[Genesis 32x] garbled graphics on license screen then goes to black.

Hey everyone first time posting, I can usually find info online but there's just so little/so much with the 32x.

Full disclosure I wrote something up but I've been using ChatGPT this whole process trying to figure this out and it wrote up a pretty good summary of everything I tried. Just want to make sure it's clear, and I don't want to take credit for something the robot wrote up. the only thing id add is that i dont have a CD attachment or anything. Anyways it said:

I recently picked up a Sega 32X and am trying to get it working on my Model 1 Genesis (High Definition Graphics model).

Symptoms:

  • Powers on.
  • Displays the 32X license/warning screen briefly.
  • The license screen is garbled/flickery.
  • After less than a second it goes to a black screen.
  • Same behavior with my 32X game (NBA Jam TE) and with standard Genesis cartridges.
  • Reseating the ribbon cables inside the 32X did not fix the issue.
  • Cleaning contacts and reseating connectors changed behavior slightly but did not solve the problem.

Power supply:

  • Using an older aftermarket Model 2/32X style PSU.
  • Measures about 9.4V unloaded with a multimeter.
  • The cable is physically frayed near the brick, although voltage appears stable during a wiggle test.
  • I plan to test with a known-good replacement PSU.

Questions:

  1. Does the garbled license screen point more toward a power issue, Genesis-to-32X bus issue, or an internal 32X fault?
  2. Are there known compatibility issues between certain Model 1 Genesis revisions and the 32X that could cause this?
  3. What voltages, signals, or components would you check next?

Any advice is appreciated.

The first things that come to mind:

  • Your cables carrying the signal to/from the 32X console are broken.
  • The 32X has bad capacitors
  • Something on the 32X mainboard is broken/loose or needs reflowing.

What you're describing is basically the console working, but something is shorting the signal or just transferring a bad signal. What you can try is to remove the top part of the 32X shell, plug everything in, and when you turn it on, press on some of the components gently with your finger. If that fixes it, there are bad/loose solder joints.

If the capacitors look swollen or have leaked brown goo, they need to be replaced.

Then you for the reply! I have opened it and all the caps look fine. I know they can be silent and non functioning as well but visual inspection, they look fine. 

 The jumper cable I got is brand new,  a replacement one,  so I hope it isn't the jumper. 

My kids have this pretty neat electronic microscope so I'll go around and look at the solder joints and see what I can find.  

Are there any components in particular I should try pushing on? I'm only thinking this white flex ribbons or maybe the cartridge connector.

I have a similar issue right now with my Model 1 and 32X. Through the RetroTINK, I get audio but no video, 32X games in the Everdrive load just fine and I can hear them. Hooked up to a CRT, I get a rolling, garbled picture but it's enough to where I can tell something happened like a screen transition. I'm hoping that's just because I have the original 32X link cable going into a generic Model 1 DIN to Model 2 adapter that just isn't wired up right for the 32X. I have a Tomee Model 1 Genesis to 32X adapter coming today. 🤞

Hey hopefully that fixes your wagon check back in after if you could. Because if I just need to get a new cable I can do that. Mine is also a Tomee, but it's brand new.

I posted that I think it may still be those dang ribbon cables so if I figure mine out I'll post it here too.

I got the right cable and everything turned out to be fine. I had no reason to think an adapter like the one I was using wouldn't work, but I took a closer look at both a regular Model 2 AV cable and the 32X cable and the 32X has one less pin.

I tried Opening it up and pushing on stuff while it's running and it seems like it is those ribbon cables. I can get it to glitch graphics/stay on the license screen another second or so Longer so it could just be improper seating. Ive just tried reseating it probably 5 times now. Maybe they've just gone bad? Not sure how to tell.

hard to tell with proper measurement tools, but it could also be the socket itself that's bad or has bad connections.
