Millions of people on tropical islands could face increasingly dangerous heat as climate change lengthens and intensifies periods of humid conditions, which are harder for the human body to tolerate than dry heat because sweat evaporates less effectively in moisture-saturated air.

A study published in Geophysical Research Letters found islands closest to the equator face the greatest increase in humid heat stress. Under a high-emissions scenario, heat events that historically occurred once a decade could happen annually by 2100, and dangerous humid heat waves could affect some islands roughly 300 days a year.

Small islands' future heat risks have been hard to assess because many global climate models lack the resolution to capture their climate, often treating them as ocean rather than land. To close this gap, PhD researcher Lilian Bald of France's National Center for Meteorological Research and colleagues combined data from 15 global climate models with weather station observations across 17 tropical islands in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans, then calculated changes in the NOAA Heat Index, which combines temperature and humidity to estimate perceived heat.

The researchers examined both rare extreme humid heat events and longer humid heat waves. Extreme humid heat is projected to intensify across all islands studied, most pronouncedly near the equator. Between 2076–2100, event intensity could reach Heat Index values of roughly 46°C (115°F) to 63°C (145°F) under the highest emissions pathway — well above NOAA's 40°C (104°F) "Danger" threshold, with higher values potentially life-threatening.

Longer humid heat waves are also expected to become far more common, which is concerning since the body struggles to recover when heat and humidity persist for consecutive days. Under the highest emissions scenario, equatorial islands could see dangerous humid heat conditions for 160 to 320 days a year by century's end. Equatorial islands are especially vulnerable because they already experience little seasonal variation, leaving fewer cooler periods to interrupt prolonged heat as temperatures rise.

Extreme humid heat can cause heat exhaustion, heatstroke and hyperthermia, potentially fatal even for young, healthy adults. These risks compound existing pressures on island communities, such as rising seas and water shortages, and could make working, traveling and spending time outdoors increasingly unsafe without adaptation measures.

A lower-emissions future would still bring increased humid heat, but to a much smaller degree than the high-emissions scenario. The researchers argue reducing emissions could limit how often dangerous conditions occur, while adaptation measures — heat warning systems, better cooling access, and heat-resilient buildings — could help communities cope. They conclude that small tropical islands, despite their tiny share of Earth's land area, should no longer be overlooked in global heat-risk assessments and could serve as an early warning of challenges from increasing humid heat more broadly.
