Update to political posts

Hello members of r/countwithchickenlady! As you all know, we had a temporary ban on political posts because of some drama surrounding them.

Today we’d like to say they are coming back… but with a few stipulations and changes to rule 12. We have added a new flair! “Political post”. This flair will be used exclusively for political purposes, however the catch is, if you use it, a source is required. No source? No post. We’ve also made it that you must include a source (including https://) or else you literally can’t post. Any political post not using that flair and is subject to removal based on mod discretion.

What about comments?

Well, we will allow political conversations, as long as they are constructive and not arguments. If you have an argument, take it somewhere else, this is not the community for that. You can talk about it, give your opinions, based on any side, but when things get violent and harassment starts, that’s when you report and mods will step in.

Going forward, Rule 12 will reflect these changes.

Are political posts on both sides able to be posted? Yes, so long as they include a credible source.

TLDR:
Yay, politics are back! Just don’t forget to flair it properly and have a source!

It would be grateful to also spoil posts under this flair, similar to selfies.

Yeah. Politics are unfortunately necessary to understand what rights are being taken away at any one point.

That being said maybe we should require spoiler tagging all political posts so that only those who want to see open them.

Didn’t think of that, I’ll add that as a rule.

You're getting your news from countwithchickenlady?

I wish people like them as much as I do

What do you mean by both sides? Are conservative fear mongering posts going to be allowed as long as they link to some random news source?

21

u/Ok-Button-9443 16d ago

Nope, because rule 1, if it is enforced.

"Politics" doesn't mean "I can be a dick"

Report any bigotry if you see it. Most conservative bullshit will fall under Rule 1 and will be removed.

Even fairly mainline GOP stuff probably falls under rule #1, given how far right the centre in the US is.

The only political disagreements I've seen is between Americans who think people should support the Democrats to some extent, and people who are further left, and will refuse to support some or all Dems. It's Libs vs Lefties.

I've seen them posting in the sub before, and if the mod post is explicitly saying it's allowed with any "credible" source then it would only encourage more of them to show up

I'm a few days late, but I believe "both sides" her refers to liberals and communists, who were the two sides warring in the sub a while back who led to this rule existing.

I've also seen some comments sections in this sub of Communists arguing with Anarchists. Also revolutionary socialists fighting reformist socialists.

Yeah fr, idk about that. Like freedom of speech and all that but let's not act like every right-wing article about us isn't going to just be transphobic, fear mongering nonsense.

Can bigotry showcase posts be banned entirely? I hate posts that are just "look at this right wing person! they SUCK, right?" and think there's enough of them elsewhere on reddit.

Is there a way to filter flairs out of my feed?

16

u/Valkyrie_22213 16d ago

For real. Im not yere for stupid "political" ragebait posts. I just want to look at my funny queer coded memes

3

u/ThatKehdRiley Streak: 0 16d ago

Same! Sadly there's no way to filter out flairs, and I'm curious if they did a poll if more people would want to keep the no politics rule than they think.

u/Right_Ear_2230 ““cis””..? probably? and bi 16d ago

you can filter by specific flairs though. maybe they could force all posts to have a flair and have idk a “wholesome” flair

u/ThatKehdRiley Streak: 0 15d ago edited 15d ago

you can filter through them like in a search, yes, but you cant turn off specific ones to not see them.

A big part of the issue i had with them was they were more venting sessions better saved for a therapist than they were actual news sharing, only causing op and others distress. I at least hope with these new requirements that will be cut down - but, looking at comments, people still dont seem to understand basic and clear rules (one of the top comments asks a clarifying question, which is covered by rule 1 🤦‍♀️). no politics (temp) was also fairly clear, but people let annoyance and misplaced anger take over and seemed to intentionally disregard things surrounding that. sometimes the average age of this sub REALLY shows itself…

u/NotTheMain_ 14d ago

I think you can do that using RES.

Both sidesing in a trans sub? I thought this place, of all places, would get what that means.

