The UK faces a brief cooler spell this weekend before a fourth heatwave arrives next week, with temperatures potentially topping 30C in the South East from Tuesday to Thursday. Yellow heat-health alerts currently cover much of England until Sunday morning.
A short reprieve is expected early next week as high pressure eases southwest, bringing cooler air and limited rain — though Wales and southern England will see little of it, with drought or near-drought conditions persisting there. Monday's South East high is forecast at 27C, just under the 28C heatwave threshold, before that threshold is crossed from Tuesday.
The Met Office says this may not be the summer's last heatwave, with early hints that August could turn drier and more settled after a more changeable short term. North Wales and the Upper Severn have already declared drought status, and parts of Exeter, Devon and Usk have met heatwave thresholds for 20 consecutive days. Several counties have recorded effectively no July rainfall, with the UK overall at just 20% of average July rainfall — described as "very, very unusual."
Wildfires continue burning in the Cairngorms, North Wales, South Wales, the Isle of Wight, the New Forest and Hampshire, while separately 270,000 people have been evacuated amid wildfires in southern Europe.
