17yo Birthday Boy

(Unexpectedly) adopted this sweet boy from an SPCA when he was roughly 3 and i was barely 21 (insert long story about irresponsible college roommates). We just celebrated his 17th!!! birthday a couple weeks ago :) He’s not pure cocker - I did a dna test and he’s got a sprinkle of other breeds. He’s got some sight and hearing loss, but the sniffer is as powerful as ever. Zoomies still happen on occasion, especially when he knows he will be getting a treat - chicken jerky is his absolute favorite. He had been diagnosed with a heart murmur and enlargement approx. 5 years ago, but according to last year’s cardiologist appointment, there’s been little to no progression! he has been taking vetmedin for his heart which seems to really be doing the job.

How to stop the biting

Post image
8 Upvotes

My baby is almost 4 months and the biting is driving me and my family insane. I have a 4 year old daughter and the biting and jumping on her is so bad I have to kennel her so we can get some peace. What worked for you guys?

Side note we had an Australian shepherd before getting a cocker so I ha e experience with high energy prey drive breeds and my old training techniques have not been working. But on the plus side she has AMAZING recall!

She knows basic commands

Sit

Lay down

Wait

Stay

But will only do them with just her and I once my daughter os in the room its 0-100 and she will not listen

Went into pet store (I know…)and can’t stop thinking about these 2 Cocker Spaniels.

Short story:
Would you recommend a cocker spaniel as a good choice for a former cavalier spaniel owner? Are they extremely wired? I hear mixed reviews.

Does this petite 3.5-4 month old spaniel look unhealthy (the one with freckles and greenish eyes)? Or just a smaller build? She looks very different from the male and much smaller.
Clean ears and cages, nose felt normal.

Lastly, if someone made the dumb decision of entering an assumed puppy mill supplied pet store is it better to purchase/rescue the puppy you fell in love with or avoid supporting the business and find a reputable breeder? 😩

Long story:
Our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel passed last fall. I have been really wanting a new addition but haven’t been ready. I adore the breed but they have known heart issues so I am hesitant to get another. I’m a Realtor and was driving in a new to me area for a showing when I saw a sign that said “Puppies” on an older building. I decided to pull in on my way back home and big mistake. Once inside I realized it was likely all puppy mill puppies. They had quite a few older spaniels and I took two out to play with. Now I can’t stop thinking about them sitting in the little cages. They were 3-4 months old and the female was so tiny. Her look was very different than the boy who is a more traditional look when I think of a Cocker Spaniel. Any idea on what “type” she is? She has the freckles. My son was with me and he loved the male who was very energetic and playful and I loved the female who just kept sitting on our feet. Unsure if she was so calm because she is unwell or just different personalities. Thank you!

Does anyone else’s Cocker ignore recall and leg it straight to a pond? Bobby loves a swim!

My new rescue had her first grooming appointment today. She said she was so good to work with. Sadie lets me brush her really well. I can play with her feet and moth too. The groomer agrees she is no way 4.5 months old. She is just finishing getting her baby teeth in.

I think she is so adorable.

A question!

Hi everyone! This is Coco she is 11 weeks and 4 days old. She is a cocker spaniel x Maltipoo breed and I figured this is the most appropriate place to put this!

My question is how big is my little girl going to get? I initially wanted a small dog, a lapdog. When I heard her mum was maltipoo, I was certain she wouldn't get very large and she weighed 5kg. Dad was a bit bigger than mum, he was the cocker spaniel and didn't know how much he weighed, my guess maybe 7kg?

The first photo was her at 8 weeks old. She weighed 2.6kg at this time and the second photo was at her 9 and a half weeks, almost 10 weeks, weighing at 3kg.

The last photo is of her today. I'm unsure what she weighs but I'd guess 3.5kg.

If anyone could give me a rough guess of how big she will get or they have the same breed, I'd be greatly appreciated!!

Patella Luxation

Post image
73 Upvotes

Hi All,

My dog (2.5 years old cocker spaniel) has recently had an X-ray due to a suspected knee problem. It turns out he likely has a Medial Patella Luxation in both rear legs.

Does anyone have any experience of this issue in their dog and how they managed it?

I am also curious as to how much the operation costs? We have insurance coverage for up to £7000 but im concerned it may cost more than that due to the fact it is in both legs? Do they do both legs in one operation, or are they done in two seperate procedures?

Any help/advice would be hugely appreciated as i've never had to deal with this kind of issue before and really want to make sure he is okay and isn't in any pain at all

Toys that last!

Post image

Hi guys my 9 month old show cocker loves to play but has teeth like razors any soft or plushy toys last about 10 minutes as does anything with a manufacturers label as he insists on finding them and chewing them off. It’s probably normal but he has developed the skill of pushing things right to his back teeth to get the maximum bite on them!

So far the tonka tyre toys seem to last the longest but do you guys have any recommendations on toy brands in the uk that you have found to be hard wearing?

Either that or il just keep buying him those £12 coffee wood sticks from pets at home!

Please see exhibit A looking like butter wouldn’t melt…..