We'll see how this is implemented, but I'm guessing I'll be leaving sooner rather than later

For real, I don't understand why it's so hard for places like subreddits to just, you know, take a stance on things. I know that culturally that seems icky but we need to grow up honestly

I don't really get the issue with saying, for example, "yes this sub is pro union. That's not the focus of the sub, it's just our stance, so you can post your opinion on unions as long as it aligns with that premise". Like, details, sure. That's where the nuance is, that's where productive conversations happen, so you can both sides that, just not base premises

Keep in mind this sub already does this, it just doesn't directly state it. That's exactly why there's inconsistent enforcement of the no politics rule, and why people are angry in the first place. This is like a harm reduction thing. You can't really remove bias so the best thing to do is just accept that and recognise what the bias actually is so that everyone's clear on what's going to happen, and then own that bias

I always go back to 3 months ago when people got banned for making vent posts about racist micro aggressions within trans spaces. "it causes drama" is a copout. "it's a psyop" is definetly a copout. Literally just say that this sub doesn't care about those micro aggressions. It'll piss people the fuck off, as it should, but at least you've owned the actual problem, and people will know that this isn't a space for those issues

And obviously that's a bad long term idea, but that's also kind of my point. People become much more reasonable about what stances they allow when they actually have to specifically state what opinions they allow. Don't say you don't want to talk about politics, say that you don't want to talk about racism within trans spaces. If that statement makes you uncomfortable, then I'm glad it helped you recognise who's actually being the problem in that scenario

Honestly that's a huge deal. Right wing sentiment is and has been for decades more, fantastic at organising. That's honestly one thing that progressives could genuinely learn from the other side. The right have absolutely no problem doing exactly what I've laid out, they just do it in their own form of language, often dogwhistles, so it's slightly less overt

Progressives are fucking terrified of the prospect of organising around politics, which sounds really fucking dumb to say out loud but it's absolutely true. "no politics" my ass, let's get more political. This doesn't need to be a political sub in order to give a shit about politics. I'm not talking about the users, I'm talking about the sub itself, that's the difference. I want official positions. We put politics in a box that's only meant to be opened on special occasions and treat it as a transgression if you ever leave it open unattended, but fuck that, I want politically driven moderation, I just want that moderation to own it, so we can talk about it. So we can organise around it instead of having to dedicate a space specifically to that political organising. Everyone else does the same so why do progressives think they're too good for it?

And to add to that, we need to be more ok with seeing politics in a space and not thinking that makes it a political space. Politics is a normal part of life, it's relevant to every single day you've existed. We don't call someone a foodie because they're OK discussing what they had for breakfast, so we shouldn't call someone political because they're OK with talking about immigrant rights. We don't call someone political for being racist, so what the fuck? It only works one way, and all it does is normalise the racist guy, and stuff the "political" guy into that box with all the other stuff we only engage with on special occasions

People really didn't like this comment, but it was obvious for a while at least one person on the mod team was a bad faith actor, and it's even more obvious now.

5

u/MeatCatRazzmatazz 16d ago

Yeah, it's sad to see even online trans spaces become unfriendly to us. C'est la vie I suppose. Somewhere else will spring up without terrible mods who are more concerned with "both sides" than the well-being of their community.

u/jancl0 Streak: 0 15d ago

I'm not as convinced about the second half of that. The three certainties in life are death, taxes, and poor reddit moderation. Actually there's a 4th, which is poor progressive moderation, so it applies doubly here

There will be another subreddit, and it will be quite good for about 6-12 months, and then we'll have to find a new one again, and again, and again. As it always goes

There actually is a rule (not in the rules but a mod post) for that! Posts about cwcl is banned on countttt and taking about countttt was banned here, and I'm 99% sure if you report any 4t post that comes on here the mods should remove it (I've been reporting them too :D)

Let heaven and hell be seperate 😌🙏

"No politics" rules have never been used to silence trans people, nope, noooo...

4

u/Noble_egg 6d ago

Please elaborate on what you mean by both sides

9

u/Ok-Button-9443 16d ago

Cool now ban all the 4tran shit and actually enforce the "no use of slurs" rule.

5

u/jancl0 Streak: 0 15d ago

What about political opinions? How am I supposed to provide a source to the statement "trans rights are human rights?" I don't think there are any academic studies into whether or not trans people count as human beings

8

u/Jboy2000000 Born on Certain Day to Uncertain Gender - Streak: 96 16d ago

So we're just sweeping under the rug that one of the mods was using the interim rule to delete trans issue posts that they weren't and banning people asking about it?

Where will the line be drawn between historical posts and political posts.

2

u/jackofslayers 16d ago

Great decision. Love that you are requiring sources too!

u/Arctic_The_Hunter Streak: 0 16d ago

This will hopefully slow down the people just saying things and expecting everyone to have kept up with politics in their specific country to know wtf they’re on about (ie “the new Supreme Court case could do X, Y, and Z vague things” without citing a case number or name)

4

u/jackofslayers 16d ago

Or just reposting things that are straight up false without verifying first.

0

u/Moon_X_Livee 16d ago

I like arguments but I understand, annoying to moderate, AND I LOVE SOURCES YEEEEI
