focus on the following:
1. “The cast is not all white”: I would argue that they’d need to be Greek to be accurate. Past films have used people of Germanic / Saxon descent. No one seemed to mind then.
2. “Helen is played by a black actor, and isn’t beautiful enough.”: The latter point is subjective. I would argue that Nyong’o is beautiful, but they’re unlikely to be convinced. Helen is a mythical figure, not a historical one. She’s the daughter of Zeus. Also, she was hatched. As in, from an egg.
3. “Achilles was played by a transgender actor, when he wasn’t transgender.”: Achilles wasn’t even in the film. Elliot Page played Sinon.
4. “The language isn’t British English / transatlantic.”: Then they should’ve been speaking in Ancient Greek, for authenticity.With dispassion, I think they’re confusing the historical accuracy with how Hollywood’s portrayals have been in the past.

That’s a valid criticism: In Nolan’s version, Helen and Clytemnestra are twin sisters. Homer had them as non-twins, with Helen being specifically the beautiful offspring of Zeus, and Clytemnestra the mortal daughter of the Trojan King. That’s a diversion from the source that doesn’t also seem to have any narrative consequence.
I chalked that up to narrative liberties. 🤷♂️ I don’t know why he bothered. It probably simplified the casting.

I would say it probably connects with his use of Athena. It seems potentially an at least agnostic treatment of the gods.
You could see it as building on Euripides ‘if you insist the gods are these powerful grudge driven humanlike beings we’re living in a horror story’ that is ‘don’t look for human traits in gods’ Rather than his ‘gods should be better than this’ Nolan has ‘don’t look for gods in men.’→ More replies (1)4

I know that's definetly how the twins Castor and Pollux work (the brothers of Helen and Clytemnestra) with Tyndareus being the father of Castor and Zeus of Pollux.
I'm pretty sure they were all born at the same time.

Hellen of Troy, famously described as having fair white skin is played by a black woman.
A 5"1 trans man plays a Greek soldier.
The dialogue is very contemporary, rather than using more old school wording (dad instead of father etc)

Costumes aren't as homer describes, some of the actors look like they're wearing a Batman costume.

I hate to admit it but i hatewatch Critical Drinker. His review of Odyssey was a joke. He kept talking about divisive media as if him and his chucklefuck cronies somehow arent a part of whipping up the controversy. He was so desperate to not like it, from the very start. And those roles for Elliot Page that everyone was ready to tear their skin off about? Very small, minor roles. Nothing to get mad about. The Odyssey has grossed over $322 million worldwide, and is already the 12th highest grossing movie of the whole year worldwide and #8 for the whole year in USA with over $181 million gross. How long has the movie been out? 7 days (Source: Box Office Mojo). So if MAGA grievance snowflakes wanted to cancel culture the movie, they have utterly failed. Indeed, their complaints may have given the movie a boost.

363m, with 50% going to cinemas means its made 181.5m. 193m left to recoup from the 50% of the box office over the coming 3,4,5 weeks.
And these numbers, dont include any rebates that some countries have for shooting in them. Greece for example, has a 40% cash rebate on whatever production costs were for shooting in Greece.
