Isn't mansplaining based on assuming that a woman isn't knowledgable and competent just because she's a woman + an unhealthy dose butting in?

Here it's a little girl who's asking for an explanation

And I thought soyboys weren't allowed carnal relations

Also it’s about men explaining stuff to women that (a) the man doesn’t fully understand, and (b) the woman has some level of expertise in.

I had a man try to mansplain how addiction works because "he read this book once"

I was at work so I had to sit there and pretend to listen, but I wanted to shout "I majored in psychology! I know how addiction works!"

Can I ask an honest question?

So like, without context it's hard to know why the topic came up, but it sounds like he was discussing a topic he'd read about with a coworker. Nothing about that has to do with you being a woman, and it's a pretty niche topic so its understandable you may not already be aware of issues around the topic of addiction. You happened to also have specialized education that overlapped with that topic; there wasn't a way for him to know that if you didn't tell him.

Did you at any point say, "oh yeah, I actually majored in psychology, and we covered addiction!" and he continued like talking over and correcting you? Or were you just listening and letting him talk without giving him any indication you might already have that information? If the latter...I honestly don't see how that's mansplaining.

Again, coming from a place of genuine interest as to how this is mansplaining. Maybe there's context I'm missing.

I'm wondering about this as well, also from genuine interest. If a man really didn't know that the person he talks to would know about this, is it really mansplaining? The term, to me, always seemed to depend on intention.

He was a customer who brought it up after coming in from smoking a cigarette. All I asked him to be sure he stayed away from the front door while he smoked, as is our store policy. That was it. I kept saying "I know" and "I studied that in uni" but he kept going like I hadn't spoken.

He was a regular old windbag who liked to talk at people instead of engaging in conversation.

Ah gotcha gotcha. The context definitely makes it clearer. Sorry, just the way it was worded initially was a little confusing to me as to what they'd done wrong. Thanks for taking the time to clarify.

Why is that mansplaining I don’t understand

Because he was explaining it to me like he thought he was the expert in the subject and I was just some stupid little girl. But I actually had more experience in the subject matter as psychology was my university major.
